Accident sends Wichita man to hospital

PARTRIDGE, Kan. — A 71-year-old man was taken to the hospital after a two-vehicle accident in Partridge yesterday evening.

James Coffin of Wichita says his vehicle was struck by a pickup in the intersection of F and Lyons streets in Partridge. The pickup was driven by 27-year-old Nicholas Smith of Garden Plain.

Smith had been northbound on Lyons Street and failed to stop at the stop sign and struck Coffin’s vehicle. Coffin was evaluated and transported by EMS to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. Smith and his passenger, 29-year-old James Motis of Wichita, reported no injuries and were wearing their seat belts.

The accident occurred just after 7:30 p.m.

Reno County Commission gives letter of support to day care facility

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Something that the Buhler school district has been wanting to do with an old elementary school has gained support from the Reno County Commission.

The commission approved a letter of support for the proposed Obee Day Care Center and the issuance of tax credits to make the necessary capital improvements to turn the old school into a day care.

School officials believe the school would be a good place to have such a facility. Officials were not able to sell the property after the school closed a couple of years ago.

Commission Chairman Bob Bush and Commissioner Ron Hirst stated their support for this idea saying the need is there, not only in the Hutchinson area, but also in rural areas of the county.

Hirst was also critical of the state for all of the paperwork that has to be filled out by those wanting to open a day care facility.

State adds aggravated battery charge in prison case

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 33-year-old Hutchinson Correctional Facility inmate was bound over for trial Monday on three charges involving the stabbing of a correctional officer.

Mark Baker is now charged with battery of a corrections officer, or in the alternative aggravated battery, and trafficking contraband in a correctional institution. The alleged crimes occurred on Dec. 6, 2018.

It started when the correctional officer told Baker to go back to his cell. Baker refused. The officer told the court that he had to tell Baker three or four times, yet Baker refused. At one point, they were near his cell cussing at each other. Baker apparently grabbed a shank and attacked the officer with it. The officer suffered six abrasions, including at least two puncture wounds.

The officer was taken to the Hutchinson Clinic where he was stabilized. He was then taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center as a trauma patient. He spent a day in the hospital for treatment, then he was released.

Baker wanted to speak with a counselor at the prison, but there was no paperwork associated with that request, so the request was denied.

Because he is at the prison, the defense wants arraignment as soon as possible. That could happen Tuesday in front of District Judge Trish Rose.

Baker is serving time for numerous convictions out of Labette County including first-degree murder, abuse of a child, theft, obstruction, and possession of drugs and paraphernalia. That case goes back to 2011.

Woman formally charged in 2 distribution cases from 2018

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Reno County woman has been charged in two separate drug distribution cases.

Paula Bishop is charged with two counts of distribution of methamphetamine, two counts of conspiracy to distribute meth with James Shaw Jr., and using a cellphone to make the drug transactions.

The first incident allegedly occurred Oct. 30, the second on Nov. 29.

In court Monday, she requested a reduction of her $100,000 bond. Magistrate Judge Daniel Gilligan agreed to drop the bond to $50,000.

Bishop will be back in court next month.

Lightning damages main apron at Hutchinson Airport

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – A lightning strike damaged the main apron of the Hutchinson Airport Sunday evening.

Airport Manager Pieter Miller said he got the call from the flight control tower Sunday night.

“About 7:15 or so, I got a call from the control tower and they reported the main apron just east of the restaurant here and that it blew chunks of concrete in each direction,” Miller said.

Miller said lightning strikes happen at the airport on occasion, but the damage this strike caused was extreme.

“I wouldn’t say it happens quite often, although we have been hit by lightning lots of time out here over the years. This is the most damage that I’ve seen happen at one time,” he said. “We’ve had a couple of hits on runways and of course, all of our windsocks and things like that get hit. I’ve never actually seen it blow a 6-by-10-foot chunk up in the air.”

At 852 PM CDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Mount Hope, moving east at 20 mph. This storm has a history of producing tornadoes and multiple reports of funnel clouds west of Andale and south of Mount Hope.

SOURCE…Weather spotters reported a funnel cloud.
