HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 36-year-old Hutchinson man serving over 18 years in prison in a kidnapping case, as well as other convictions, has a habeas corpus motion pending in front of Reno County District Judge Trish Rose.
Todd Lloyd is serving time for holding his girlfriend at knife-point, but also threatening the lives of two Hutchinson Police officers during a court hearing on the kidnapping case.
During a hearing Friday morning, it was brought to the judge’s attention that he has filed a motion on his own asking to represent himself during any future hearings.
Judge Rose decided that she wants to hear arguments from Lloyd on this motion and set a hearing date of Aug. 23.
Lloyd was found guilty for threatening Sgt. Josh Radloff and Sgt. Eric Buller after a bench trial. Both officers worked the kidnapping case. Lloyd looked directly at the officers after the verdict and threatened to kill them if he ever got out of jail.
He was arrested on April 23, 2014, when he came close to being shot by both Hutchinson officers during the altercation with his girlfriend. He eventually threw the knife down and, after a brief struggle, was taken into custody.
He’s currently serving his sentence at the Ellsworth Correctional Facility.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County commissioners will hold a public hearing for the 2020 budget during their meeting next Tuesday.
The proposed budget for next year totals $75,687,419 on total taxes levied of $25,080,339. With that, the mill levy will stay at 41.6 mills. The budget includes increases for employee benefits, totaling more than $11.3 million and capital improvements totaling $1.135 million.
The county’s road and bridge fund are proposed at $6.5 million with several large projects in the works for next year.
This is residents’ last chance to comment on the budget before it’s adopted for next year.
Also on the agenda, is allowing public works to sell surplus property of the Purple Wave Auction site. Included is a 2002 three-quarter ton Chevy Silverado pickup and numerous other items.
The Commission will consider a memorandum of understanding for continuance of WIC Dietitian services with Rice County.
They will also receive updates from Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson and District Attorney Keith Schroeder.
The Reno County Commission meeting onTuesday begins at 9 a.m. at the Reno County Courthouse.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 40-year-old man facing three cases may have his trial continued after the defense noted that some of the items they’re requesting may take some time to receive.
Richard Andrew Petty faces charges for breach of privacy in disseminating sexual media of a person 18 or older and blackmail for videotapes and photos of a person.
The state alleges the blackmail charge occurred Sept. 1, and Sept. 14, 2018. Petty tried to persuade a person against her will by threatening to disseminate pictures or videotape.
The breach of privacy charge occurred Sept. 13, when he released photos or videos of the victim in a sexual act.
Petty was arrested on warrant after an investigation by the Hutchinson Police Department.
Petty has another case where a stalking charge was filed.
His attorney is requesting photos and any text messages between the victim and former Hutchinson Police Detective Jamie Schoenhoff, but the state in response says that police do not have any text between the two and that any pictures they received have been given to the defense.
Reno County District Judge Trish Rose set a status hearing later this month on this issue.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – With all the cost associated with getting your kids enrolled and off to school, the Hutchinson Community College cosmetology students will be giving free haircuts to kids going into grades K through 12.
This will occur at their facility from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at 200 East 3rd.
The 3rd annual event with First Call for Help is designed to help send the kids off to school with new cuts.
To qualify for a haircut, children must be enrolling in school for grades K-12 in Reno County.
Officials say they will try to serve as many kids as possible, but will stop bringing in new people for cuts at 3:30 p.m.
Haircuts will be done first come first serve and there is no need to register or book an appointment.
If your child needs a haircut prior to starting school, here is your chance and again there is no cost.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A man arrested Feb. 17, 2018, for distribution of marijuana got a break from the state Thursday when they dropped the charge to simple possession of marijuana.
Xavier Terry was scheduled for a preliminary hearing on the initial charge for allegedly selling between 25 and 450 grams of marijuana. The arrest was made by the Haven Police Department, but Deputy District Attorney Tom Stanton decided to make the offer leading Terry to except and entered the plea.
