WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — An audit has found that the largest school districts in Kansas have received millions in funding not allowed by state law.

The Kansas State Department of Education has given more than $45 million to the districts in just the past five years to help bus students to school. State auditors estimate Wichita’s district alone will get nearly $3 million more than legally allowed.

The audit report released last week found the department is distributing transportation funds to districts using a method repealed by lawmakers in the 1970s. The method results in districts with the highest population densities receiving more aid.

The report recommends the department remove the unauthorized aid beginning in the 2018-19 school year.

Department officials say they began making the payments decades ago after a request from lawmakers.

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a robbery and released security camera image of a suspect.

On Tuesday, police responded to the Wheat State Credit Union in the 1400 Block of South Oliver in Wichita, according to a social media report.

This is one of several bank robberies in Wichita over the past few weeks.  Anyone with information on the suspect is asked to call 911.

SALINE COUNTY — A Kansas man was injured in an accident just before 6p.m. Monday in Saline County.

A 2012 Ford Focus driven by Glenn Deines, 67, Smolan, was westbound on the 2600 Block of West Water Well Road and hit a cow, according to Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander

The animal escaped from a nearby electric fence and wandered into the road. “The cow’s owner Michael Wimer had to put the animal down before removing it from the scene,” said Melander. Deines was not seriously injured.

Melander said that deer-related accidents are on the decline in Saline County but as the with dry conditions electric fences become less effective at containing livestock.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say a toddler is in critical condition after being pulled from a pond southeast of Wichita.

Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Lt. Lin Dehning said in a news release that the 21-month-old boy was found Monday in the pond on private property. Paramedics then rushed the boy to a hospital.

Air temperature at the time was in the low-50s, but the water temperature is not known. The pond is not visible from the road.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — An animatronic figure of Donald Trump has joined Disney’s Hall of Presidents in Florida.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that a robotic facsimile of the 45th president of the United States stood front and slightly off-center Monday for the soft reopening of the long-running Walt Disney World attraction.

The Trump figure moves his head during the traditional roll call of leaders, motions with his arms and gives a brief speech. A Disney spokeswoman says Trump recorded his Hall of Presidents script earlier this year. Every sitting president since Bill Clinton has had a speaking part.

The Hall of Presidents debuted at the Magic Kingdom in 1971 and gets an update with each change in leadership. After closing in January, the theater received an upgrade in its sound, light and projection packages.

Disney has not announced an official opening date.

WOODWARD COUNTY, OK — A Tuesday morning earthquake shook many areas of Kansas.

The quake at 5:26 a.m. was centered approximately 29 miles northeast of Mooreland, OK., and measured 4.0, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Mooreland is located 120 miles south of Dodge City.

There are no reports of damage or injury from Tuesday morning’s quake.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Facebook post alluding to the use of a Wichita mosque as a shooting range is raising concern in the local Muslim community.

Wichita police spokesman Charley Davidson said Monday they are investigating and extra patrols are occurring. Police have also notified the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

A picture of the Wichita Islamic Society building was posted Thursday as a suggestion in response to a Facebook question seeking a good gun range to learn to shoot.

Hussam Madi told KWCH-TV that regardless of the poster’s intent, it should be investigated. He says it’s nothing to joke about and he hopes others will think before posting threatening things.

The Kansas chapter of the Council of American-Islamic Relations has called for the posting to be investigated as a possible hate crime.

Topeka, KS- A Hoffman’s Two-toed Sloth born at the Topeka Zoo on Saturday is clinging to mom and doing everything a baby sloth should do. When new mom Jacque showed her new baby to the Zoo’s Animal Care Staff, the baby sloth was alert and clinging to mom in a good nursing position. Both mom and baby appear to be bright and alert and doing great. The baby was named Foley by the primary Zoo Keeper that works in the Zoo’s Tropical Rain Forest.

There are currently four sloths living in the Zoo’s Tropical Rain Forest. They include mother Jacque (age 27), father Mocha (age 19), Newt (age 1) and the newborn Foley. This is the 15th offspring of Jackie’s and the fourth of Mocha’s.

The Topeka Zoo has a long successful history with sloth reproduction largely due to the rain forest environment the sloths live in at the zoo. Zoo staff monitored the pregnancy closely but had high confidence that mom knew exactly what to do.

Native to a small area of Central and South America, Hoffman’s Two-toed Sloths are threatened by deforestation issues. Sloths are known for their slow moving, solitary arboreal behavior. Sloths do everything upside down – including eating, sleeping, mating and even giving birth.
