HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It’s a sure sign that summer is getting closer. The city’s splash pads are now open and operating at Rice Park, Avenue A Park and Fairgrounds Park.

The pads let kids, and even adults, get cooled off on those warm days of spring and summer.

The hours of operation are from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The sentencing for a man found guilty of first-degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm in Reno County District Court has been delayed.

Brennan Trass was scheduled to be sentenced Friday after being found guilty for the two charges associated with the shooting and killing of 24-year-old Jose Morales in August of 2015. Trass shot and killed Morales in a Hutchinson residence in what the state says was an illegal drug transaction.

Trass pulled the gun from the waistband of the victim and fired three shots at Morales. He then fired 10 more shots down a hall at others attempting to flee the home.

Reno County District Judge Trish Rose agreed to have Trass sent to Larned State Hospital as part of the presentence investigation. She says no new date has been set for sentencing.

Trass could receive a life sentence with no chance of parole for 51 years.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A local man charged with rape and aggravated criminal sodomy now wants a new attorney.

Nathan Allen Crum is accused of sexually assaulting a local woman he met online. Crum invited her to his home to watch a movie. He’s then accused of forcing her into a sexual relationship after she repeatedly said no. Crum admitted they had sex, but claims the sexual relationship was consensual. The alleged crimes occurred Aug. 17.

In his motion, Crum noted that his Wichita attorney, Steve Osburn, hasn’t subpoenaed text messages that were deleted for his defense. He also argues that his attorney has tried to get him to take a plea deal that would send him to prison for 15 years — a deal Crum is not interested in.

Crum says he has lost faith in Osburn and wants a new attorney. Reno County District Judge Tim Chambers will consider the motion during his Friday docket.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 22-year-old man accused in a drug distribution case was arrested Tuesday after he fought with a Hutchinson police officer.

Rommie Jackson was seen walking along Lorraine Street in Hutchinson by a police officer. The officer stopped and made contact with Jackson. While talking with Jackson, the officer repeatedly asked him to keep his hands in plain view. After a short time, Jackson began to fight. The officer attempted to place handcuffs on Jackson. Jackson struck the officer in the eye and left cheek.

Jackson had six outstanding warrants and was arrested for interference with a law enforcement officer, battery of a law enforcement officer and possession of marijuana.

Jackson was arrested last summer after officials received a tip about a man wanting to sell a handgun. That tip led to the search of an apartment. Once inside, officers found drugs including a bag of marijuana in a seller’s quantity, some guns and drug paraphernalia.

Dallas Combs and Jackson were arrested and suspected in the case.

Jackson has numerous prior convictions involving the distribution of drugs and criminal possession of a firearm.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two outstanding Hutchinson Community College students were recently recognized as the 2019 Young Kansan Award winners.

Cade Lohrding of Protection and Dixie Miller of Farmington, Arkansas, were recognized from a field of students nominated for the honor. The Young Kansan award recognizes the outstanding male and female graduate each year at Hutchinson Community College and is chosen by a vote of the faculty and administration at the college.

The award is sponsored by RCB Bank. Each winner received a plaque and a cash honorarium in recognition of their achievements.

Miller is graduating with an Associate of Science degree, studying Agriculture Education, Communication & Technology. While attending HutchCC, she has been involved in Farm Bureau, Block & Bridle as the secretary, a member of Phi Theta Kappa, a student worker in the Student Success Center and was the only sophomore girl on the Livestock Judging team.

After graduation, Dixie plans to transfer to the University of Arkansas to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Education.

Lohrding is graduating with an Associate of Science degree. He is currently the president of the Student Government Association, a Student Ambassador and a student worker in the Student Success Center. Cade will be attending Wichita State University next fall to major in History.

Miller and Lohrding will be recognized during the HutchCC Commencement Ceremonies on Friday.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man arrested April 26 on a charge of aggravated battery appeared in court Tuesday morning.

Nalica McKinnley was charged after he admitted to firing a shotgun that wounded 47-year-old Marc Chambers.

Chambers was taken by private vehicle and left at the hospital by another man present that night: Johnathan Kelly. Chambers was later taken to a Wichita hospital in serious condition.

Police had trouble finding Kelly. Once authorities found him, Kelly agreed to talk. He admitted the weapon belonged to him, but said it was McKinnley who fired the shot. Kelly was arrested for having a criminal history and being in possession of the weapon.

Kelly managed to make bond after his arrest for criminal use of weapons, criminal possession of a firearm and interference with law enforcement.

Both suspects say the shooting was accidental.
