DODGE CITY, Kan. — The No. 4 Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons used the legs of Dezmon Jackson and the defense of Monty Montgomery to make quick work of the Dodge City Conquistadors Saturday afternoon.

Jackson and Montgomery entered the day as reigning players of the week offensively and defensively, respectively.

Both made the case to be player of the week again.

Jackson opened the Blue Dragon scoring with an 81-yard scamper less than four minutes into the contest.

Jackson found the end zone for the sixth straight game.

But the Jayhawk’s back-to-back offensive player of the week wasn’t done.

On a fourth-and-one late in the second quarter, Jackson broke free for a 24-yard romp.

Jackson finished the day with 157 yards on 17 touches. Saturday proved to be Jackson’s third multi-touchdown game; his fourth straight with 130-plus rushing yards; and fourth straight with a 44-plus yard rush.

The Dragons are now 5-0 when Jackson carries the ball for 132-plus yards.

In between Jackson’s TD runs, Monty Montgomery provided an exhilarating strip-six.

On what appeared to be a routine run from Dodge City’s Anthony Watkins, Montgomery came away with the ball and took it to the house.

The ball never hit the ground. Montgomery slowed Watkins with the initial contact, then snatched the ball from the running back and waltzed 20 yards into the end zone.

Montgomery now has back-to-back games with a defensive touchdown.

Much like Jackson: Montgomery wasn’t done.

With nearly five minutes gone in the third and the Dragons leading 28-0, Montgomery picked off Drew Harris and completed a 28-yard pick-six.

Just before Montgomery’s second stellar defensive play, Mason Schucker found Jaylen Erwin on a 23-yard pass.

It was one of the few bright spots for Schucker, who had not thrown a TD since Sept. 29 at Butler.

Schucker finished the day 9 of 23 for 111 yards. He had the one touchdown to Erwin and threw two interceptions.

Dodge City’s quarterback Drew Harris had a rough day, too.

The Dragons intercepted Harris three times. He completed only 7 of his 27 attempts for 138 yards.

The Dragons held the Conquistadors to just 2 of 15 on third down.

If not for a long run by Watkins late in the third, the Dragons would have kept the Conquistador run game to 52 yards.

However, after being held in check through nearly three quarters, Watkins broke free for Dodge City’s only touchdown of the game. It was, perhaps, the only mental lapse by the Dragon defense.

Four Dragon defenders swarmed to Watkins at the line of scrimmage, he appeared to be stopped. Just when the play seemed over, Watkins broke free for a 61-yard TD run.

Sebastian Garcia added a 40-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to give Hutchinson a 38-7 advantage.

The Dragons started cycling in reserves.

Nolan Arrington, Arian Strong and Khalil McClain all got a chance to take snaps from center.

McClain entered the day as Hutchinson’s leading receiver. He caught three balls Saturday for 68 yards. He’s also dazzled with other facets of his game. It’s hard to find a category on the stat sheet where the former high school quarterback doesn’t appear. He has a passing touchdown, a tackle, a kick return and rushing attempts to his credit this season.

The last category is the only place he has struggled this year. McClain entered the game with negative-4 yards rushing.

McClain changed that against the Conquistadors.

He helped the Dragons run out the clock with 33 yards on the ground and a first down.

Before McClain was called upon to run out the clock, Drake Bolus showed his speed with a 55-yard run to the Dodge City 4. He promptly capped off that 10-play, 79-yard drive with a 4-yard TD burst.

No. 4 Hutchinson Community College (8-1, 6-0) will play No. 2 Garden City (7-0, 4-0) on Nov. 3. Kickoff is set for noon at Gowans Stadium.

The Broncbusters defeated the Highland Scotties Saturday 51-31.
