HAYS — The No. 3/5 Fort Hays State women’s basketball team returns to action Monday (Nov. 25) when the Tigers host the University of Saint Mary (Kan.) inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. First tip is set for 6 p.m. in the Monday night game.

Fort Hays State brings a 4-0 record into the contest, while the Spires are 1-7 so far this season. Monday’s matchup will be considered an exhibition contest for Saint Mary.

The Tigers and Spires have met three times in history, with Fort Hays State coming away victorious each time. FHSU is 2-0 against Saint Mary inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers ran away with a 100-34 victory in the most recent meeting six years ago (12/16/13).

The Spires are coming off a 1-1 week in KCAC play, including their first victory of the season. Saint Mary averages 50.9 points per contest while allowing opponents an average of 75.1 points each night. They are led by junior Danielle Cassady, who averages 12.0 points, 4.1 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.8 steals per night. Freshman Macy Walker grabs a team-best 6.4 rebounds per contest.

The Tigers have played stout defense so far this season, ranking fourth in the country in scoring defense by allowing just 47.8 points per contest. Their scoring margin of 25.8 points is 12th-best in Division II. Fort Hays State moved into the top five in both national polls after its 4-0 start to the season, now ranking fifth in the WBCA coaches poll and third in the D2SIDA media poll.

Belle Barbieri ranks second in the country in double-doubles after eclipsing 10 points and 10 rebounds in each of the last three games. The senior is averaging a team-high 12.8 points and leads the team and the MIAA with 12.5 rebounds per contest. Kacey Kennett ranks second in the conference and 19th in Division II with 3.8 steals per game.

Fort Hays State is 61-5 in November under Hobson, including 31 consecutive victories in the opening month of the season.

The Tigers have won their last 38 non-conference regular season games and 71 of their last 72. The streak at home is even longer, with the Tigers winning 54 straight non-conference regular season games inside the Coliseum.

The Tigers are 13-8 when playing on a Monday during Hobson’s tenure.

No. 2 Ohio State gained some ground on No. 1 LSU in The Associated Press college football poll and Oregon dropped out of the top 10 after being upset by Arizona State.

The Tigers remained No. 1 for the fifth straight week in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank, receiving 50 first-places votes. The Buckeyes got nine first-place votes, up from five last week. No. 3 Clemson received three first-place votes. No. 4 Georgia and No. 5 Alabama also held their spots.

Ohio State is coming off a 28-17 victory over Penn State that dropped the Nittany Lions three spots to No. 12.

Oregon dropped eight spots to No. 14 after losing 31-28 at Arizona State. That allowed Utah to move up a spot to No. 6 and Oklahoma to No. 7. Florida, Minnesota and Michigan round out the top 10.___

POLL POINTS

Alabama has now been ranked for 209 consecutive weeks, starting with the 2008 preseason poll, tying Florida (Sept. 9, 1990-Oct. 5, 2002) for the third-longest streak in poll history. Nebraska has the longest streak at 348 weeks (21 years, Oct. 12, 1981-Sept. 22, 2002) and Florida State is second with 211 weeks (12 years, Sept. 24, 1989-Nov. 11, 2001).

The Tide should tie Bobby Bowden’s Seminoles this season and surpass them in next year’s preseason poll. There are typically 16 polls in a season, counting preseason and final. At that rate, Alabama would pass the record Nebraska set under coach Tom Osborne in Week 5 of the 2029 season.

— No. 24 Navy jumped into the rankings, knocking out American Athletic Conference rival SMU.

— No. 25 Southern California finished its regular season by beating rival UCLA and jumping back into the rankings. The Trojans have had two previous one-week stays in the poll this season.

— Texas A&M fell out after a brief return to the AP Top 25. The Aggies lost for the fourth time, this time to Georgia. All of A&M’s losses have come against teams ranked in the current top 16. It gets no easier for the Aggies next week. They will face No. 1 LSU and become the first team in the history of the AP poll, which dates to 1936, to face a No. 1 three times in one season. Playing the No. 1 team twice in one season has happened 30 times previously, and that’s including seven teams that played one of those games in the postseason.

