HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Ticket sales are going strong for this year’s Kansas State Fair, but fairgoers have a little extra incentive to buy grandstand concert tickets this week.
The $5 processing fee for Nex-Tech Wireless Grandstand tickets will be waived for purchases made before Thursday, May 10.
The concert lineup kicks off Sept. 7 with KC and the Sunshine Band.

HESSTON, Kan. — When the manufactured housing industry was booming in the 1970s, the city of Hesston built a new and successful mobile home park. But over the years, the area became rundown. Eventually, the park was closed and the trailers were removed.
The city must now figure out what to do with the vacant land. Hesston City Manager Gary Emry understands the need for housing in the small Harvey County community:
The Hesston City Council held a special meeting at King Park last week to address potential development on the south side of town where the mobile home park sat. Emry says those in attendance want the area developed, but also want the city to take its time on the project, so the community reaps the fullest benefit:
Emry noted the council has been considering a multi-use space, patio homes, single-family duplexes/apartments, retail and commercial use, recreational use (and green space) and even the potential for Habitat for Humanity housing on that land. Emry says that raises a lot of questions:
In 2016, the city purchased the mobile home park and established a two-year relocation subsidy for residents. The park started with 42 residents, but is currently down to three.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The HutchCC Board of Trustees will seek approval of a new contract for security services they hope will fill some of the gaps in the current system during Tuesday’s agenda session.
Currently, the college has a full-time security officer and utilizes a service to provide security during that officer’s time off. There are some gaps in the schedule when an officer is not on campus. During Tuesday’s meeting, the board will seek approval of a new service from Securitas at an annual cost of $173,997. With the new service, the campus will now have security on campus 24/7.
The board will also seek approval for the purchase of additional security cameras for the Sports Arena from Dynamic Electronics at a cost of $17,365. The board will then look over the latest curriculum report. The report is used each year to evaluate various courses. Any necessary changes will be made to keep up with current trends.
Tuesday’s meeting of the HutchCC BOT begins at 8 p.m. at the Shears Technology Center on campus.
WICHITA, Kan. — Several area schools were awarded during Sunday night’s Jester Awards Ceremony from the Music Theatre of Wichita. The event was held at the Century II Performing Arts Center’s Convention Hall.
Honorees were named in 25 different categories and scholarship awards were presented to three students, lead male and female honorees and a technical theatre recipient.
Sterling High School’s production of Fiddler on the Roof won five jester Awards including Overall Production for the year. The production also won Jester Awards for Direction of Show, Ensemble and Chorus, Production Number and Vocal Musical Direction.
Buhler High School’s Rachel Thomson was named Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Into the Woods.” Buhler’s Greg Bontrager was also awarded for Lighting Design and Sheri Cunningham was awarded a Jester for Graphic Design along with Nickerson High School’s Scott Logan for his work in the schools production of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Buhler’s Alberton Martinez won a Jester for his work in Design Guest.
The Jester Awards program was designed in 2001 to celebrate excellence in area high school musical theatre. The accolades program showcases the next generation of musical theatre talent in Kansas. Each year, trained volunteer judges attend and evaluate dozens of performances.
Ten schools submitted 13 productions for consideration in the program’s first year. This year, 102 judges viewed 127 performances of 40 productions, involving more than 2,800 students and 40 schools across the state of Kansas.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — While sales fell overall, the second quarter numbers for Siemens Gamesa were still positive. SG, which overtook Vestas last year to become the world’s No. 1 wind turbine maker, said on Friday its order book remained steady in the second quarter, citing record onshore order intake and stabilizing prices.
Still, sales for the wind turbine maker dropped by 29 percent to $2.68 billion, although profits were at $41.7 million following a loss in the first quarter.
Second quarter order intake for its onshore business stood at 2.5 GW, up 54 percent from a year earlier. The increase in orders has allowed the company to call back a large number of workers laid off from the Hutchinson and Fort Madison, Iowa, facilities last fall.
BNSF is next in line to announce quarterly earnings.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Run through the streets with Hutch Rec during June’s Third Thursday event. The Hutch Rec will host the first Smallville 5K & Super Hero 1-mile races, taking place at DCI Park —2nd and Main — as part of the Smallville Festival.
The 1-mile event starts at 8 p.m. and includes one, 1-mile loop around Downtown Hutchinson. The 5K starts at 8:30 p.m. and includes three, 1-mile loops. The 5K race is chip timed with official awards. Participants in all races will receive a race shirt and finisher’s medal at the finish line.
Entry fee is $25 for the Smallville 5K and $15 for youths under 15. Entry fee for the Super Hero 1-mile is $15. You can register online at hutchrec.com or stop by Hutch Rec Downtown at 17 E. 1st.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — During the annual Hutchinson High School Awards Assembly Wednesday, the HHS graduating class of 2018 was recognized with awards and scholarships from local, state and national sources.
The Young American Award winner for 2018 was Raegan Wessel. The Young American Award is the oldest award at HHS with this being its 90th year. The award was started by the Oswald family in the 1920s.
Other finalists for the award were Zane Allender, Jules Martinez, Chandler Ashcraft, Kyra Rodriguez, Austin Childs, Grace Scott, Carson Cox, Rhys Tash and Emily Hendricks.
The Davis Foundation winners were also named. Winners, who each get $6,000 in scholarship money annually for four years, were Carson Cox and Trevin Lanker.
Other Davis finalists were Kyra Rodriguez, Jarod Ferguson, Abbigayle Tyler and Daniel Willis. The other finalists each get $4,000 a year in scholarship money for four years.
This is the 64th year for the Davis Foundation scholarships. During that time, more than 200 students have received scholarships. When the first scholarships were awarded in the 1950s, the scholarships were $500 a year for four years.
Davis Foundation teachers of the year for USD 308 will be announced in August at the opening convocation for district staff.
Emily Hendricks and Trevin Lanker were named Kansas Designated Scholars. Those two and Jason Quick were the Kansas Scholars Curriculum Completers.

ABBYVILLE, Kan. — Emergency crews are working an accident on US-50 near Abbyville. According to Reno County 911, a semi hauling cattle has overturned spilling its contents near the intersection of US-50 and Hodge Rd.
No word on injuries at this time but numerous cattle are reported running loose.
The crash is causing numerous traffic delays at this time. More information later as it becomes available.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The second annual Salthawk Service Day was held this morning throughout Hutchinson. The day was an opportunity for students to get involved with their community. District Spokesperson Ray Hemman says he is always impressed with the students’ reception of the event:
Students cleaned up around the school, placed bird feeders in Carey Park, played games with residents of a local retirement home and provided free breakfast to first responders, utility linesman and military personnel as a way to say thank you for their work and service.
According to the state Board of Education, students who volunteer in their communities are more likely to vote, stay actively involved in service and feel empowered as citizens.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The fireworks display at the Kansas State Fairgrounds during the Boy Scout jamboree two weeks ago certainly got the attention of residents who were not aware of the pending noise and display.
Now, residents should prepare for this weekend. Tonight is the annual fireworks showcase display. Fireworks manufacturers and vendors will show off the latest and greatest for potential shows later this summer.
The Hutchinson Police Department and Reno County 911 hope residents with pets can prepare for the noise.
