HILLSBORO, Kan. — The Trinity Catholic and Nickerson High tennis teams were in action Thursday at Hillsboro.
Trinity finished the meet in fourth place while Nickerson was sixth. Caeli Clennan finished second in number 1 doubles while Maggie Vinduska picked up the lone win for the Celtics with a first in number 2 singles. The doubles team of Lexi Flores and Hannah Khokhar ended up with a fifth in number 1 doubles.
The Nickerson doubles team of Taylene Rose and Alyssa Rosenberg finished in fourth place in number 2 doubles.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Salthawk volleyball team picked up a pair of nice wins last night on its home court.
In the first match, the Hawks defeated Great Bend 27-17 and 25-12. Hutch capped off the evening with a three-set win over Goddard by scores of 20-25, 25-18 and 25-19.
The junior varsity also won out over the Panthers and Lions, winning both in straight sets.
The Hawks return to action Tuesday at Derby to take on the Panthers and Railers.
MCPHERSON, Kan. — Running with limited numbers, the Hutchinson, Buhler and Nickerson cross country teams participated in the McPherson Invitational at the Rolling Meadows Golf Course. Most of the varsity teams will be running at Rim Rock farms in Lawrence on Saturday. None of the three area teams had enough runners to score in the team standings.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Volleyball fans will get a taste of what the National Tournament may provide this weekend when the Allen Samuels Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic gets underway Friday afternoon in the Sports Arena.

Twelve teams are expected to be on hand, most of them are nationally ranked. Head Coach Patrick Hall says it’s a chance to play some very good talent and hopefully keep moving forward from last week’s effort:
The Dragons will play Frank Phillips Friday at 1 p.m. followed by a match against Tyler at 5 p.m., then take on Mineral Area Saturday at 11 a.m. and Northeast Community College at 3 p.m.
Those coming to the tournament should be aware that parking will be in the east lot only and entry will be through the east doors only.
HAVEN, Kan. — Watco Transportation says trains are running again on the K and O rail line running through Reno County.
The line has been closed since last Saturday after an eastbound train struck a semi near Haven. The crash caused all three locomotives and the first 15 cars of the train to leave the tracks. Ten of the cars ended up on their sides. The derailment also damaged 900 feet of track.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 School District is always looking for mentors for its students.
Grandparents are invited to join Communities That Care for coffee and dessert Thursday, Sept. 27, at 6:30 p.m. in the Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy at 800 15th Circle. The Academy is on the northwest side of Hutchinson High School and may be accessed from either East 14th or 15th from Plum Street.
CTC screens and trains all volunteers for USD 308 and places volunteers in helpful roles. During the evening, grandparents and other interested individuals will learn how they can make an impact on students in the community.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Visit Hutch, host of the 2018 NJCAA Division I Volleyball Championship, announced today that online tickets are on sale for the November Championship. The dates are Nov. 15-17, 2018, at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
This is the second year Hutchinson will host the 16-team, double-elimination Volleyball Championship. The winners of the 14 Division I Volleyball districts and two At-Large teams will compete for the National Championship. Thursday and Friday matches will be played on two courts at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Saturday’s matches will be played on a single court.
All-session passes for the three-day event are available for $40 and allow entrance to every match. Single-day tickets can be purchased for $17. Student and senior discounts are also available. All tickets can be purchased online at www.njcaavb1.com.
“We can’t thank the community enough for their support and the excellent hospitality they showed the teams during last year’s Championship! All of the teams had a fantastic time while they were in Hutchinson, and we are excited to welcome them again in November,” Holly Leiker, Championship Director and National Sports and Destination Sales Manager for Visit Hutch, said.
Hutchinson was awarded a three-year contract for the NJCAA DI Volleyball Championship by the NJCAA Board of Directors in April 2016. Visit Hutch will continue to host the Championship through November 2019.

EL DORADO, KAN. — The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team handed the Butler Grizzlies their first Jayhawk West loss of the season Wednesday with a 3-0 win at the Power Plant.

The Blue Dragons rallied to win the final three points of the opening set and defeat Butler 25-23, 25-14, 25-22.
Hutchinson improves to 6-5 overall and 4-2 in the Jayhawk West. Butler falls to 10-6 and 4-1 in league play. The Blue Dragons will play Frank Phillips, Tyler, Mineral Area and Northeastern Junior College this weekend at the Allen Samuels/Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic at the Sports Arena.
Sophomore right-side Elena Takova led the Blue Dragons with eight kills and hit .250 on 20 attacks. Freshman Tara Davis was next with five kills and two block assists.
The Blue Dragons won the opening set despite seven service errors and 18 overall errors in the opening set against the Grizzles.
Sophomore setter Cassidy Crites finished the game with 20 set assists. Freshman Ebony Sapien had five assists.
Sophomore Claira Creach had 10 digs and a pair of service aces. Raychel Reed had nine digs.
Delilah Vigil had three block assists and Chloe Partridge had two block assists.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After Dodge City scored the game-tying goal in the 55th minute on Wednesday, the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team responded as head coach Sammy Lane hoped it would.

For more than 70 minutes the Blue Dragons weren’t able to create any consistent scoring chances against the Conquistadors. That all changed when freshman Addi White delivered.
White’s goal in the 77th minute proved to be the game-winner as Hutchinson remained unbeaten with a 3-1 victory over Dodge City on Wednesday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.
The Blue Dragons improve to 6-0-1 overall (4-0-1, 13 points in the Jayhawk West). The victory also moved Blue Dragon head coach Sammy Lane within one victory of 200 for his Blue Dragon career.
With a gusty south wind of 15 to 20 mph also playing into the outcome Wednesday, the Blue Dragons played with the wind in the first half.
Hutch was only able to come away with one goal in the first 45 minutes. Freshman Ashley Venegas took a Naomi Waithira pass and used her speed to pull away from Dodge defenders, cross over to her left foot and finish in the lower right corner for her fifth goal of the season for a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.
Hutch out-shot Dodge City 12-0 in the first half, but led only 1-0 at intermission.
Dodge City was able to tie the game when the Conquistadors hit a corner from the left side. The Conqs were unable to get an initial shot and the Dragons were unable to clear and Liliana Vasquez hammered a high shot into the back of the net to tie the score at 1-all with 39:36 to play in the second half.
Playing no less than eight people back, Dodge City continued to knock down almost every Dragon offensive run. That all changed in the 77th minute when Waithira filtered a pass through to White, who was able to beat Dodge goalkeeper Alexis McKinnon for the go-ahead goal with 13:49 to play. The goal was White’s fourth of the season.
The Dragons scored an insurance goal with less than 5 minutes remaining when Kaitlyn Sabala took a White pass and softly chipped her shot over McKinnon’s head for a 3-1 lead. White and Cameron Rodriguez were both credited with assists.
Hutchinson outshot Dodge City 18-3 overall.
Blue Dragon keeper Taylor Camp earned her fifth win of the season to improve to 5-0-1.
Hutchinson travels to Pratt for a 3 p.m. Jayhawk West game on Saturday.
