UNDATED (AP) — The Maui Invitational featuring Kansas and Michigan State, and the Battle 4 Atlantis with North Carolina and Gonzaga, are the headlining holiday tournaments this week. But just about every program with NCAA Tournament expectations will be in action, whether that’s trying to bring home a trophy or tuning up against a non-conference foe.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — After the Chiefs watched the Raiders lose to the Jets on Sunday, they return from their bye with a chance to face Oakland themselves. Beating their longtime rival on Sunday would give Kansas City a stranglehold on a fourth consecutive AFC West title.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma State’s offense has remained productive enough to win since losing its top receiver and starting quarterback to season-ending injuries. Dillon Stoner stepped up at receiver after Tylan Wallace’s injury. Backup quarterback Dru Brown performed well in place of Spencer Sanders in a win over West Virginia. The 21st-ranked Cowboys close the regular season against No. 8 Oklahoma.

National Headlines

UNDATED (AP) — Duke solidified its grip on No. 1 while the top four teams remained the same after a quiet week on the schedule in the AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll. The Blue Devils received 53 first-place votes from the 65-member media panel. Louisville received seven first-place votes and remained second, followed by Michigan State with four No. 1 nods. Kansas remained fourth while Maryland leapfrogged North Carolina into fifth. No. 24 Florida was only newcomer to the poll. Texas dropped out.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lamar Jackson tied a career high with five touchdown passes and the Baltimore Ravens improved to 9-2 with their seventh straight win, a 45-6 blowout over the Rams in Los Angeles. Jackson was 15 of 20 for 169 yards and also picked up 95 yards rushing on just eight carries. Marquise Brown and Willie Snead each grabbed two scoring passes, while Mark Ingram scored two touchdowns while rushing for 111 yards.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indianapolis Colts have put Pro Bowl tight end Eric Ebron on injured reserve with an ankle injury that’s expected to sideline him the rest of the season. The move comes days after top receiver T.Y. Hilton returned to the lineup and at a time when Indy’s offense has struggled. Ebron had 31 receptions for 375 yards and three touchdowns in his second season with the 6-5 Colts.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Bob Davie has agreed to step aside as New Mexico’s head football coach at the end of the season. Davie is 35-63 with the Lobos as he completes his eighth season at the school, leading the team to two bowl games. New Mexico is 2-9 this season following losses in its last eight games.

BOSTON (AP) — Boston Celtics guard Kemba Walker will be kept out of the lineup until he’s able to participate in a full practice. Walker collided with a teammate head-first and went down to the court in a heap against the Denver Nuggets on Friday night. A brace was placed around his neck and he was strapped to a backboard before being placed onto a gurney and wheeled off the court. However, the Celtics say the injury isn’t serious.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Xavier Johnson made a short jumper with 10.1 seconds left to give his team the lead, then made two free throws with 4.6 seconds to help Pittsburgh top Kansas State 63-59 in the Fort Myers TipOff on Monday night.

“Coach drew up a play and I’m pretty good at driving to the basket,” Johnson said. “It’s a great win.”

After seeing a 57-51 lead disappear as they couldn’t score for 3:56, the Panthers (5-2) scored six points in the last 10.1 seconds. Two more free throws by Justin Champagnie clinched it with 0.1 seconds left.

Ryan Murphy and Eric Hamilton both scored 13 points for Pitt while Johnson and Champagnie added 12 each.

The Panthers won despite making just 1 of 16 3-pointers and committing 21 turnovers. They did hit 47% of their shots, went 18 of 21 on free throws and had a 40-30 rebounding advantage.

“When you have 21 turnovers and two assists, how do you win a game like that?” Pitt coach Jeff Capel said. “You go out and rebound like we did. Show toughness. We’re not going to out-talent most teams and they have players and a program that has a culture.”

Cartier Diarra scored 13 and DaJuan Gordon added 12, 10 straight in the first half, for Kansas State (4-1), which made just 3 of 13 free throws.

“That’s not gonna happen again,” Diarra said.

Xavier Sneed, who came in leading K-State with 16 points per game, didn’t score until 15:40 remained in the second half. He finished with eight points.

