Liberty Bell 7 headed to KC

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Cosmosphere Innovation Space in Kansas City and BluHawk today announced that the Mercury spacecraft Liberty Bell 7 will be the early centerpiece of a new exhibition by Cosmosphere Innovation Space at BluHawk in Overland Park. “We have an exceptional plan that meets the needs of Cosmosphere, BluHawk and the public, which is eager to see tremendous exhibits like Liberty Bell 7 as soon as possible,” Jim Remar, President/CEO of the Cosmosphere, said. “Opening a temporary Cosmosphere location in early 2019 is a big win for all parties as we continue forward with the plans for our satellite location at BluHawk.”

The Cosmosphere Innovation Space will leverage the critical mass of crowds that BluHawk will generate in its first phase, including visitors to BluHawk Sports Park scheduled to break ground in 2019 and open the following year. Not only did the Cosmosphere assist with the location and recovery of Liberty Bell 7, but its SpaceWorks division restored and preserved the spacecraft—one of many NASA restoration projects in which SpaceWorks has been involved.

This exhibit will give visitors to BluHawk a chance to better understand history and the role Mercury missions and astronauts like Gus Grissom played in helping the United States win the Space Race. “We are very pleased that Overland Park residents and visitors will have an early look at this historic exhibit and others. Providing unique opportunities to shop, dine and experience is the foundation upon which BluHawk is built,” Doug Price, President of Price Brothers, said. “This new exhibition is a great venue for Cosmosphere to test new ideas while we are developing extensive plans for its new satellite location.”

A NASA Team II Mission Control exhibit will follow Liberty Bell 7 in the second quarter of 2019 and other exhibits will rotate on a regular basis.

Trinity Catholic cross country teams headed to state

BELLEVILLE, Kan. — The Trinity Catholic cross country teams will go to the state meet after earning third place finishes in both the boys and girls standings at the class 2A regional at the Belleville Country Club.

It was a close team race. The top three individual runners could not get their teams into the top three.

Trinity’s boys finished third with a score of 128. Michael Maldonado earned an eighth place finish on a hilly course in a time of 18:03. Zach Biel also made it into the top 15 with an 11th place finish in 18:23

The girls team score was also high, but the 85 points was still low enough for a trip to state. Diane Fink led the way for the Celtics with an eighth place finish in a time of 21:45.  Sierra Garcia also had a great day finishing in 10th with a time of 21:54.

The 2A state meet is Saturday at Wamego.

Hutchinson sends 2 runners to state

MANHATTAN, Kan. — On one of the toughest cross county courses in Kansas — Manhattan’s Warner Park — the Hutchinson Salthawks got two runners through to the state meet.

For the girls, Stella Foster finished in seventh place with a nice time of 20 minutes, 20 seconds on a very demanding course. As a team, the Salthawks finished in eighth.

The Hutchinson boys did not have enough runners to make it in the final team standings. Noah Cole will go to state for the Hawks as he finished in eighth place in a time of 16:50. The 6A state meet is next Saturday at Rim Rock Farms in Lawrence.

Volunteers still needed for NJCAA volleyball tournament

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Visit Hutch still has a few spots open for volunteer work at this year’s NJCAA National Volleyball Tournament at the Sports Arena starting Nov. 15.

The tournament is looking for door monitors for both Thursday sessions.

To volunteer, contact Visit Hutch at 620-662-3391.

Hutchinson’s Prairie Ridge Park to host 4A cross country regional

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For the ninth time since it was built six years ago, Hutchinson’s Westar Prairie Ridge Park will host a postseason cross country event. Buhler will host the class 4A regional this Saturday at the course located on Lucille Drive across the street from Prairie Hills Middle School.

This is the second time the course has hosted a high school regional event. The course has also hosted two NJCAA Region VI championships and numerous league meets since the course was built in 2012.

A couple of notes if you are planning to attend:

No parking will be allowed along Lucille Drive. Parking will be available at the middle school.

Those watching the event on Saturday should be aware that this is a natural prairie area and involves tall grass and animal burrows. Fans need to be aware when walking to different parts of the course.

Other area schools will also be running Saturday. Here is the schedule. Note that some of these locations are hosting multiple classes — such as Lake Afton and Cessna Activity Center — so parking may be scarce or the walk may be a long one. Be prepared.

Regional Cross Country:

6A Hutchinson @ Manhattan at Warner Park 10 a.m.

4A Buhler and Nickerson @ Buhler at Prairie Ridge Park 10 a.m.

3A Haven at Lake Afton 10:55 a.m.

2A Trinity @ Bellville at Bellville Country Club 10:30 a.m.

1A Central Christian, Pretty Prairie and Fairfield @ Wichita at Cessna Activity Center 11:15 a.m.

Strong Towns’ President Charles Marohn to speak in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In an effort to spark a new dialogue about how Hutchinson and Reno County should grow and what it will take to sustain that growth, the public is invited to a “Curbside Chat” on Oct. 23 with Strong Towns’ President Charles Marohn.

The city of Hutchinson, Hutchinson-Reno County Chamber of Commerce, Hutch Rec, Young Professionals of Reno County and Hutchinson Community Foundation are hosting the show, which is from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Historic Fox Theatre.

Wendy Skellenger with the Hutchinson Community Foundation highlights what Marohn will discuss and explains how travel has affected our communities:

Skellenger says Marohn won’t provide answers to the problems facing cities, but will share insight on how communities may improve:

The final 20 minutes of the presentation will include a public question-and-answer session with Marohn. Strong Towns is a media organization leading a national conversation about a model of development aimed at helping cities, towns and neighborhoods become financially strong and resilient. It is challenging Americans to fundamentally rethink how their cities are built.
