TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas Supreme Court appointed three people to the Kansas Child Support Guidelines Advisory Committee and reappointed four others.

The 13-member Kansas Child Support Guidelines Advisory Committee includes parents who either pay or receive child support and attorneys, judges, and tax professionals with expertise in child support.

Ryan Brady of Hutchinson was appointed to a four-year term ending June 30, 2022. He is a parent representative.

The group reviews the general rules governing how child support is established, evaluates the economic basis of the guidelines, analyzes how courts may use adjustments to tailor child support obligations to meet the needs of families, identifies whether updates to the Kansas Child Support Guidelines are needed and makes those recommendations to the Kansas Supreme Court.

The child support guidelines are reviewed every four years to ensure that the roughly $35 million mothers and fathers pay in support each month is equitable for the parents and appropriate for the day-to-day essential needs of the children they support.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two people were arrested after they led police officers on a chase in the city.

Nicholas Karches and Michelle Sage face numerous charges after a Hutchinson man reported a burglary where 25 pairs of tennis shoes and other memorabilia were stolen. The owner estimates the items are valued around $4,000.

Later, police spotted a vehicle that matched the description of one stolen out of Wichita, but the driver refused to stop for police. That led to a chase for about 15 minutes. Police attempted to use stop sticks, but the driver went around them. Eventually, he collided with a police car at 11th & Halstead. Both suspects were taken into custody. The officer in the crash suffered minor injuries.

Police apparently found a pair of tennis shoes in the vehicle that matched a pair taken in the burglary. Officers did not find any of the other stolen items.

Charges against Karches include aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer, burglary of a dwelling, felony theft, simple theft and possession of stolen property, that being the Dodge Journey.

Sage faces similar charges, including possession of stolen property, theft and burglary.

Both will be back in court next week.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 30-year-old man already charged with inhaling toxic vapors and possession of marijuana was arrested Wednesday on new charges.

Clayton Evans was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, flee and elude, interference with a law enforcement officer and three traffic charges.

Police had stopped his vehicle for an expired tag and other violations. One of the passengers in his vehicle took off running and the other was detained. But Evans took off southbound from the Kwik Shop at 17th and Lorraine. Officers then found that vehicle abandoned. They eventually spotted him walking in the 1400 block of Huxman. Upon questioning, Evans gave officers his brother’s name.

They eventually learned Evans’ real identity and arrested him. Officers found a bag with white residue as well as some prescription drugs. Evans’ had a warrant for his previous case.

His bond was set at $7,150. Evans’ request for a bond reduction was denied.

He will be back in court next week.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A tip to law enforcement about a Hutchinson man wanting to sell a handgun led to the search of an apartment in Hutchinson Tuesday.

Once inside, officers found drugs including a bag of marijuana in a seller’s quantity, some guns and drug paraphernalia.

Twenty-two-year-old Dallas Combs and 21-year-old Rommie Jackson were arrested.

Authorities apparently saw Combs leaving the apartment in the 100 block of East B and a search of his person indicated that he had drugs on him.

Pending charges against the two include possession of marijuana and other drugs with intent to distribute within a thousand feet of a school, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a stolen gun and criminal possession of a gun. Both have prior convictions, making it unlawful for them to possess guns.

Jackson has a bond of $26,000. Combs’ bond is $16,000.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Longtime Hutchinson Veterinarian Dr. Elden Austin, 82, died Tuesday, Aug. 21.

Dr. Austin graduated from Colorado A&M University in 1959. He went immediately into the Air Force and was stationed at Plattsburgh Air Force Base, a former United States Air Force Strategic Air Command base.

He purchased Hutchinson Small Animal Hospital in December of 1961 and was the first veterinarian in the area to focus on small animals instead of a mixed veterinary practice.

He also started KWBW’s Pet Patrol along with the late Hod Humiston in the 1960s and the Emergency Veterinarian call rotation.

He was past board president of Prairie Dunes, an avid golfer and Rotarian.

Dr. Austin was known for being caring and compassionate and retired in February of 2009 after 47 years in practice.

Services will be this Saturday, 2:00 p.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church at 17th & Main.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 36-year-old Wichita man was arrested Tuesday evening after he led Hutchinson police officers in a chase that ended with a crash. A police officer was injured.

Authorities had been looking for William Scott for some time because of outstanding warrants. An officer spotted Scott and attempted to pull him over. Scott refused to stop his vehicle and led officers in a high-speed chase.

Scott eventually crashed into the officer at 9th & Lorraine. The officer, identified as Mike Rivers, went to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for an X-ray of his foot, according to Police Sgt. Josh Radloff.

Scott faces possible charges of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer, felony flee and elude, and driving while suspended.

He’s been on corrections for a conviction of criminal possession of a firearm and was listed as an absconder in that case.

His bonds total $32,500. He is expected back in court next week.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 41-year-old man is jailed on a $45,000 bond after his arrest on drug distribution charges.

Law enforcement served a search warrant on a home belonging to Domonic Zales and say they found a fairly large amount of methamphetamine, multiple scales and a 22-caliber handgun.

Potential charges include possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute and for personal use, and criminal possession of a firearm.

Zales has prior convictions for criminal threat and possession of opiates in Crawford County from 2014 and 2015.

He’ll be back in court on Aug. 28.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A South Hutchinson man made a first court appearance for charges associated with sexual abuse of children.

A 15-year-old girl was apparently going to Horizons for depression. It was learned that she had been sexually abused for some time by Shawn Rosenberg.

Also, a woman who is now 20 years old alleges she was sexually abused by Rosenberg. She says the abuse goes back to when she was 8 or 9 years old.

Potential charges against Rosenberg include two counts of violation of a protection from abuse order, aggravated sexual battery, aggravated indecent liberties with a child, and rape.

He’s jailed on a $161,000 bond. He should be back in court on Aug. 28.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 56-year-old Nickerson man with a long criminal history and already facing trial in one case has been charged in two more.

Michael Curran is now charged with two more counts of distribution of methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of Nickerson High School. The state alleges that the crimes occurred on Feb. 8 and Feb. 19.

Curran has already been charged in another case where law enforcement officers say they found nearly two pounds of methamphetamine, nearly two ounces of marijuana, 30 milligrams of oxycodone pills, a large digital scale, packaging materials, pipes with residue for smoking meth, a 22-caliber handgun, a 22-caliber rifle and $4,000 in cash. That case goes back to March.

Curran will be back in court Wednesday. A preliminary hearing date on the two new charges is expected to be set.
