Bogey’s expanding to South Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A very popular local fast food restaurant is adding another location to the area.

Bogey’s announced it will build a new store in South Hutchinson. The new location will be at 400 N. Main, across the street from the overstock store.

Bogey’s Jr. will be a drive-thru and carry-out only location. The menu will not feature everything Bogey’s has at the Plum location, but it will have a full menu of burgers, fries, drinks and shakes.

Tyler Davis says he hopes to have the new store open by November.

Officials keeping an eye on area rivers

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — There is a lot of water in Rice County, but for right now, things are looking good in Hutchinson and Reno County.

Heavy rains have pushed water over some roads to the north, but Adam Weisharr with Reno County Emergency Management says, for now, they are simply waiting to see what happens with Cow Creek and the Big and Little Arkansas rivers. Cow Creek in Rice County is expected to rise near flood stage later tomorrow. Reno County remains under a flash flood watch with more rain in the forecast.

At last check, all three tributaries were running well below flood stage, although the rivers have been running a little quicker over the past week. The forecast calls for more rain over the next several days.

Council keeps rental program but insists more must be done

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council gave approval to keep the Rental Registration and Inspection program during Tuesday’s agenda session. But it won’t come without some major changes to the program.

The program, which has always been unpopular with landlords, was the topic of much discussion by the Housing Commission recently. The commission originally stated last month that it didn’t want the program to continue. However, the commission did a sudden turn-about last week and recommended that the program continue. Obviously there were many comments on both sides of the program.

Landlord Fran Weber was against keeping the program in place, saying that the program is not fair to them because tenants can retaliate against them if they are evicted:

 

Kelly-Anne Lanham, who is on the housing commission and a realtor, was much in favor of keeping the program in place and said more needs to be done to help both landlords and tenants keep property in compliance:

 

Lanham gave a few examples of what should be done to help the rental situation in Hutchinson:

 

Councilwoman Jade Piros de Carvalho originally voted to do away with the program, then rescinded the motion. After more discussion, the council voted to keep the program in place while waiving fees to landlords. Council members also insisted that the Housing Commission come up with a better plan than is currently in place. Piros de Carvalho also had this to say to a group of landlords:

 

In the end, the council decided by a vote of 5-0 to keep the program in place.

HutchCC volleyball sweeps Pratt

PRATT, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team struggled for two sets before finally finishing off a Jayhawk West road sweep on Monday night at Pratt.

No. 17 Hutchinson didn’t have a great offensive night, but had enough to defeat Pratt 3-0 (25-23, 28-26, 25-12) at the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons even their season record at 3-3 and are 2-0 in the Jayhawk West heading into Wednesday’s showdown with No. 7 Seward County at the Sports Arena. Pratt falls to 3-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

The Dragons allowed 16 points in the first two sets on errors, but dominated the third set.

Freshman Eden Hiebert nearly had her first career double-double with nine kills and a career-best 18 digs. Hiebert added one solo block and two block assists in the match.

Freshman Lauren Willson played in two sets and had a season-high seven kills on a team-high .375 hitting off the bench. Hydeah Hinesman also came off the bench to add a pair of kills and added one solo block and four assist blocks.

Elena Takova and Lexi Hogan had five kills each.

Sophomore setter Cassidy Crites had her third double-double of the season with 13 assists and 11 digs. Payton Gawith had 11 assists and Eboni Sapien had six assists in one set played.

Sophomore Libero Raychel Reed had 18 digs while freshman Baylee Beck had 10 digs.

A big early season match up for the Dragons comes Wednesday as they host Seward Community College at 6:30 at the Sports Arena.

The Rainbow Lion project finished at 2nd and Main

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After more than a year of planning and effort from a very talented client of TECH, a ceremony was held to dedicate a large mural that adorns the corner of 2nd and Main.

Lowen Corporation completed the install of a rainbow colored lion on the southwest corner of the building. While many were in awe of the vibrant colors and the “life” that the lion was starting to bring to the corner, many had questions about the project — who was behind it, why was it going up, were there more coming?

In early 2018, Bob and Ann Bush, owners of City Beverage, approached TECH about their vision for a community art project they had been talking about for a couple of years. Bob Bush comments on how it got its start:

 

 

For Ann Bush, the completion of the project highlights their love of art and support for TECH:

 

The painting of The Rainbow Lion was created by Jerimiah Tolbert and caught the eye of the Bush’s right away. After a lot of work and great cooperation between the parties involved, the mural went up over a three-day period.

The project was privately funded by the Bush family, who has provided the funds for maintenance on the mural for the next five years.

Trinity tennis 2nd at Sterling

STERLING, Kan. — Trinity picked up a first place and three seconds as they finished second out of four teams at Sterling Thursday.

Caeli Clennan in number one singles; Noelle Graham and Gracie Diaz in number one doubles and Hannah Khrokhar and Lexi Lores in number two doubles all finished second.

Jamie Enslinger scored the win for the Celtics in number two singles.

The Celtic netters return to action Thursday with a meet at Smoky Valley.

Trinity and Central Christian both have tough season-opening opponents

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two Hutchinson football teams have tough games to open the high school football season.

Trinity Catholic opens tonight on the road against Marion. Head Coach Jordan Bell hopes that his team’s experience can help defeat a team that starts the season just outside the state rankings:

Central Christian volleyball comes up short against Marion

MARION, Kan. — The Central Christian volleyball team lost in five sets to Marion Thursday night.

CCS got off to a fast start by winning the first two sets before dropping the last three. The Cougars lost the fifth set 25-23.

The Cougars return to action Tuesday with a double duel at Pratt against Skyline High School and Burrton.

HHS soccer loses at Andover

ANDOVER, Kan. — The Hutch High Soccer team is still without a win on the young season after dropping a match in Andover Thursday night.

The Salthawks ended up on the short end of a 4-1 score.

Hutch is now 0-1-1 on the season and returns to action Monday in the first round of the Wichita South Titan Classic.