Texas A&M lost to No. 1 Clemson 24-10 in September and to No. 1 Alabama 47-28 in October.

MANHATTAN — A furious fourth quarter rally by Kansas State on Sunday afternoon fell short, as UT Arlington snapped K-State’s 10-game home winning streak over non-conference opponents with a 57-53 decision at Bramlage Coliseum.

“Disappointed with the outcome obviously,” said K-State head coach Jeff Mittie. “We struggled all day. Really did not play well until maybe the fourth. We played a little bit better in the fourth and made a little bit of a push in the fourth.”

K-State (3-1) entered the fourth quarter trailing by nine, 43-34, and had gained momentum by scoring six of the final eight points of the third quarter to close the gap. UT Arlington (4-0) was able to rebuild its lead to 14, 50-36, with 7:17 to play in the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats narrowed the game to three, 54-51, with 42 seconds to play with the assistance of an 15-4 run which was highlighted by seven points from Christianna Carr. The Wildcats pulled within three after two free throws from Angela Harris.

The Lady Mavericks received a clutch jumper from Terryn Milton with 12 seconds on the clock to give them a five-point lead, 56-51. Carr converted a driving layup after a timeout to bring K-State back to within three, 56-53. UT Arlington was able to close the game with a free throw by Claire Chastain with seven seconds to play.

In the first half, UT Arlington used a decisive 16-4 run in the second quarter to construct a 12-point lead at the half, 32-20. The 20 first half points by the Wildcats were the fewest since scoring 16 at West Virginia on January 26, 2019.

Kansas State was shorthanded on Sunday, as the Wildcats played without junior guard Rachel Ranke, redshirt sophomore guard Cymone Goodrich and sophomore guard Savannah Simmons due to injuries.

Despite the absences, the Wildcats had at least three players reach double figures for the fourth time this season, led by senior forward Peyton Williams. Williams carded her third double-double in as many games played for her this season with 16 points and 18 rebounds.

With her 18 rebounds, Williams moved into 14th on the K-State career rebounds list with 709 to her name. She is the 15th player in program history to haul in 700 or more career rebounds.

With her 16 points, the All-America candidate from Topeka, Kansas, moved into 28th on the K-State career scoring list with 1,163 points.

Joining Williams in double figures were Carr and Harris with 15 and 10 points, respectively. Carr was 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.

UT Arlington also had three players in double figures paced by Milton with 18 points. Marie Benson added 16 and Chastain tallied 14.

K-State shot a season-low 25.0 percent (17-of-68) from the field, while UT Arlington checked in at 38.3 percent (23-of-60). The Wildcats held a 53-33 advantage on the boards.

The Wildcats will leave the friendly confines of Bramlage Coliseum for the first time on November 29 and 30 for the 17th annual Junkanoo Jam in Bimini, Bahamas. Kansas State, Memphis, LSU and Michigan State make up the Bimini Division of the event.

K-State will face Memphis on Friday at 2 p.m. (CT), and will face either LSU or (15/16) Michigan State on Saturday at either 3:30 p.m. (CT), or 5:45 p.m. (CT).

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Navarro Junior College out of Corsicana, Texas came to Kansas as the #1 seed in the 2019 D1 National Volleyball Tournament as well as being Ranked #1 in the nation and proved it winning over the Kansas representative in the Tournament, the #3 seeded Seward County Saints in 5 sets 32-30, 25-19, 20-25, 27-25 and 19-17 in a nail biter late Saturday night at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Navarro finishes the season 31-0 and is the 1st team from Texas since Blinn College won it in 2014 and the Championship game was the first 5 set win since 2015,

Emily Witt was outstanding with 61 assists and Jordan Russell cranked out 27 kills for the Bulldogs who looked like they had it wrapped up in the 4th set before Seward came back to tie it at 2-2 with a 27-25 gut check moment by the Saints.  Seward County’s Yanlix Feliz had 34 kills to lead the match in that category.

