Despite misconceptions, sales tax not higher at State Fair

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair’s funding for capital improvements may be at risk because of fairgoer misconceptions about the new Kansas State Fair sales tax law.

“Commercial exhibitors are telling us that fairgoers think state sales tax is higher at the Kansas State Fair,” Bob Moeder, Interim General Manager, said. “We want to make sure our visitors understand that Kansas sales tax is consistent everywhere in the state, but when they buy and take delivery of goods at the fair, a portion of the state sales tax collected returns to the fair for greatly-needed improvements to our facilities.”

Exhibitors and vendors are provided a special tax number to use for all goods and services delivered during the event. Fiscal 2017 figures show returning the sales tax generated on the Kansas State Fairgrounds during the fair would produce just over $400,000. About 5 percent of the 6.5 percent state tax would go into the State Fair Capital Improvements Fund.

Moeder said, “The more people shop during the fair, the more we can accomplish to improve the facilities not only for the 10 days of the Kansas State Fair, but also for the hundreds of events held on the grounds throughout the year.”

USD 308 Board holds first on-site meeting Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 School Board will venture away from its regular meeting place to the various schools during the first meeting of the month. That starts Monday when the School Board meets at McCandless Elementary at 6 p.m.

The meetings are being held at the various district schools as the Continuous Improvement Report is presented to the board. The schools will have the option of taking board members on school tours before the meeting.

Also Monday, the board will take action on Head Start agreements with Nickerson USD 309 and Buhler USD 313 and give approval to dispose of surplus property.

The Hutchinson USD 308 School Board meeting is at 6 p.m. at McCandless Elementary School.

KDHE files civil action against Western Acres owner

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is taking civil action against the owner of the Western Acres Mobile Home Park near Yaggy for failure to correct water issues.

The park has been under a boil water advisory since Aug. 8. No action has been taken by the park’s owner, Justin Whitt.

The petition was originally filed in May requesting action be taken by Whitt to deal with the drinking water at the park. The civil action can allow the Secretary of the KDHE to levy stiff penalties ranging from $1,000 to as much as $10,000 for failure to comply with orders in the petition, or for violations.

On Aug. 8, the park was placed under a boil water advisory because Whitt failed to provide water test samples to the KDHE, which is required twice per month. It’s the second time the park has been placed under a boil water advisory this year.

The KDHE could not say exactly what action was being taken by the state to help fix the problem and only said civil action is being taken against Whitt.

106th Kansas State Fair underway

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 106th Kansas State Fair is underway. Under cloudy, but mostly dry conditions, the fair kicked off at Gottschalk Park with the usual opening ceremonies.

As in the past, Richard Shank was the emcee for the event and gave a brief history of how the fair got its start:

Hutch High golfers compete in Dodge City

DODGE CITY, Kan. — The HHS golf team finished in 8th place in a 12-team field at the Dodge City Invitational at a tough Mariah Hills Gold Club. Meredith Kinney and Reaghan Martin led the way, finishing 10th and 11th. Both carded a 97.

Rylie Cannon finished 46 and Lexi Williams ended up 48th, both shot 127 on the day. Carter McFadden was 60th with a 141 and Evann Deal finished with a 164 for 67th place.

Grape stomping back again at the Kansas State Fair

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair will once again host the 13th annual Kansas Grape Stomp on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 3:00 p.m. on the Lake Talbott Stage.

Visitors will be able to watch state FFA officers, 4-H council leaders and others stomp grapes to salute the Kansas grape and wine industry. Robin Blume, Education and Events Coordinator for the Kansas Department of Agriculture, gives a rundown of the popular event:

Blume says the wine industry continues to grow in Kansas. As of August 2018, there were 47 farm wineries in Kansas:

The wine industry in Kansas contributes nearly $51 million to the state’s economy and employs more than 220 Kansans.

Grumman fly-in coming to Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After a very successful fly-in at the Hutchinson Airport this spring, another such event is coming to Hutchinson later this month.

The International Grumman Pilots Association is bringing its annual convention to Hutchinson Sept. 24-27.

At least 50 aircraft and nearly 100 people are expected for the four-day event. Pilots are expected to fly in or attend from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Germany.

The public is welcome throughout the week to view the aircraft that will be parked near Wells Aircraft.

Mall offering dry parking space for livestock participants during fair

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Vendors and those showing livestock and other exhibits have dealt with wet grounds and rain as the State Fair approaches. The Hutchinson Mall is helping out with that situation.

The mall is keeping the south parking lot available for all livestock trailers. Those showing animals have been notified about the changes. The mall parking replaces the parking on the far end of the east parking lot.

Since the ground will still be quite saturated, fairgoers will also be able to park at the mall and be shuttled in by bus. The service will run throughout the week. Fair parking lots will be open as usual, but the Mall is offering an alternative option.

Motorists are reminded that the traffic signals along Main at 20th and 23rd avenues will be activated and traffic will be closed off along Plum between 17th and 23rd.

Please remember that many areas around the fairgrounds have very limited or no parking.

State Fair ready for 10-day run

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 106th “great Kansas get-together” is upon us. The Kansas State Fair begins its 10-day run Friday in Hutchinson.

It has been a good run up to the start of the fair with high ticket sales and very good turnout by vendors and exhibitors.

Activities get underway at 9 a.m. with various performances. The opening ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. in Gottschalk Park.

The free entertainment in Gottschalk Park this year will be the Timberworks Lumberjack show. Of course, there will be lots of entertainment at the Lake Talbott Stage and hypnotist Ron Diamond is back again this year.

The grandstand entertainment for the first night of the fair is KC and the Sunshine Band starting at 7:30 with the evening capped off by the LaserForce Light Show at 9:30.
