Fishing looks good for area lakes this summer

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Despite a lack of rain, area lakes are not looking too bad. The latest fishing forecast for the year is looking pretty good at the two area lakes visited most by central Kansas residents.

According to officials at Kanopolis State Park, this summer’s fishing season should be good. The park says there have been some changes in limits for walleye and saugeye, with length limits increased from 15 to 18 inches.

Other than that, all types of fishing should be good throughout the season. At Cheney — the news is the same — as fishing should be pretty solid according to Andrew Shafer, fishing biologist for the Kansas Department of Wildlife.

Despite a lack of rain, the lake is only down a little and fishing is off to a good start.

The news is good for anglers as Memorial Day quickly approaches.

Haven High School to get new principal

HAVEN, Kan. — The Haven USD 312 School Board will take action on several matters this evening.

Current Principal Marty Nienstedt will become the new Director of Learning for the district. He will be replaced by Travis Moore. Moore is currently the Assistant Principal at Derby High School.

Also this evening, Rene McMurpher, a Para at Haven High School, will accept the fourth quarter Impact Award.

The Impact Award winner of the year will be announced at a year-end assembly on Friday.

Tonight’s meeting of the Haven School Board begins at 6 p.m. at Haven’s district offices.

Chamber Breakfast Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce will host its monthly Chamber Breakfast on Wednesday at 7 a.m. at the Atrium. This month’s event is Sponsored by Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System.

The program will feature the Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson, presenting the club’s Epic Skills and Career Exploration programs.

Bandoo signs with Baylor

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — HutchCC sophomore guard Devonte Bandoo has become the fifth Blue Dragon men’s basketball player to sign a letter of intent to further his college and playing career.

Bandoo signed with Baylor University for next year, becoming the first Blue Dragon to sign with the Big 12 program. Bandoo talked about what led him to Baylor:

 

 

 

The Brampton, Ontario, native finished his career at Hutchinson with 1,072 points, which ranks 14th in Blue Dragon history. He was named to the All-Jayhawk Conference and Region 6 first teams.

He was also a part of two National Tournament teams, including the 2017 National Championship.

Student project on display Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 will host an open house for the Building Trades Program 2017-18 home on Tuesday, May 15, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. at 2817 Morris on Hutchinson’s northwest side.

Each year, the Building Trades Program — a joint project of USD 308’s Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy and Hutchinson Community College — constructs a home. Once completed, the home is sold with the proceeds used to fund the following year’s project.

Council will take action on proposed duplex Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On Tuesday, the Hutchinson City Council will look over a property owner’s request to convert a small business into a duplex at 128 W. 5th Ave.

The property is located on the northeast corner of 5th and Adams, just east of Dillons. The request already passed the City Planning Commission on a 7-0 vote of approval.

Also Tuesday, the council will seek approval of the Emergency Solutions Grant for the Sexual Assault Domestic Violence Center for a total of $40,092. The money would help fund the agency’s services in Reno, Kingman, Harper and Rice counties.

Finally, the council will hold a public hearing on an easement vacation for a parcel of land at 4904 Cottonwood Drive and consider proposal requests for the Southwest Bricktown playground project.

Tuesday’s meeting of the Hutchinson City Council begins at 9 a.m. in the Hutchinson city offices.

HFD battles shed fire on East 95th

RENO COUNTY, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department responded to 3305 E. 95th Ave. around 3:30 Thursday afternoon to the report of a shed fire. Arriving units found a fully-involved 15-by-20-foot shed. The fire was contained within minutes.

The eastbound lane of 95th Avenue was closed for an hour while fire units operated at the scene. The fire was caused by an ember that escaped from a burn barrel. No injuries were reported.

The Hutchinson Fire Department would like to remind residents that drought conditions are still extreme in the area even after a few rains.

The type of grass around the area dries out very quickly after a rain. Continue to use caution when doing any type of outdoor burning. Keeping a water source nearby can help prevent a disastrous situation.

Accomplishments, challenges highlighted at latest legislative session

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Senator Ed Berger paid a visit to the Eagle Media Center on Friday to talk about the recently-completed legislative session in Topeka. Berger highlighted the accomplishments and challenges from the session:

 

Berger was part of the state fair sales tax bill that was eventually passed by both chambers and is currently on its way to the governor’s desk.

Hutchinson Art Fair Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 56th annual Hutchinson Art Fair is this Saturday in the Sunflower South Building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds. Patrick Calvillo, Director of the Hutchinson Art Center, says they are ready for a good crowd Saturday:

 

Charlotte Summers, Board President of the Hutchinson Arts Center, says visitors can expect a wide variety of work from a large number of area artists:

 

The artwork from local and regional artists will be available for purchase, along with live music and kids’ art activities. Admission is free. The 56th annual Hutchinson Art Fair runs from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

HutchCC commencement ceremonies Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Nearly 500 students will walk across the stage as the Hutchinson Community College graduating class of 2018 ends the academic year. The commencement ceremony is tonight at 7 in the Sports Arena.

Along with students receiving their diplomas, the College Alumnus of the Year will be named. The Instructor of the Year, as voted on by the student body, will also be named.

The speaker for tonight’s ceremony is Dr. Jean Redeker, the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