For the first time this season, Kansas State had a first-half lead, going up 30-28. The Wildcats took a 9-0 lead. They also led 27-17 before Pitt rallied.

“We didn’t finish off that first half,” Diarra said. “If we keep that 10-point lead, it’s a different story.”

BIG PICTURE

Pitt: The Panthers are starting to build a nice resume with victories over two teams, which made the NCAA Tournament last season. Pitt opened the season by beating Florida State 63-61. However, it does have a big blemish, a 75-70 loss to Nicholls State.

Kansas State: Picked to finish ninth in the Big 12, the Wildcats play defense of an NCAA-Tournament caliber team but offense can be hard to find at times, especially if Sneed struggles to score and Makol Mawien gets in foul trouble like they did Monday night. They came in averaging a combined 25.5 points per game but ended up with 12 against Pitt.

LAHAINA, Hawaii — Devin Dotson scored 19 points, Udoka Azubuike added 15 despite early foul trouble and No. 5 Kansas cruised to a 93-63 victory over Division II Chaminade at the Maui Invitational on Monday.

The Jayhawks (4-1) jumped on the Silverswords (2-1) with a huge early run and never let up, shooting 55% while making 12 of 29 from 3-point range. Kansas scored 36 points off Chaminade’s 27 turnovers and had a 50-22 advantage in the paint.

Isaiah Moss had 13 points for the two-time Maui champion Jayhawks, who move on to face UCLA or BYU in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Andre Arissol had 18 points and Tyler Cartaino 17 to lead Chaminade.

Kansas opened the season with a two-point loss to Duke after turning it over a whopping 28 times. The Jayhawks have gotten a better grip since then, heading into Maui with three straight double-digit wins.

Chaminade returned to the championship round this year after playing in the opening rounds last season.

The tournament hosts have had a knack for pulling off upsets against bigger opponents, most recently against California in 2017.

The Silverswords opened by making three of their first four shots to take a brief lead.

Very brief.

Once the Jayhawks got acclimated to shooting in the tiny confines of Lahaina Civic Center, they flew away from Chaminade. Kansas used a 20-2 run to go up 20-7 and made 18 of 32 shots to lead 47-27 at halftime Azubuike limited seven minutes due to foul trouble.

Another short run to start the second half put the Jayhawks up 61-33 and the game out of reach.

BIG PICTURE

Kansas squelched any thought of an upset with its big early run and cruised into the semifinals.

Chaminade needed to shoot well to have any chance of keeping it close and wasn’t nearly good enough to keep up with the Jayhawks.

UP NEXT

Kansas faces the UCLA-BYU winner in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Chaminade plays the UCLA-BYU loser.

After a fairly major shakeup in the NJCAA Men’s Division I Top 10 last week, the Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team finds itself one rung from the top of the rankings ladder.

The 8-0 Blue Dragons are No. 2 in this week’s rankings released on Monday. Hutchinson received one first-place vote. No. 1 Ranger garnered the other 15.

Former No. 3 Indian Hills, No. 5 Chipola, No. 7 Tallahassee and No. 8 USC Salkehatchie all suffered losses last week.

The new Top 5 is Ranger, Hutchinson, defending national champion Vincennes, Pearl River and South Plains.

Hutchinson had just one game last week, an 87-53 victory over Hesston College last Tuesday at the Sports Arena to move to 8-0.

The Blue Dragons have a daunting task to open the 2019-20 Jayhawk Conference season. Hutchinson plays host to No. 17 Coffeyville (8-2) on Wednesday at the Sports Arena and travels to Independence, now receiving votes after an 8-1 start on Saturday.

Hutchinson and Coffeyville are the only two KJCCC teams in the Top 25. Independence, Barton and Cowley are receiving votes.

Hutchinson has been ranked in 88 of the last 92 ranking periods.

The last time the Blue Dragons were ranked this high was the 2017-18 preseason rankings where they were No. 1. The last regular-season ranking of No. 2 or higher was the final regular-season poll of Hutchinson’s 2017 national championship season.

IRVING, Texas – Jared Butler (Baylor) picked up his first Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week while Jahmi’us Ramsey (Texas Tech) earned his first Newcomer of the Week accolade. The weekly honor is the second in Butler’s career as he received a newcomer recognition last season.

