HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 19-year-old Hutchinson woman made a first court appearance Friday after she apparently threatened someone at an apartment in the 600 block of North Maple with a steak knife.

Annastasia Dunn is charged with aggravated assault and battery — domestic violence.

The alleged crimes occurred on Oct. 6.

She was also told during a court hearing Friday to have no contact with the victim, which she objected to because she and the victim have a child together. Magistrate Judge Cheryl Allen denied her request to dismiss the no-contact order.

She will be back in court Oct. 31.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A man has been formally charged with distribution of methamphetamine for an arrest on Sept. 25.

The state alleges that Shane Labs had between 3.5 and 100 grams of methamphetamine at the time of his arrest. He’s also charged with possession of oxycodone on that same date.

He will be back in court Oct. 31.

He remains jailed on a $40,000 bond.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A student-athlete at Hutchinson Community College was arrested Wednesday at the dorms at 1501 N. Ford on charges for having a seller’s quantity of marijuana.

Twenty-year-old Leondrae Butts faces potential charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute within a thousand feet of a school and possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute.

Officials located two bags that contained suspected marijuana and other items used to smoke and sell the drug.

He apparently admitted to law enforcement that he was smoking and selling the marijuana from his dorm room.

Bond in the case was set at $17,500. However, during a first court appearance Thursday, it was lowered to $8,000.

TOPEKA, Kan. — At the League of Kansas Municipalities Annual Conference this week in Topeka, Tom Brown, mayor of McPherson, was named as the 2018 recipient of the E.A. Mosher Excellence in Local Government Award.

The award is presented to an elected city official who has demonstrated outstanding service to their city, promoted positive inter-governmental relations, and had an active commitment to the League.

According to officials, Mayor Brown was nominated for the award because he is a consummate champion for local government and puts passion into everything he does for the McPherson community.

He has served as McPherson’s mayor since 2009.

TOPEKA, Kan. — Six Kansas Lottery players including a woman from Hutchinson received “x-citing” news Thursday when the Lottery announced the winners of cash prizes in the “X” Games Bonus Cash second-chance drawings.

Barbara Jordan of Hutchinson was one of the winners and won $30,000.

The “X” Games instant scratch tickets were launched in January at six price points, including the Kansas Lottery’s first $30 ticket. Players had until Oct. 8 to submit their non-winning “X” tickets through PlayOn® for a chance to win cash in six second-chance drawings. The higher the price of the ticket submitted, the greater the potential prize.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After nearly two hours of deliberations, the jury found a man suspected in a series of robberies guilty as charged.

Jeffrey Howell was found guilty of multiple counts of aggravated robbery, kidnapping and one count of attempted aggravated robbery.

The first robbery occurred at Vic’s Dog Grooming on Oct. 26, 2016. Other robberies occurred in August and September of 2017.

Howell robbed the Dillons at 206 W. 5th and Kwik Shop locations at 1401 E. 4th and 1701 N. Monroe.

Howell declined to participate in his trial. His attorney sat alone at the defense table.

District Judge Tim Chambers set a special setting for sentencing on Nov. 16 at 1:30 p.m.

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Transportation announced projects and the companies that will do the work.

None of the projects will be in Reno County, but will affect some neighboring counties.

In Kingman County, there will be work on U.S. 54 beginning at the east Kingman city limits, going east to the K-14 junction. That will include milling and overlay for nine miles. Cornejo & Sons, LLC, of Wichita will do the work at a cost $2,409,513.70.

In Pratt County, work will be done on U.S. 281 from the Iuka city limits north to the Pratt-Stafford county line. This work will include an ultra-thin bonded asphalt surfacing for 6.7 miles. Venture Corporation of Great Bend will do the work there at a cost of $548,130.87.

And in Stafford County, the work will continue on U.S. 281 from the Pratt-Stafford county line north to the U.S. 50 junction. Again, an ultra-thin bonded asphalt surfacing will take place for 9.1 miles. Venture Corporation of Great Bend was also awarded the contract at a cost of $767,100.89.
