Rick Mayfield, 69, died March 2, 2018, at Hospice House. He was born Oct. 26, 1948, to Martin and Erma (Mears) Mayfield.  Celebration of Life will be 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. June 23, 2018, at Hutchinson Arts Center, 405 N. Ruth Marjorie (Prentice) Schroll, age 94, entered eternal life on March 2, 2018, at the Brookdale Assisted Living Community in Hutchinson, KS. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Mabel (Morstad) Prentice and brother, Gerald Prentice.

Ruth was born on April 20, 1923, in Lisbon, ND. She spent most of her adolescence in Minneapolis, MN, but graduated from Hyattsville High School in Hyattsville, MD.  In 1942, she enrolled at Maryland University and pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.  Her father worked for the Farm Credit Administration in Washington, D.C.  Because of wartime, the government moved her family to Kansas City.  Ruth then transferred to the University of Kansas, where she met her cherished husband, Jack.  At KU Ruth majored in Home Economics and minored in Education and Voice.

Ruth married Jack Schroll on November 21, 1945, at the Westport Presbyterian Church in Kansas City. Their marriage has been a 72-year love story.  Ruth and Jack graduated from KU in 1945.  They had multiple moves early in their marriage due to Jack finishing his medical training as an Ob-Gyn physician, and his military service in the Navy.  Ultimately, they returned to Jack’s hometown, Hutchinson.  Ruth and Jack are members of the Trinity United Methodist Church.  Most recently, they spent eight years living in Olathe, KS, and were associate members of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, KS.

During the years when Ruth was devoted to raising her four children, she served as President of the Hutchinson Music Club and organized a Brownie Scout troop. She was elected to the Board of Directors of Methodist Youthville in Newton, KS, and enjoyed being a member of the BL Chapter of P.E.O.

Ruth was an active member of Trinity Methodist Church and the DUO Sunday School Class. She taught 8^th grade Sunday school and was a member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service.  At times she served on both the Music and Building Committees of Trinity, was a choir member and soloist with a lovely soprano voice, and director of the children’s choir.

Music was always a big part of Ruth’s life. At a young age, she would sing solos for church services, weddings, clubs and civic events.  She had extensive voice training and was a finalist in a large voice competition in Washington, D.C.  before graduating from high school.  She encouraged her children and grandchildren to enjoy music and play the piano.  Some of her happiest memories involved the family singing around the piano.

Ruth especially loved her family, eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, many friends, faithful dogs, flowers and gardens. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends in her home, traveling, and playing golf and tennis.  Her claim to fame was her sneaky little drop shot.  Reluctantly she gave up tennis in her early 80’s after surprising both children and grandchildren by being able to beat them at times.  She had fun on the jet ski’s during family lake vacations.  Ruth enjoyed sewing and was proud of quilts that she made for each grandchild.  Her grandchildren fondly remember swimming with Ruth in her backyard pool, cooking with her, and playing many hours of games.

Ruth leaves a legacy of love and faithfulness by modeling what it is to be a strong Christian woman, a wife, a mother, and a grandmother. She led by example.

Survivors include the following: three daughters, Nancy Buda (Sandy) of Omaha, NE; Dr. Kathryn Graves (Jeff) of Hutchinson, KS; Barbara Saathoff (Ken) of Overland Park, KS; and one son, Dr. John Schroll (Valjean Parker) of Olathe, KS; eight grandchildren, Matthew Schroll (Amy) of Chicago, IL; Jeffery Graves (Anne) of Mission Hills, KS; Adam Buda (Bridget) of Omaha, NE; Jonathon Graves (Rikki) of Park City, KS; Katy (Graves) Walenz (Anthony) of Moore, OK; Ali Buda of Omaha, NE; Dan Saathoff (Kayli) of Prairie Village, KS; Abbey (Saathoff) Chingren (Chris) of Kansas City, MO; five great grandchildren, twins, Lily and Emma Graves of Mission Hills, KS; Ruth Anne and A. J. Walenz of Moore, OK; and Jaxson Graves of Park City, KS; two step-great grandchildren, Donovan Buda and Jacob Buda of Omaha, NE; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Celebration of Life service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2018, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1602 N. Main, Hutchinson. Private family burial will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.  Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday and Friday, with the family present Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson.  The family will greet guests immediately following the Celebration of Life service in the church parlor.