Butler was named the Myrtle Beach Invitational Most Valuable Player after leading the Bears to three wins and the tournament title. He averaged 17.7 points, 3.7 assists and 2.7 steals while knocking down all 10 of his free throw attempts. The sophomore guard tallied 22 points against No. 17 Villanova in the championship game that featured 18 lead changes. He checked in with 6:14 remaining and hit consecutive 3-pointers to give Baylor the lead for good.

Ramsey averaged 20 points and 6.5 rebounds in Texas Tech’s two wins last week. He poured in a season-high 27 points with five 3-pointers and six rebounds versus LIU after scoring 13 in a victory over Tennessee State. Against LIU, Ramsey was 10-for-16 from the field and 5-for-6 on 3-pointers to eclipse his previous freshman-best 25 points.

That happened right after the Duke standout’s freshman season and he used that as motivation throughout the rest of his college career.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Redshirt freshman CJ Fredrick scored a career-high 21 points, hitting all five of his 3s, and Iowa overwhelmed Cal Poly 85-59 for its third straight win. Luka Garza had 18 points with nine boards for the Hawkeyes in their final tuneup ahead of a stretch featuring significantly tougher opponents.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Marcus Zegarowski scored 19 points and Ty-Shon Alexander scored 18 and Creighton beat North Florida 76-67. Mitch Ballock added 15 points and 11 rebounds and Damien Jefferson scored 12 for the Bluejays, now winners of three straight.

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz posted 14 points as Liberty extended its season-opening winning streak to eight games, topping Kansas City 62-49 in the championship game of the Islands of the Bahamas Showcase. Scottie James had 12 points for Liberty (8-0) and Darius McGhee added 10 points.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Antwain Johnson hit two free throws with 5.7 seconds left to lift Buffalo to a 75-74 victory over Missouri State and take fifth place at the Charleston Classic. The Bulls had built a 13-point lead in the first half and were still up 56-47 with nine minutes left when the Bears rallied to set up the dramatic finish. The lead changed hands four times in the final four minutes, the last time on Johnson’s foul shots.

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — After a handful of college basketball games, several teams have ascended to the mountaintop only to be knocked off the throne. It may be the foreshadowing of the unpredictability that could run all the way to the men’s Final Four. A different team has sat atop The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll in each of the first three weeks for only the second time in history. Duke currently sits atop the poll _ for now.

MAUI, Hawaii — No. 4/5 Kansas (3-1) is set to begin bracket play in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational when it takes on Chaminade on Monday.

The Jayhawks and Silverswords are slated to tip off inside Lahaina Civic Center at 8 p.m. (CT) on ESPNU. Dave Pasch (play-by-play) and Bill Walton (analyst) will call the action.

TIP-OFF

• Kansas is participating in its seventh Maui Jim Maui Invitational and has a combined record of 15-6 in the event. The Jayhawks are 3-0 mark in campus round games and a 12-6 record in Maui.
• Kansas has won two Maui Invitationals in 1996 and 2015, its last appearance in the event.
• Kansas is facing Chaminade for the fourth time with all three previous meetings in the Maui Invitational. The Jayhawks are 3-0 versus the Silverswords.

KU IN THE MAUI INVITATIONAL

Kansas has a combined 15-6 record in this Maui Jim Maui Invitational (counting home games that are part of the tournament). KU is 12-6 in games played at the Lahaina Civic Center in Maui, Hawaii.

In KU’s 1988 NCAA National Championship season, the Jayhawks placed fourth in the event, going 1-2. Kansas won the 1996 Maui Invitational, defeating LSU, California and Virginia. Raef LaFrentz was named the MVP. In 2001, KU finished third in the event with a 2-1 record. Drew Gooden was a member of the all-tournament team and was the first Jayhawk on the Maui Invitational all-tourney list, which began in 2000.

Kansas will play either BYU or UCLA in the second round of the 2019 Maui Jim Maui Invitational. The Jayhawks are 3-1 all-time against BYU. UCLA holds a 10-8 series advantage versus Kansas.