Coach Andy Cavins on what the National Title means to him:

Cavins won a NAIA National Championship in 2017 at Linsey Wilson College in Columbia, Kentucky. Cavins replaces NJCAA Hall of Fame coach Ronda Shirley, who left Navarro in January after two seasons to become the head coach at NCAA Division I USC-Upstate in Spartanburg, SC.  Shirley is a former head coach for Hutchinson Community College before she left for Tyler, Texas and then Navarro.  Shirley was in attendance recruiting for USC-Upstate and watched nervously from the yellow seats high up in the Sports Arena proudly watching her former team win a National Championship

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Jalen Hurts passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more, and No. 8 Oklahoma defeated TCU 28-24 to clinch a spot in the Big 12 championship game. Hurts ran for 173 yards and passed for 145. Kennedy Brooks added 149 yards for the Sooners, who kept their College Football Playoff hopes alive. Oklahoma faces Oklahoma State next weekend before the league title game against Baylor.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — J.K. Dobbins rushed for 157 yards and two touchdowns as second-ranked Ohio State downed No. 9 Penn State, 28-17 to clinch the Big Ten East. The Buckeyes saw a 21-0 lead cut to 21-17 before Justin Fields threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Chris Olave (oh-LAH’-vay) in the fourth quarter. Chase Young returned from a two-game suspension and recorded three sacks, including a big stop on the Nittany Lions’ final drive.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — No. 1 LSU has clinched its first trip to the SEC championship game since 2011 with a 56-20 victory over reeling Arkansas. Joe Burrow passed for 327 yards and three touchdowns as the Tigers improved to 11-0. Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for a career-high 188 yards, including scoring runs of 89, 27 and 26 yards.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — George Pickens scored Georgia’s only touchdown and the fourth-ranked Bulldogs relied on their defense in a 19-13 win against No. 24 Texas A&M. The Aggies were held to just minus-1 yards rushing and 274 yards overall, one week after piling up 319 yards on the ground. Rodrigo Blankenship booted four field goals as Georgia stayed in line for a CFP berth.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Mac Jones passed for 275 yards and three touchdowns in little more than a half as fifth-ranked Alabama steamrolled over Western Carolina, 66-3. The Crimson Tide forced five turnovers, including Xavier McKinney’s 81-yard interception return for a touchdown. It was the Tide’s first game since losing quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (TOO’-ah tuhng-ah-vy-LOH’-ah) to a season-ending hip injury.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona State destroyed Oregon’s CFP hopes by intercepting two of Justin Herbert’s passes in the fourth quarter of the Sun Devils’ 31-28 triumph over the sixth-ranked Ducks. Freshman Jayden Daniels completed 22 of 32 passes for 408 yards and three touchdowns to help the Sun Devils end the Ducks’ nine-game winning streak. Arizona State hung on after Oregon scored three touchdowns in a 6:38 span in the wild final period.

The Shockers took the lead for good four minutes into the game on an Asbjorn Midtgaard dunk. Oral Roberts cut the lead to 56-53 on a Sam Kearns driving layup with just under six minutes to play but were outscored 10-6 the rest of the way.

Wichita State plays South Carolina on Tuesday. Oral Roberts matches up against Southwestern Christian at home on Monday.

Blake Lynch kicked two 32-yard field goals and a 43-yarder for Kansas State (7-4, 4-4 Big 12), which snapped a two-game losing streak.

Thompson’s touchdown passes were 14 yards to Phillip Brooks in the third quarter and 48 yards to Chabastin Taylor midway in the fourth quarter.

SaRodorick Thompson had a 5-yard touchdown run and Jett Duffey passed for 334 yards and two touchdowns for Texas Tech (4-7, 2-6) which fell short of bowl eligibility. Duffey’s touchdown passes were 21 yards to Erik Ezukanma and 58 yards to R.J. Turner. Trey Wolff kicked field goals of 44 and 27 yards for the Red Raiders.

Youngblood, a freshman who went into play leading the conference averaging 29.5 yards per kickoff return, had a 98-yarder for a touchdown against Texas on Nov. 9. Kansas State has returned three kickoffs for touchdowns this season.

THE TAKEAWAY

Kansas State: The Wildcats rebounded nicely following last week’s home loss against West Virginia after which some players said they took the Mountaineers lightly.

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders aren’t going to a bowl for the second straight season. That hasn’t happened since the 1990-92 seasons in the Southwest Conference under Spike Dykes.

