HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to Reno County Treasurer Brenda Kowitz, numerous tax statements have been returned to the Treasurer’s Office because they are undeliverable or the customer has moved.

She says tax statements are not forwarded, therefore, they are returned.

She says they’ll gladly help any customer who has not received their statement.

Residents are asked to make sure they have received their statement to make the payment on time.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Officials with the Kansas Cattle Drive announced this week that the event next year will be moving to Pretty Prairie. It’s been held in Buhler since it started.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 51-year-old man who already has a protection from abuse order against him is now facing possible charges of aggravated battery – domestic violence.

Brian Goodwin got into an altercation with his girlfriend after the two argued about him chatting with another woman.

He is accused of striking the victim with a wooden board, causing a lump and an abrasion on her forehead.

She was found outside the home in the 300 block of West 6th around 11:25 p.m. Tuesday and told police what happened.

Goodwin was found at a home on 9th Street, where he does not reside, hiding in a closet. He was arrested for violating the protection from abuse order.

He’s jailed on a bond of $10,500 and will be back in court next week.

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler Community Foundation announced late Tuesday that donors made their gifts greater on Match Day. Buhler grew by more than $24,000.

The gifts will permanently fund projects in Buhler.

Since its inception, the Buhler Community Foundation has awarded more than $49,000 in grants.

Here are the results for the Match Day event:

The Fund for Buhler received $17,543, that includes a $10,000 board match.

Buhler Public Health Endowment received $650.

Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community Endowment Fund picked up $3,705.

The Buhler USD 313 Educational Endowment Fund received $2,380.

That brings the total to $24,278.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Crews are scheduled to begin repairing cracks on more than eight miles of U.S. 50 in Reno County on Dec. 4.

The project will start on U.S. 50 from the four-lane/two-lane division east of Hutchinson and continue east to the Reno/Harvey county line.

Pavement Pros, LLC, of McPherson is the primary contractor for the $117,977 project. The contractor has 45 working days to complete the project.

Flaggers and a pilot car will control traffic.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — During the snow storm over the weekend, some mailboxes were knocked over or damaged by snow plows because of the terrible visibility during strong winds Sunday.

When Reno County Public Works officials learned about what happened, they sent crews out Monday to replace or repair all boxes that were damaged.

Don Brittain, superintendent for the department, says this happens occasionally. He says Public Works keeps boxes and posts in stock just in case.

He didn’t know the exact number of mailboxes that were damaged, but says they replaced six or so.

WICHITA, Kan. — A Hutchinson woman was sentenced Tuesday to seven years in federal prison for drug and firearm charges.

Kimberly R. Phillips, 35, pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute oxycodone and one count of carrying a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.

Investigators found 64 tablets of oxycodone when they searched her residence. When investigators stopped her car, they found her Derringer handgun and methamphetamine.

She told investigators she was selling drugs to pay back her bondsman.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Commission approved the issuance of industrial revenue bonds for the Agri Center project. The project is complete, but the company, and not the county, will be responsible for paying off the bonds.

Officials with the company indicated they have already added an additional five jobs with the facility opening. An open house is planned for Dec. 6.

The commission also approved the sewer rates for the Highlands, but revised the rates from what was originally in the resolution.

In the original resolution, the rate per month was at $78 for residential customers and $118 for commercial customers. During the meeting, Public Works Director Dave McComb said they have lowered the rates to $49 for residential customers and $89 for commercial customers. There is a $500 connection charge that must be paid in advance.

Commissioners also approved the resolution that will allow for the tax foreclosure on certain property owners who are three years behind on their taxes. Unless they make some payment on those taxes, their property would go on the yearly tax sale the next fall.
