GOODLAND, Kan. — Megan Maslak had two goals and Brailey Moeder added a goal and an assist to lead the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team to a dominating 7-0 Jayhawk West victory on Wednesday.

The road win is the first for Hutchinson this season, which improves to 3-0 (1-0 Jayhawk West) heading into Saturday’s Jayhawk West home showdown with Barton.

The Blue Dragons dominated possession from the outset, outshooting Northwest Tech 20-1 on a slow field. Maslak, who now has a team-high seven goals, scored in each half to lead the Blue Dragons.

Moeder scored Hutch’s first goal in the 13th minute. She now has four goals, including a pair of game-winning goals. Hailey Burke, Cameron Rodriguez, Sydney Blackwell and Alix Miller also scored goals for Hutchinson. Jenna Boese and Naomi Waithira had the only other assists.

Freshman goalkeeper Taylor Camp (2-0) worked her second-straight shutout with one save.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team hit better than .300 in a dominant first set over No. 11 Seward County on Wednesday Night at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons wound up hitting just .109 the rest of the way and the first meeting of the season between the reigning Region VI champion Dragons and Jayhawk West champion Saints went to Seward County in four sets.

The Blue Dragons, who fell out of the NJCAA rankings earlier on Wednesday, fell 25-12, 19-25, 16-25, 14-25 to fall to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the Jayhawk West. Seward County improves to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the West. Hutchinson plays next on Monday against Dodge City at 6:30 p.m. in the Sports Arena.

In contrast, Seward County hit .030 in the first set, but cranked things up in sets 2, 3 and 4 with .339 hitting.

Sophomore Elena Takova had nine kills on 21 swings (.190 attack percent) to lead the Blue Dragons, who finished the match hitting .109 to Seward’s .268.

Freshman Eden Hiebert finished with seven kills on .121 hitting with eight digs and two block assists. Freshman Tara Davis added a season-high six kills, hitting .500, with a service ace and four block assists. Freshman Lauren Willson came off the bench to provide a spark with five kills on .238 hitting.

Sophomore setter Payton Gawith had her first career double-double with 12 assists and a career-best 11 digs. Sophomore Cassidy Crites added 11 assists and five digs.

Sophomore libero Raychel Reed had a team-high 19 digs.

The Blue Dragons couldn’t slow down the three-pronged attack of Giovanna Tapigliani, Luz Sierra and Djuly Schmorantz. Those three players combined for 47 of Seward County’s 57 total kills.

The Blue Dragons were out-blocked 5-4.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College freshman cross country runner Andrew Kibet’s first race as a Blue Dragon was a memorable one.

Kibet won the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic last Friday at Fun Valley and that performance earned the Blue Dragon Freshman United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National NJCAA Division I Runner of the Week honors.

Kibet became the first Hutch men’s cross country individual champion in two years in winning the Masterson Twilight Classic. That performance powered the Blue Dragons to their first team championship since 2016.

After a tight race for the first 3 1/2 miles, Kibet took charge in the last half mile, winning by a margin of 6.10 seconds with a time of 19:32.70.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Sophomore Raychel Reed was named the Jayhawk West Defensive Player of the Week for her performance against Barton last Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

The sophomore libero from Aurora, Colorado, had 21 digs against the Cougars in a three-set sweep (25-18, 25-17, 25-12).

Reed had her second 20-dig game of the season and 10th of her career in the sweep. Reed was perfect on 12 service receptions. Reed added three set assists in the victory.

This is Reed’s first conference player of the week honor of her career.

PRATT, Kan. — Despite all of the weather-related problems in Pratt, the Central Christian volleyball team made it to Skyline High School and took a pair of matches Tuesday.

In the first match, the Cougars defeated Burrton 27-25 and 25-13.

In the second match, the Cougars were tested by Skyline in the first two sets before pulling away for a 25-13, 28-30, 25-11 match win.

The Cougars travel to Goessel for the Goessel Invitational on Saturday.

MARION, Kan. — The Trinity Catholic volleyball team picked up two wins on the road last night in Marion.

The Celtics downed Marion 2-0, then took three sets to defeat Sedgwick.

The Celtics return to action on Saturday in Haven.

HAYSVILLE, Kan. — The Hutch High volleyball team got a pair of wins Tuesday night in Haysville.

The Salthawks defeated Campus 25-14 and 25-17, then followed that up with a 25-16, 23-25, 25-17 match win over Maize.

The Salthawks return to the court Sept. 11 for two matches at Maize.

WICHITA, Kan. — The Hutch High soccer team picked up its first win of the season Tuesday by defeating Wichita Home School 3-2 at the Wichita South Titan Classic.

Eric Mendoza and Mondell Toney both had goals and an assist in the match. Zeke Martinez scored the other goal. Wyatt Johnson also had an assist. Francisco Villianueva had four saves in goal.

Now 1-2-1 on the season, the Salthawks will play their final match in the Titan Classic this Saturday.
