LIBERAL, Kan. – Trailing in the final minute of a game for the first time this season, the No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team answered the challenge and survived a major threat by No. 6 Seward County and defeated the Saints 62-61 on Wednesday at the Greenhouse.
Trailing 61-60, sophomore Kalani Purcell was fouled while battling for an offensive rebound with 3.9 seconds to play in the game. Purcell, who posted her 15th double-double of the season with 21 points and 16 rebounds, knocked down two free throws to give HCC a one-point lead. The Dragons then had to hold their breath as Seward County’s Rebekah Hatchard drove the length of the floor and got a good shot off that just missed the mark at the buzzer.
Hutchinson improves to 22-0 overall and 8-0 in the Jayhawk West. HCC extends its winning streak over the Saints to 11 and its Jayhawk West winning streak to 28.
Purcell entered the Blue Dragons’ career Top 10 scoring list on Wednesday. She now has 887 career points.
Purcell was one of three players to have a double-double for Hutchinson against Seward County.
Freshman Cynthia Petke posted her ninth double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Clemence LeFebvre had her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Sydney Benoit was also in double figures with 11 points.
Hutchinson shot 40.0 percent for the game (24 of 60), including 4 of 17 from 3-point range. HCC hit 10 of 13 free throws. The Blue Dragons doubled-up Seward County 52-26 in rebounding, but had to overcome 21 turnovers.
Davis finished with a team-high 19 points for the Saints (18-2, 6-1). Axelle Bernard had 13 points with three 3-pointers. Galindo had 12 points, knocking down three 3-pointers. Tamara Seda, Seward County’s leading scorer, was held to two points and eight rebounds on 1 of 7 shooting.
The Saints shot 35.4 percent (23 of 65). They hit 8 of 21 from 3-point range and 7 of 8 from the foul line. Seward committed only 10 turnovers.
The game had four lead changes and three ties in the first five minutes of the game. Tied at 11-all, HCC ran off seven unanswered points to lead 18-11 after LeFebvre hit 1 of 2 free throws with 9:55 to go in the half. The Dragon run ballooned to 18-2 and HCC led 29-13 after a Purcell layup with 4:54 to play in the half.
Trailing 31-17, a Galindo 3-pointer with 3:03 remaining started a run of seven straight scoring possessions by the Saints. Seward County scored 11 of the game’s next 15 points and pulled within 33-26 in the final minute of the half. Benoit gave Hutch a needed boost before halftime, knocking down a jumper with 19 seconds left and gave HCC a 35-26 halftime lead.
Seward County opened the second half on a 9-2 run to pull within 37-35 with 16:04 to play in the game. The Dragons immediately answered with an 11-2 run to go up 48-37 with 13:03 to play after a LeFebvre bucket. Alyx Bloom then drained a 3-pointer to give Hutch its largest lead of the second half at 53-41 with 11:29 to go.
HCC then missed six consecutive shots and turned the ball over five times in its 5 minute, 49 second scoring drought. The Saints tied the game at 53 on a Galindo three-point play and then led 56-53 on a Galindo 3-point goal with 5:57 remaining.
The lead changed hands six times in the final 6 minutes. HCC led 60-59 after a Purcell 15-foot jumper with 1:13 to play. HCC got a stop, but couldn’t convert on the offensive end. Seward’s Kyndal Davis hit two free throws with 30.1 seconds to play to give the Saints a 60-59 lead.
The Blue Dragons got two shots off in the final 11 seconds to try and take the lead. After a Bloom scoop shot came up short on the second attempt, Purcell grabbed the loose ball and was fouled with 3.9 seconds to play. The two subsequent free throws were her only attempts from the line in the game.
Hutchinson will close out its two-game road trip at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at Dodge City. The game will be played at the Dodge City Civic Center.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — One of only two remaining undefeated teams in NJCAA Women’s Division I basketball; the Hutchinson Blue Dragons are the new No. 1 team in Thursday’s latest women’s poll.

Now 20-0 after an 85-34 victory over Pratt on Wednesday, Hutchinson climbed to the top spot after previous No. 1 Chipola was defeated by Northwest Florida State College last Saturday.

Two other undefeated teams also fell last week – No. 4 Iowa Western lost to Division II Marshalltown and No. 22 Western Nebraska also lost. Hutchinson is the No. 1 team in the NJCAA poll for the first time in two seasons and for only the second time in program history.