Robert Eugene ‘Bob’ Smith, 61, died Thursday, March 1, 2018, at Schowalter Villa, Hesston, Kansas. He was born September 19, 1956, in Coffeyville, the son of Edmund Carl and Esther Ivanette (Kallenburger) Smith. He was a 1974 graduate of Newton High School, and had been a truck driver for over 30 years. Bob enjoyed spending his free time fishing, bowling or golfing.

He is survived by: his daughters, Christi Winchester and husband Jamie of Hutchinson, Jeanie Fulmer and husband Drew, and Traci Thiesen, all of Hesston; grandchildren, Jake and Luke Winchester of Hutchinson, Noah and Lily Fulmer, Tenley and Brynn Thiesen, all of Hesston; brother-in-law, Steve Behrendt of Hutchinson; nieces, Emily Sharma and husband Raj, and son, Ajay of Wichita, and Amelia Stunkel and husband Jeremy, and daughter, Elizabeth of Houston, TX.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; sister, Carla Behrendt; and son-in-law, Josh Thiesen.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2018, at Crossroads Christian Church, 4310 N. Monroe, Hutchinson. Elliott Mortuary and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Donna F. Humiston, 78, of Hutchinson, died Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born March 9, 1939, in Hutchinson, to Jesse Lee and Ethel Welthy (Hauser) Goheen Sr.

Donna graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1957. She worked at Data Center, in accounts payable, retiring in 2006. Donna loved working with her flowers and was famous for her peanut brittle.

On May 25, 1957, she married Richard ‘Dick’ Humiston in Hutchinson. They shared almost 61 years of marriage.
Donna is survived by: husband, Richard; son, Jeff and wife Karen, all of Hutchinson, Tim and wife Darlene of Kansas City, Missouri; brother, Ralph Goheen and wife Dixie of Hutchinson; sister-in-law, Esther Goheen of Inman; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by: her parents and brothers, Laymond Goheen, Jesse Lee Goheen Jr., Virgil Goheen, and Wilbur Goheen.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m., Saturday, March 3, 2018, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5905 W. 4th Ave, Hutchinson, with Pastor Matt Stafford officiating. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2018, at Elliott Mortuary, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m.

Clark W. Miller, 65, of Hutchinson, died Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born March 22, 1952, in Hutchinson, to Harold L. and Helen Jeanine (Clary) Miller.

Clark graduated from Nickerson High School in 1970 and attended Hutchinson Community College, Wichita State University, and St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City. He was a small business owner before working for a number of businesses, including Cessna, Kansas Glass and KWBW. He was the Reno County Treasurer for 20 years. Clark was a member of Park Place Christian Church, where he volunteered and served as an elder and deacon. He had been a member of the Kiwanis Club, Hutchinson Jaycees, Central Kansas Corvette Club, and the Harley Owners Group. Clark was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle.

On May 26, 1979, he married Robyn Gore in Hutchinson. They shared 38 years of marriage. Clark is survived by: wife, Robyn; daughter, Kelly Alexander (Nathan), of Hutchinson; son, Nicholas Miller (Rachel Rasmussen) of Parker, Colorado; grandchildren, Nichole, Austin, and Ethan Alexander, all of Hutchinson; siblings, Marc Miller, Susan Pitzer, Brad Miller, Lynda Miller; and father-in-law, Robert Gore.  He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Scott Miller; mother-in-law, Betty Gore; and brother-in-law, Danny Gore.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2018, at Park Place Christian Church, 2600 N. Adams, with Pastor David Dubovich officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may call Friday from 1 to 8 p.m. with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

Robert ‘Dean’ Wiedeman, 83, of Hutchinson, died Feb. 26, 2018, at Diversicare of Hutchinson. He was born Sept. 11, 1934, in Russell County, Kansas, the son of Alex and Rachel (Nuss) Wiedeman.

Dean graduated from Russell High School in 1954. He worked for Safeway stores for many years before retiring from USD 308, where he worked as a custodian. Dean was a member of Westside Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time painting and woodcarving at the Delos V. Smith Senior Citizens Center.

On June 12, 1955, Dean married Barbara J. Andrews in Hoisington. She survives. Also surviving are: sons, Kenny of Hutchinson, and Michael and fiancé Linda Manning of Denver, CO; and sister-in-law, Norma Wiedeman of Hutchinson. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Marvin.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday, March 5, 2018, at Elliott Chapel with Pastor Tim Adrian officiating. Inurnment will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.
