Gordon knocks in go-ahead run against A’s

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Alex Gordon hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth after Oakland tied it in the bottom of the eighth, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Athletics 7-6 on Wednesday.

Alcides Escobar doubled to start the ninth against Blake Treinen (1-1), matching his season high with three hits. Then Gordon delivered his second run-scoring single of the series finale.

Oakland’s Matt Chapman hit a tying two-run homer in the eighth against Brandon Maurer (1-1), who wound up the winner.

Lorenzo Cain hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Danny Duffy struck out eight over five innings but the Royals couldn’t hold a late lead again before holding on — a day after squandering a four-run advantage in a 10-8 defeat.

Cain added a key RBI single in the eighth for the Royals, who began the day tied with Minnesota six games behind AL Central-leading Cleveland.

Elvira “Mom” T. Peters | 1929 – 2017 |

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Elvira T. ‘Mom’ Peters, 87, of South Hutchinson, died Sunday, August 13, 2017, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born August 14, 1929, in St. John, the daughter of John S. and Ruth (Rellez) Muci. Elvira graduated from St. John High School in 1947 and worked at the former Peppermill Restaurant in Hutchinson, as a clerk at Kmart, and as a house mother at the men’s dormitory at Hutchinson Community College until her retirement in 1992. She was a member of the Walnut and Campbell Church of Christ.

On May 2, 1949, Elvira married Solomon L. Espinosa in St. John. They later divorced. She married Vincent L. Peters on November 20, 1970, in Lyons. He died July 6, 1976.

Elvira is survived by: daughter, Linda Plett of Inman; foster son, Don Tillman of Pratt; grandson, Jacob Plett (Jenna) of South Hutchinson; granddaughter, Ali Plett of Hutchinson; brothers, C.F. Muci (Marlene) and J.R. Muci (Rhita) all of Wichita, John Ben Muci (Jeanene) of Hutchinson; sister, Emelia Kittel (Norman) of Lawrence; sister-in-law, Helen Muci of Fullerton, CA; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; brother, Stan Muci; sisters, Ruth E. Muci and Raquel Patrick; and brother-in-law, Jerry Patrick.

Private family service will be held Saturday, August 19, 2017, at Eastside Cemetery, 500 S. Cleveland St., Hutchinson, with Pastor Bob Phipps officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, with the family present to receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. The casket will remain closed. Memorials may be made to Mennonite Friendship Communities or Cause for Paws, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Richard ‘Dick’ Siegrist, 90, died August 13, 2017, at his home. He was born February 22, 1927, in Hutchinson, to Melvin ‘Shorty’ and Frances (French) Siegrist.

Dick graduated from Partridge High School in 1945. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a member of the Nickerson Masonic Lodge #43. Dick retired as a farmer and stockman.

On January 7, 1951, he married Evelyn Mae Loeppke in Hutchinson. She died October 26, 2007.

Dick is survived by: daughters, Jennifer Scofield (Bill) of Wichita; Janet Hilgers (Rich) of Sterling; grandchildren, Julie Hanschu (Shamus Partain), Randy Hilgers; Ricky Hilgers (Cindy); great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Evelyn Hanschu, Leigha and Lucas Hilgers; and brother-in-law, Glen Loeppke (Roxanne) of Shell Knob, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers-in-law, Gene and Loren Loeppke.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, August 18, 2017, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Shelby Crawford officiating. Burial will follow in Partridge Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary. A’s rally past Royals

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Matt Joyce hit a three-run double to cap a six-run eighth inning and the Oakland Athletics rallied past the Kansas City Royals 10-8 on Tuesday night.

Joyce also homered and had four RBIs. Khris Davis added his 33rd home run and Matt Olson hit his fourth in five days to help the A’s clinch at least a tie for the season series between the former division rivals.

The Royals hit three home runs in the top of the eighth, including Mike Moustakas’ 35th, to take a four-run lead before Oakland stormed back against relievers Joakim Soria and Mike Minor (5-5).

Ryon Healy and Olson hit RBI singles off Soria. Matt Chapman and Chad Pinder struck out swinging, and pinch-hitter Rajai Davis was intentionally walked to load the bases before Joyce lined a 1-0 pitch from Minor off the left-field wall.

The loss prevented the Royals from moving past the Angels in the race for the second AL wild card.

Gallagher’s second career hit lifts Royals over A’s

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Cam Gallagher hit a grand slam for his first career home run and second big league hit, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Oakland Athletics 6-2 on Monday night.

Gallagher’s shot into the left-field seats in the sixth inning marked the first grand slam by a Royals rookie since Paulo Orlando connected in the first game of a doubleheader against Tampa Bay on July 7, 2015.

Jake Junis (5-2), recalled for his seventh stint with Kansas City this season, allowed two runs and four hits in six innings with two strikeouts and no walks.

The Royals moved into a second-place tie with the idle Twins, five games back of AL Central-leading Cleveland.

Lt. Col. Donald L. “Buns” Fraizer | 1930 – 2017 |

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Lt. Col. Donald L. ‘Buns’ Fraizer, retired, 87, died August 9, 2017, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born March 12, 1930, in Cullison, Kansas, to Ray Wallace Fraizer and Eulalia Myrtle (Cumming) Fraizer.

Donald graduated from Pratt High School in 1948. While attending Kansas State University, he played on the football and track teams. Donald served in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1972 as a Fighter Pilot during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. After retiring from the Air Force, Donald graduated with his bachelor’s degree from Sterling College in 1978. He received his master’s degree from Wichita State University. Donald then taught art and social studies at Trinity Catholic High School and helped to coach the high school track and field team, up until April of this year. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #7279, Kappa Sigma, and Church of the Holy Cross.

On December 28, 1951, he married Jean Ann Jacob in Pratt. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage.

Survivors include: wife, Jean of Hutchinson; children, Allen (Ignacio) of Dallas, Texas, Elaine Pope (Matt) of Hutchinson, Denise Hilt (David) of Fort Worth, Texas, Denis (Carol) of Wichita, Gregory of Hutchinson; sister-in- law, Edyce Fraizer of Wichita; ten grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jack Fraizer.

Cremation has taken place. Parish Rosary will be 7 p.m. Sunday, August 13, 2017, at Church of the Holy Cross, 2631 Independence Road, with Father Bob Pinninti officiating. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, August 14, 2017, with Father Aaron Spexarth, Father Bob Pinninti, and Father Daniel Duling officiating. Inurnment will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson, with military honors conducted by the United States Air Force. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. The family will receive friends at the church following the Rosary from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