Stanton says Terry who is now playing football in West Virginia will have to pay court cost as part of his six month probation. He also agreed to pay the Reno County Sheriff’s Office back the cost for bringing him back to Kansas to face the charge. That comes to roughly $2,000.
Ayers named production manager at Sunflower Diversified ServicesGREAT BEND, Kan. – It didn’t take Willie Ayers long to make the leap from an entry-level job to a management position at Sunflower Diversified Services.
He started as a truck driver for a business-recycling route a little over a year ago. Today. he’s production manager at Sunflower, a nonprofit agency that serves people with intellectual disabilities and delays in central Kansas.
“I was fortunate enough to be given this new opportunity,” Ayers said. “I like what we do here and love working with our clients. We are giving them the chance to be productive in a rewarding job, while earning their own paychecks.”
The production manager job entails a wide range of responsibilities. These include overseeing the recycling operations and manufacturing plant, scheduling, taking inventory and ensuring the equipment and plant facilities are operating smoothly.
In addition, he’s responsible for quality assurance, customer service and helping provide a safe work environment.
“My passion for many years was to be a mechanic,” Ayers said. “Then I saw the ad for the recycling truck driver and it sounded like something I wanted to do.
“Truthfully, I love my work here at Sunflower,” he continued. “The clients are great. If you are having a bad day for some reason, at least one client will change your thinking and turn it into a good day.”
Ayers and Sunflower crews spend many hours each week responding to the community’s recycling needs. These include the business pick-up routes and the processing plant near the airport, along with the two drop-off sites in Great Bend.
These sites are located at the main recycling center, 5523 10th, and the parking lot at 18th and Williams where a trailer is available.
“All these services fall under the recycling umbrella,” Ayers noted. “It is great that quite a few clients are employed throughout our recycling operation.”
Ayers moved to Great Bend about a year ago from California where he was a mechanic.
Sarah Krom, Sunflower chief operating officer, said “Willie knows the job from the ground up. As a route driver, he worked with business customers and clients to meet the goals of our industrial and business pick-up services.
“Willie also appreciates the unique skills of our staff and clients. He collaborates with his colleagues to bring new ideas to enhance services and meet Sunflower’s goals.”
Sunflower serves infants, toddlers and adults in Barton, Pawnee, Rice, Rush and Stafford counties. It is in its 53rd year.

Kaedynce Elliott is 20 months old and is currently at Children’s Mercy in Kansas City, Mo., suffering a complication due to E. coli. The event will raise funds to help her family with medical expenses, travel costs and time off work.
A portion of all sales from 4 to 10 p.m., including the buffet, dine-in, carry-out delivery, will go to the Elliott family.
Gambino’s will open its buffet, which is not usually held on Thursday nights, just for the fundraiser from 5 to 8 p.m.
According to a Facebook post, there will also be a silent auction, raffle and vendors.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Fire Crews worked a house fire at 1422 Woodlawn around 1:20 a.m. Thursday morning.
First arriving fire units found heavy fire showing from the rear of the structure. The fire was reported by the occupants, according to a media release.
The fire began under a covered porch in the rear and quickly spread to the attic of the home prior to the fire fighter’s arrival.
Fire damage to the home is significant, however fire fighters were able to contain the fire to the original structure as a home to the north located 20 feet away suffered moderate siding damage.
Fire fighters did locate one cat in the home, despite resuscitation efforts, the cat did not survive. They are apparently searching for a second cat.
The two adult occupants did escape without injury. Red Cross is assisting the family and a board up company was called to assisted in securing the property,
Hutchinson fire investigator has ruled the fire as careless smoking.
PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. – One person was taken to the hospital just after 10 a.m. Wednesday after a two vehicle accident in the county. It happened at K-14 and Longview Rd., in Reno County.
Dennis Hendershot from Pretty Prairie was stopped in the north bound lane of traffic due to construction. While he was waiting for the southbound lane to clear, he was rear ended by Keaton Danahy also of Pretty Prairie.
Hendershot was not injured but Danahy was transported to the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts, according to the sheriff’s department. Deputies also issued a ticket, according to the report.