The 2012-13 Blue Dragons spent five weeks at No. 1 before losing an overtime game at Garden City. That HCC team finished 36-1 and third in the NJCAA Tournament. For head coach John Ontjes, this will be his third time at No. 1 as a Blue Dragon, twice as a coach and once as a player.

In his freshman season playing for the Blue Dragon men in 1992, Hutchinson spent one week in the No. 1 spot in the men’s poll. Hutchinson made its 51st consecutive poll where it has been ranked in the Top 10 and 17th straight poll as a Top 3 team.

The Blue Dragons have appeared in 58 straight and 70 of the last 73 polls. Seward County is the only other team in this week’s NJCAA poll. Hutchinson travels to Seward County on Wednesday in the first of two regular-season meetings this season.

On Saturday, the Blue Dragons play host to Cloud County at 5:30 p.m. at the Sports Arena.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Clemence LeFebvre, Kalani Purcell and Cynthia Petke all posted double-doubles on Monday as the No. 2-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team completed its fourth consecutive undefeated non-conference season after a 90-64 victory over Utah State University-College of Eastern Utah at the CSN/Las Vegas Holiday Classic.
Now 14-0 to start the 2014-15 season, the Blue Dragons head into their Jayhawk West opener at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday against Dodge City at the Sports Arena. Hutchinson won its 63rd consecutive regular-season non-conference game.

Seven different times this season, two HCC players had double-doubles in the same game, but never three. Monday’s up-tempo, high-possession game provided plenty of opportunities to score and rebound.

LeFebvre’s double-double was the first of her collegiate career. She had a season-high 24 points on 10 of 14 shooting and a season-high-tying 10 rebounds. LeFebvre added four assists.

Petke had her sixth double-double of the season with 19 points and 14 rebounds. She was 8 of 18 shooting overall.

Purcell posted her sixth double-double in the last nine games, her ninth of the season and 27th of her career with 14 points and 13 rebounds to go with four assists. Purcell jumped up to No. 19 on the career scoring list with 751 points, up to fourth in career rebounds with 527 and into a tie for sixth in career blocked shots with 63.

In addition to the three double-doubles, sophomore Alyx Bloom had nine points and four rebounds and sophomore Sydney Benoit had eight points and six rebounds.

For the eighth time this season, the Blue Dragons shot 50 percent in a game, but had to overcome a season-high 27 turnovers. HCC connected on 37 of 74 shots overall (50.0 percent), going 2 of 9 from 3-point range and 14 of 24 from the free-throw line.

The Blue Dragons out-rebounded College of Eastern Utah 65-29. The 65 rebounds are a season high and the third-highest total for a game in program history. HCC had 24 offensive rebounds, which is the third time this season that the Blue Dragons reached 20 or more offensive boards.

Bryanna Adams hit 4 of 10 shots from 3-point range to finish with a team-high 22 points to lead College of Eastern Utah (13-4). Lejia Hadzialajic finished with nine points.

The Golden Eagles are the sixth Blue Dragon opponent to shoot less than 30 percent this season, hitting on only 20 of 72 shots (27.8 percent). CEU hit 8 of 38 from 3-point range and 16 of 24 from the foul line. The Eagles had 19 turnovers, but tied a Blue Dragon opponent high with 16 steals.

Unlike Sunday then it fell behind in the first half by as many as 10 points to Salt Lake, Hutchinson never trailed College of Eastern Utah, but were tied twice at 2-2 and 7-7. The Dragons took early command with a 12-3 run that was capped off by a Benoit 3-pointer with 12:10 to play that gave HCC a 19-10 lead.

An Adams 3-pointer pulled the Golden Eagles within 19-15, but seven unanswered points – five from LeFebvre – pushed the Dragon advantage back to 26-15 with 9:56 remaining.

The Blue Dragons shot 55.3 percent (21 of 38) in the opening half and held Eastern Utah to just under 40 percent (15 of 39) and HCC led 47-36 at halftime.