AMES, Iowa — With a chance to finish off the surprisingly tough Jayhawks, Iowa State coach Matt Campbell put the game in sophomore quarterback Brock Purdy’s hands.

Purdy made Campbell look like a genius, closing the door on Kansas with a fourth-down touchdown pass with 1:09 left.

Purdy threw for 372 yards and four TDs — including the game-clinching one on fourth-and-goal from the 4 — and Iowa State rallied to beat Kansas 41-31 on Saturday and clinch its third straight winning season.

“Like I told our seniors, it was fitting that guts, toughness (and) heart was the way we were able to win,” Campbell said. “We didn’t play great. I’m not going to sugarcoat that in any way, shape or form.”

La’Michael Pettway had 96 yards receiving and two touchdowns for the Cyclones (7-4, 5-3 Big 12), who’ve now complied three consecutive winning years just twice in the modern era. Iowa State, under coach Earle Bruce, won eight games each in 1976, 1977 and 1978 before Bruce bolted for Ohio State.

But the Cyclones nearly blew it against the league’s last-place team.

Kansas (3-8, 1-7) scored two touchdowns in just 77 seconds late in the third quarter, the second coming after Purdy threw an interception, to jump ahead 24-21.

Purdy responded with a 24-yard TD pass to Breece Hall, and he ran for a five-yard touchdown with 5:10 left to put Iowa State back on top 34-31.

After stopping Kansas on fourth down at the Iowa State 37, the Cyclones could have either kicked the chip-shot field goal and made it a six-point game — with Kansas out of timeouts — or go for it all.

Campbell went for the kill, and Purdy scrambled away from danger until Shaw could get open for the score that sealed Iowa State’s fifth straight win over Kansas, a 24-point underdog entering play.

“They made one more play than we did, certainly at the end,” Kansas coach Les Miles said.

Carter Stanley threw for 328 yards and three TDs for Kansas, and Pooka Williams ran for 154 yards.

“Sick, frustrated,” Williams said of the vibe in the KU locker room. “But I feel like we have a chance…against every team we play.”

THE BIG PICTURE

Iowa State: The Cyclones’ defense, which has been really good for most of the season, had one of its worst games in years. Iowa State allowed 493 yards and nine third-down conversions. But the Cyclones had Purdy, who has blossomed into one of the nation’s best this season. “When this team has needed him the most, he’s been his best,” Campbell said.

Kansas: The Jayhawks also went for a huge gamble late, going for it on 4th-down-and-5 with 4:18 left down by three. It didn’t work, as Stanley threw a ball over the middle and behind the sticks that Anthony Johnson swatted away. Still, Kansas can take solace in knowing it threw the ultimate scare into a program whose ascent the Jayhawks will look to emulate in the years ahead. “I would rather have had the ball in our hands than in their hands. So the opportunity to go for it on fourth down when your quarterback is hot and the opportunity to keep that possession, keep the ball in our hands was just what I wanted to do,” Miles said of his decision to go for it.

PIVOTAL MOMENT

The Cyclones let Kansas drive 85 yards on its final possession of the first half, which was reminiscent of the 75-yard, 30-second TD drive Texas had to close out the second quarter last week. But Iowa State held KU to a field goal and then a three-and-out to open the third quarter, and Purdy’s 4-yard TD toss to Pettway less than three minutes later made it 21-9. That sequence got lost in the madness that ensued, but the Cyclones likely don’t win the game without such a response.

THE NUMBERS

Breece Hall ran for 97 yards. …Andrew Parchment caught eight passes for 86 yards, and Stephon Robinson had 75 yards receiving — including a 40-yard TD with 10:42 to go that put Kansas back on top 31-27. …Iowa State finished with 489 yards and scored on all four of its trips to the red zone. …The Cyclones were 10 of 16 on third down. …Liam Jones hit field goals of 36, 37 and 30 yards for Kansas. But the result might have been different in the Jayhawks could have punched it in instead on any of those drives.

They will now take on Axtell who outscored Hanover 26-12.  Saturday’s 8 Man-DII game will be played in Newton following the 8 Man D1 game.
