Wayne Stewart | 1936 – 2017 |

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Wayne Stewart, 80, of Hutchinson, died August 21, 2017, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born September 1, 1936, in Lincoln, the son of Glen and Irene (Nible) Stewart.

Wayne retired from Borton Inc., where he worked for 60 years. He had many jobs at Borton: laborer, carpenter, superintendent, estimator, and CEO. Wayne was passionate about his work and he loved the people that worked with him. He never turned a person away that was in need. Wayne was a loving husband, father, grandpa, brother, and uncle. He will be greatly missed by many. Wayne was a very unique person, gifted with wisdom, courage, faith, and love. He carried out God’s plan until the end with love, hope, and faith. Many rewards await him in the loving arms of Jesus.

On June 30, 1956, he married Geraldine Joyce ‘Jo’ Bewley in Atchinson. They shared 61 years of marriage.  Wayne is survived by: wife, Jo of the home; sons, Charles and wife Mary of Abilene, TX, Chris and wife Stacy of Kansas City, and Pat of Hutchinson; daughter, Della Buchanan and husband Gene of Hutchinson; brothers, Don of Houston, TX, Thayne and wife Edith of Norfolk, NE; sisters-in-law, Sheila of Smith Center, Ellen of McCool Junction, NE; 18 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers, Harlan, Harold, Dale; sister-in-law, Rita; son, Ronald; daughters-in-law, Maggie and Debbie; grandson, Tony Stewart; and great-granddaughter, Anastasia Liles.

Parish rosary will be 10 a.m. Saturday, August 26, 2017, with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 a.m. at Church of the Holy Cross, 26th and Plum, Hutchinson, with Father Aaron Spexarth officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in South Round Springs Cemetery, Hunter, with Father Daryl Olmstead officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Cross Church (toward education) or Trinity High School, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Duffy gets first win of August

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Danny Duffy and four relievers combined on a two-hitter, helping the Kansas City Royals hold off the Colorado Rockies 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Duffy took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and retired the first two batters before walking DJ LeMahieu and allowing a homer to Nolan Arenado. The Rockies star third baseman squared up a 1-1 pitch and hit it out for his 28th home run.

Duffy (8-8), who was 0-2 with a 6.35 ERA in his first three starts in August, was removed after six innings and 88 pitches. He walked three and struck out seven. Duffy walked Arenado in the first and Trevor Story in the fifth for the only other baserunners he permitted.

Scott Alexander got his first career save with two pitches.

Jon Gray (5-3) gave up three runs, two earned, and six hits over 6 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking one. He dropped to 4-12 in 27 career road starts.

Martha A. “Marty” Cochran

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Martha Angela ‘Marty’ Cochran, 63, of Hutchinson, died Saturday, August 19, 2017. She was born July 5, 1954, in Kirksville, Missouri, the daughter of Wayne Stanley and Shirley Ann (Watson) Parker.

She was a 1972 graduate of Scotland County R-1 School, a member of First United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, and was owner of a title insurance company here in Hutchinson.
On December 21, 1972, she married Jimmy Dean Cochran in Memphis, Missouri. He survives. Also surviving, are their sons, Ryan and wife Carrie of Hutchinson, Zac and wife Kate of Wichita; two grandsons, Fisher Austin and Bane Parker; sisters, Kathryn Eggers of Overland Park, Rebecca Parker Childress of Edina, Missouri, Tamara Parker Nance of Tampa, Florida, Teresa Parker McDonald of Venice, Florida and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marty was preceded in death by her parents and parents-in-law, John and Edna Cochran.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, August 24, 2017, at Elliott Chapel, with Reverend Jeff Slater presiding. Friends may sign her memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through service time Thursday, with family present from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Reno County, in care of Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Greg Berglund | 1947 – 2017 |

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Greg Berglund, 69, died August 17, 2017, at his home in Hutchinson. He was born August 20, 1947, in Topeka, the son of John and Carol (Sanneman) Berglund. Greg graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1965, Hutchinson Community College and Wichita State University. Greg was a retired computer programmer. He was involved in AmVets, Boy Scouts of America, past president of Kiwanis Club in 1993, and proud member of NSRA. Greg had a passion for music, especially, blues and jazz and was also an avid car enthusiast. He had a unique hobby that would take him all across America and make many friends along the way. They never came up with a group name but all shared one passion, being beer connoisseurs.

Greg is survived by: sister, Stephanie Berglund of San Rafael, CA; son, Jason Berglund of Kansas City; daughter, Zoe ‘Jessica Berglund’ Bysfield and husband Todd of Lenexa; and grandchildren, Tanner, Sierrah, Koby, Maddox, and Connor.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation has taken place.

Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 24, 2017, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson. Private family inurnment will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through Wednesday, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary. Manuel M. Hinojosa | 1933 – 2017 |

U.S. VeteranManuel Mateo Hinojosa, 84, of Hutchinson, died Thursday, August 17, 2017, at his home in Hutchinson. He was born January 9, 1933, in San Diego, TX, the son of Samuel and Antonia (Garza) Hinojosa. Manuel graduated from San Diego High School in 1951 and immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1959. Manuel worked as a machinist at Cessna and then at Dillons warehouse, where he was known as ‘Dad’, until his retirement in 2001. He was a member of Teamsters Local #795 and Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, South Hutchinson.

On August 5, 1956, Manuel married Cecilia Franco in Knickerbocker, Texas. They shared 61 years of marriage.

He is survived by: his wife, Cecilia, of the home; daughters, Amanda Hinojosa, Sylvia Diaz (Armando), Rebecca Augustine (Claude), all of Hutchinson, Bertha Dorzweiler (Lloyd) of Bel Aire; grandchildren, Renee Augustine of Portland, OR, Mychal Augustine (Christina) of Graz, Austria, Luke Moran, Steven Moran, Kyler Diaz and girlfriend Lauren Rust, Phillipe Diaz, Ector Diaz, Raul Diaz, Gracie Diaz, all of Hutchinson, Matthew Dorzweiler, Lisa Dorzweiler, Sara Masura; great-grandson, Ignacio Augustine; sister, Blanca Jaimes of Bishop, TX; sisters-in-law, Margaret Alvarez (Tony) of San Antonio, TX and Elizabeth Chavez of Phoenix, AZ; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Manuel was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Armando Jaimes.

Cuthbert has big day; Royals avoid sweep

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Cheslor Cuthbert homered and drove in three runs, Alcides Escobar also had three RBIs and the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Indians 7-4 on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep.

Cam Gallagher also drove in a run for the Royals, who finally got their bats going after scoring just once in the first two games of the series. Kansas City piled up 12 hits and six runs off Cleveland starter Danny Salazar (5-6), and finished with 15 hits for the day.

Jason Hammel (6-9) allowed three runs on five hits and a walk to win for only the second time since June 19. The Royals’ right-hander had been 1-3 with six no-decisions during that span.

Kelvin Herrera gave up a run against the bottom of the Indians’ order before finishing the game.