Hutchinson made life particularly hard on Eastern Utah in the second half in building leads as large as 34 points (80-46). HCC held Eastern Utah to two field goals over the first 17 minutes, 25 seconds of the half, going 13:57 without a field goal. The Golden Eagles missed 28 of their first 30 shots to start the second half. They were 14 of 21 from the foul line in the final 20 minutes,

When Adams hit a 3-pointer with 16:27 remaining in the second half, the Blue Dragon lead was 56-42. CEU’s next field goal didn’t come until the 2:35 mark on a Caroline Ficher inside hoop. By that time the Dragon lead mushroomed to 85-56.

The Blue Dragons cooled off to 44.4 percent (16 of 36), but had 15 turnovers in the second half alone.

GAME NOTES – The Blue Dragons are 85-8 in the John Ontjes era against non-Jayhawk Conference teams. … College of Eastern Utah is the 269th consecutive opponent that failed to shoot better than 50 percent against HCC. … Kalani Purcell tied Ariella McGhee for sixth place on the career blocked shots list with 63. … This was HCC’s seventh consecutive holiday tournament victory. NORTH LAS VEGAS,  Nev. – The No. 2-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team overcame its first halftime deficit of the season on Sunday to rally and defeat the No. 11 Salt Lake Bruins 55-46 in the first game of the College of Southern Nevada/Las Vegas Holiday Classic.
Powered by a strong second half from sophomore Kalani Purcell, the Blue Dragons rallied from 10 points down in the first half and a 23-19 halftime deficit. HCC shot only 6 of 27 in the first half (22.2 percent).

Hutchinson is now 13-0 overall and won its 62nd-straight regular-season non-conference game. The Blue Dragons will meet 13-3 College of Eastern Utah at Noon PST (2 p.m. Hutchinson time) on Monday in their final non-conference game.

Purcell finished the game with her ninth double-double of the season and 27th of her career, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds. She added seven assists and five steals, most of those coming in the second half. After missing the final 12 minutes, 45 seconds of the first half after picking up her second personal foul, Purcell ignited the Blue Dragons defensively and got her team in transition. Purcell had six points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals in a final half that saw HCC outscore Salt Lake 36-23.

Purcell jumped into 20th place on HCC’s career scoring chart with 737 points. She jumped into fifth place on HCC’s career rebounding list with 514 and she moved into second place on the career steals list with 173.

Sophomore guard Alyx Bloom hit four key free throws down the stretch and was Hutchinson’s leading scorer with 11 points. Sophomores Shakira Harding and Sydney Benoit and freshmen Cynthia Petke and Clemence LeFebvre all had eight points each.

HCC had its season-low offensive performance and tied a season-low in field-goal percentage at 32.5 percent (21 of 56). The Dragons hit just 2 of 11 from 3-point range and 11 of 14 from the free-throw line. Hutchinson out-rebounded Salt Lake 37-32 and turned the ball over 21 times.

Clarissa Sebedra had a game-high 21 points on 3 of 4 3-point goals to lead Salt Lake (12-4). No other Bruin scored in double figures. The Bruins were held to a season-low point total, 30 points under their 76 point scoring average. Salt Lake had 13 of its 21 turnovers in the second half.

Hutchinson hadn’t played in 15 days and Salt Lake hadn’t played in 10 days. Both offenses showed rust in the first half and when Purcell left the game with 12:45 remaining in the opening half, Salt Lake led 8-6.

A LeFebvre putback with 7:38 to play gave HCC an 11-8 lead. The Dragons went scoreless for the next 4 minutes, 21 seconds. Salt Lake cashed in with a 15-2 run and led 23-13 with 3:04 to play in the half after a Sebedra 3-point goal.

After a Blue Dragon 30-second timeout, the Dragons started to chisel away at their largest deficit of the season. After the final 3:21, HCC outscored Salt Lake 6-0, holding the Bruins to 0 of 4 shooting down the stretch. Two Harding field goals and two LeFebvre free throws with 40 seconds left helped HCC cut the Salt Lake lead to 23-19 at halftime.

The Blue Dragons continued to pressure Salt Lake defensively to open the second half. The Bruins were 0 of 2 with three turnovers on their first five second-half possessions. But Salt Lake continued to hold off HCC and led 33-28 with 13:26 to play in the second half after two Sebedra free throws.

