George L. Boggs, 94, of Hutchinson, died February 24, 2018, at Brookdale of Hutchinson. He was born November 26, 1923, in Augusta, to Jesse W. and Dora R. (Catron) Boggs.

George proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946. He was a crew supervisor with Kansas Power and Light of Lyons, for over 40 years before his retirement. George was a member of the NRA, Kansas Rifle Association, and was a volunteer firefighter for the Lyons Fire Department.

On June 16, 1947, he married Virginia Mae Secrest.

Survivors include: daughter, Sandra Griffin, Hutchinson; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; wife; sons, Ralph and Stephen Boggs; and a daughter, Deborah Gobble.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday, March 2, 2018, at Elliott Chapel with the Reverend Dr. Kim Biery officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Elliott Mortuary. Marion Catherine Knoble, 94, of South Hutchinson, passed away Feb. 24, 2018, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson. She was born Sept. 25, 1923, in Casa, Arkansas, the daughter of Lester and Velma (Ragsdale) Martindale.

Marion served two years in the United States Navy decoding messages during World War II. She held several jobs through the years and enjoyed every one of them, her favorite being the time she served as Reno County Bailiff.

Marion was a member of Bethany Church of the Nazarene, serving as assistant treasurer with Roberta Knight, and providing weekly readings for her Sunday School class and morning worship. She was also a member of Hutchinson American Legion Lysle Rishel Post 68.

Marion met her husband, Paul, on a July evening near the end of World War II. Marine Paul Knoble had a pass to go to Washington, DC, and while enjoying the evening he was introduced to Navy WAVE Marion Martindale. It was love at first sight! One month later, on August 18, 1945, Paul and Marion vowed to love and care for each other for life. They shared nearly 72 and ½ years of marriage.

Marion is survived by: her husband, Paul, of the home; son, Gary and wife Connie of Lincoln, NE; one granddaughter; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sister, Betty Randall of Columbus, OH; and brother, Robert Martindale and wife Linda of Sioux City, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, James Martindale.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 2018, at Mennonite Friendship Communities Chapel, 600 W. Blanchard, South Hutchinson, with Chaplain Randall Turner officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily until the day of the service.

Franklin Douglas Sherwood, of Hutchinson, better known as ‘Doug’ to his family and friends, passed from this life at age 55, on February 24, 2018, after a brief, hard battle with cancer. He was born October 21, 1962, in Olathe, Kansas, to John and Doris Sherwood.

He was a retired truck driver.

Franklin leaves behind: a son, Douglas Sherwood; and three sisters, Pam Tuxhorn (Ed), Kathy Baker (Mike), Connie Romesburg (Fred). He was an uncle to: John Clune of Lawrence, Frank Clune (Lyndsey), Justin Romesburg (Tina); and several great-nieces and nephews, all of Hutchinson.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Per Doug’s request there will be no service, as cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be made to Hutchinson Animal Shelter, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS, 67501.

Donald Eugene Schmucker, 88, died Friday, February 23, 2018, at Village of St. Peters, St. Peters, Missouri. He was born July 9, 1929, in Abbyville, to Jess Paul and Blanche (Walker) Schmucker.

Donald graduated from Abbyville High School in 1947, Moody Bible Institute in 1956, and Westmont College in California in 1958. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in O’Fallon, Missouri. Donald was an evangelist, who was passionate about sharing the gospel with anyone he met. He had been a Youth for Christ Director in Kansas and Nebraska, and volunteered countless hours for the Billy Graham Call Center.

On September 9, 2006, he married Grace (Wood) Rowley in Forest Park, Missouri. She died January 1, 2014. Donald is survived by: sister-in-law, Charlotte Schmucker; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; and stepchildren and step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: his parents; sister, Beulah Kueck; and brothers, Harvey and Larry Schmucker.

Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2018, at Sterling Evangelical Bible Church, 3017 N. Sterling Road, Sterling. Private burial will take place in the church cemetery. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

Margery Ann Eveland, 91, of Hutchinson, died February 21, 2018, at Good Samaritan Society, Hutchinson Village. She was born May 31, 1926, in Oshkosh, NE, the daughter of Clement and Corrine (Mick) McCullough. Margery and her parents moved to Atkinson, NE, where she attended school through the 10th grade.

At this time, Margery’s parents moved to Wayne, NE, where she graduated from high school. She then attended Wayne State College, Wayne, NE. Later, she went to work at a bank in Wayne.

Margery had known her future husband, Art, in high school, so they started writing to each other. At this time, Art was on a ship, which was on its way with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Marine Divisions to take the island of Iwo Jima from Japan. He was lucky to get off that island alive. The United States lost 6,000 young men’s lives on Iwo Jima.

When the war was over, Art was discharged and the first thing he did was hitchhike a ride to Wayne, NE, to see Margery. When Art walked into the bank in his Marine uniform, all work stopped. The bank president decided to let Margery off early that day.

Margery and Art had only one date before they were married February 17, 1946, in Wayne, NE, but their marriage still lasted 71 years. During this time, they bought a photographic studio in Hutchinson and named it Art Eveland Photography. They both ran the business until they retired in 1986. Together, Margery and Art photographed thousands of people and weddings from all over the state.

The Evelands both loved to travel and had been in every state except North Dakota and most of the smaller states on the east coast. They spent some time in Nova Scotia, visited the Hawaiian Islands three times, and made three visits to Mexico.

Margery was preceded in death by her husband, Art, and sister, Betty Lou.

Cremation has taken place, and per Margery’s wishes, there will be no service. Violet Mae Barnes, 95, of Hutchinson, went to be with the Lord February 20, 2018, at Good Samaritan Society, Hutchinson Village. She was born April 24, 1922, in Hutchinson, the daughter of William P. and Lestie M. (Schiffert) Reed. Violet was a homemaker. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God of Hutchinson.

On April 18, 1939, Violet married E.D. Barnes in Hutchinson. He died May 29, 2001.

She is survived by: daughter, Beverly Priddy and husband Jackson of Hutchinson; son, Daniel Barnes and wife Wanda of Republic, MO; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Violet was preceded in death by: her parents; sons, Mickey and Tim Barnes; three sisters; and two brothers.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no services. Private family inurnment will take place in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. Memorials may be made to Good Samaritan Society or Full Gospel Fellowship of Hutchinson, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Karen Sue Unruh, 79, of Hutchinson, died Tuesday, February 20, 2018. She was born June 8, 1938, in Dodge City, the daughter of Andrew Hubert and Nellie Fae (Redfield) Elland.

She was a 1956 graduate of Garden City High School, a 1960 graduate of Emporia State University and was a member of Grace Bible Church, Hutchinson. Karen was a music teacher for 3 years and a homemaker.

Karen was a member of the Hutchinson Sweet Adelines for 54 years and had been a YMCA water aerobics instructor and leader for over 30 years.
On August 7, 1960, she married Donald Lee Unruh in Garden City. He survives. Also surviving are: their sons, Michael, Gary and wife Stacie, all of Overland Park, and Greg of Kansas City; brother, James Elland and wife Beth of Denver, Colorado; nine grandchildren; five nieces and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