Hutch started a 10-2 run with a Bloom transition hoop after a Salt Lake turnover. The Dragons grabbed their first lead since midway through the first half when Purcell had a steal and fed Harding with a transition bucket for a 36-35 lead and Petke closed the run with an inside bucket for a 38-35 lead  with 8:32 to play. After Cassidy Whitney scored to pull Salt Lake within one, Benoit drained a huge 3-pointer to up the Dragon lead to 41-37 with 8:00 to play.

The Dragons pushed their lead to seven at 47-40 after a Purcell bucket to complete a 28-17 run to erase the halftime deficit. Salt Lake made a 5-0 run to pull within 47-45 with 3:15 to play after a Shelby Richards layup. The Blue Dragons closed the game on an 8-1 run, holding the Bruins to 0 of 4 shooting with two turnovers on their final six possessions.

The Blue Dragons shot 51.7 percent in the second half (15 of 29) and held Salt Lake to 35.0 percent (7 of 20) with 13 turnovers.

LAS VEGAS, (NV) – The Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team makes its 10th Holiday Tournament appearance in program history beginning on Sunday with its first appearance in the Las Vegas Holiday Classic.
The No. 2-ranked Blue Dragons face stern tests in their final two non-conference games of the season. At 1 p.m. (PST) on Sunday, the Blue Dragons meet No. 11 Salt Lake Community College (12-3). At Noon (PST) on Monday, the Blue Dragons take on unranked Utah State University-College of Eastern Utah (12-3). The games will be played at the College of Southern Nevada’s Cheyenne Campus’ CSN Sports Center.

The HCC women make their return to the airwaves as Blue Dragon basketball flagship station  KHUT-FM (102.9) will air Sunday’s game vs. Salt Lake live beginning at 2:50 p.m. (Hutchinson time). Monday’s game will also be on KHUT, but on tape delay at 7 p.m. Both games will be videostreamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning 10 minutes before tipoff.

Hutchinson (12-0) will take the court on Sunday for the first time in 15 days. On Dec. 13, the Blue Dragons ran their home-court winning streak to 109 games and non-conference regular-season win streak to 61 games after a 93-51 victory over Northwest Tech in the KFSA Classic.

The Blue Dragons lead the nation in field-goal percentage at 50.3 percent.

No. 11 Salt Lake last played on Dec. 18 when the Bruins had a nine-game winning streak snapped after a 75-67 home loss to Snow College. Salt Lake owns quality victories over Central Arizona, defending Division II national champion Mesa and USU-College of Eastern Utah.

College of Eastern Utah has won two straight games. The Golden Eagles are third in the NJCAA in made 3-pointers per game (10.0) and 3-point attempts (33.5 percent).

+ Freshman guard Barbara Cousino averages 11.9 points. She averages a team-high 2.4 3-pointers per game shooting 37.0 percent from long range. Overall, Cousino shoots 40.0 percent overall and 82.8 percent from the foul line. Cousino averages 4.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game.

+ Sophomore guard Maddy Murphy averages 10.8 points per game on 34.8 percent shooting, 85.7 percent from the foul line. Murphy averages 3.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.0 steals per game.

+ Sophomore guard Jamie Smith is fourth in scoring at 10.7 points, averaging right at two 3-pointers per game and 30.6 percent from the 3-point line. Smith averages 5.1 rebounds and a team-high 4.6 assists per game.

+ The Golden Eagles are a minus-3.4 in rebounding margin. Eastern Utah averages 46.3 total and 18.1 offensive rebounds per game. They allow 49.7 total and 18.1 offensive rebounds per game. Freshman center Jessica Anderson is CEU’s leading rebounder at 6.8 rebounds per contest.

+ Eastern Utah is forcing 22.4 turnovers per game. The Golden Eagles give the ball up an average of 17.7 per game. ECU also averages 15.1 assists, 11.5 steals and 3.9 blocks per game. Anderson blocks 2.6 shots per contest.

Series Histories vs. Las Vegas Classic foes
The Las Vegas Classic matchups with Salt Lake and College of Eastern Utah will be the first meetings ever between the Blue Dragons and those schools.

In fact, of the 1,195 games played in Blue Dragon women’s basketball history, the Las Vegas Classic matchups will only be the second and third games against Region XVIII teams.

The only other meeting with a Region XVIII team came at the Palomar Holiday Classic in 2008 when Dixie State College defeated the Blue Dragons 78-74 in overtime.
