Local chiropractor to speak at Kansas Wesleyan about placental allograft treatment

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson chiropractor will be the guest speaker at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina to discuss a form of treatment he’s been using for a little more than a year.

Dr. Christopher Schroeder will talk Thursday, April 25, about the treatment known as placental allograft transplant. The procedure is gaining popularity among chiropractors and other doctors as a way to heal joint damage.

The cells would normally be discarded, but are donated following a C-section. “You’re using cells that are not categorized yet so they can turn into any type of cell. So you can get them to turn into cartilage, or a ledgment, or bone,” Schroeder said.

The procedure is quite easy and requires only one simple shot. The positive effects of the treatment can come quite quickly. “Our average patient is pain free in about four weeks,” Schroeder said. “You’re looking at about four to six months to get 100 percent healed.”

Schroeder has performed more than 500 of these treatments and takes in the oversight of a doctor and nurse to help with the program. While Schroeder is using the treatment for joint injuries or pain, many see that as just the tip of the iceberg. Research is ongoing to tap into the full potential of PAT for kidney patients and even spinal surgery in the future.

There has been controversy surrounding stem cell treatment over the years, but Schroeder wanted to stress that this treatment does not come from any type of abortion procedure.

School board considers Heartland Credit Union branch at Hutch High

HUTCHINSON — Hutchinson USD 308 will consider a contract with Heartland Credit Union for construction and operation of a small branch inside Hutchinson High School during Monday’s agenda session.

The action comes after a presentation by Heartland Credit Union to open the facility back on January 29th. The terms of the contract include a three- year agreement beginning on May 1st.

If the contract is approved, construction in “B-Hall” at HHS would begin this, with the branch opening by the beginning of next school year. Curriculum is being developed and the courses are approved to begin an internship program for HHS/HCTEA business students.

Also Monday, the board is expected to

• Take action on a new contract for bus service with Durham School Services at a cost of just under $20,000 per month.
• Consider a contract with Alexander Open Systems for data storage at a cost of $199,959.

Monday’s USD 308 school board meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the school district offices, 1520 N. Plum.

GreenPlay to disclose city parks recommendations Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The public is invited one final time to hear GreenPlay’s recommendations and final findings on Hutchinson’s parks and recreation master plan Tuesday.

GreenPlay will meet with the public at 6 p.m. at the Shears Technology Center on the HutchCC campus. The consultants will also be attending a joint City Council-Hutch Rec Commission work session Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the City Council chambers, and with a group of community health investors and stakeholders at 11 a.m.

This is one of the final steps in the parks and recreation master plan process, which started late last fall with community meetings, surveys, interviews and analyses of Hutchinson city parks, facilities and recreation programs.

Funding for the master plan project was made possible by the Pathways to a Healthy Kansas Initiative from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas. BCBSKS is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.

Waldron Place offering lunch to first responders

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Waldron Place has decided to thank first responders for all the work they do in the community. Starting Friday, May 3, Waldron Place will provide lunch for all police officers, firefighters and first responders at 1700 E. 23rd.

Whitney Hamby with Waldron Place says it’s a nice way to give a little something back. “We just want to make sure that we recognize all the first responders in our community. We realize what a task it is that they do every day,” Hamby said. “We just really want to thank them for everything they do. I don’t think they get as much credit as they should.”

The lunches will be offered the first Friday of the month for six months. If the response is good, Hamby says they’ll keep doing it.

Scooter’s Coffee coming to Northgate property

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Another business is set to join Genzada at the Northgate property.

Scooter’s Coffee is coming to the corner of 30th and Plum and will be located in the parking lot of Genzada.

Owner Jessica Gillette says Scooter’s will be a 550-square-foot building with a drive-thru offering a wide coffee menu along with tea, smoothies and Red Bull products. There will also be a food menu with breakfast items served throughout the day. The area will have patio seating for customers.

“We really think this is something that this part of 30th Street could use,” Gillette said, adding that she is excited about the store and the way the company runs its business.

Scooter’s Coffee was born in 1998 with the first drive-thru coffeehouse in Bellevue, Nebraska.

Nickerson track teams compete at Sterling

STERLING, Kan. — The Nickerson girls and boys track teams were in Sterling Thursday night. The girls finished in 9th out of 10 teams while the boys ended up with 5th. Sterling won both the girls and boys team titles.

Haven students stranded in Dallas on way to national life skills meet

HAVEN, Kan. — A small group of Haven High School students set to participate in the national LifeSmarts competition probably learned a few lessons on dealing with unexpected circumstances.

James Budge, Nathan Wells, Hayden Peirce, Payton Paramore and Cory Miller were part of the state champion Haven High LifeSmarts team. The group was on its way to Orlando, Florida, but a number of twists and turns prevented them from making it to the competition.

According to teacher Vicki Galloway, the group was late getting out of Wichita because of storms in Dallas. Once the students got to Dallas, the weather worsened. After 12 hours in the airport, their flight was canceled.

After getting a hotel around midnight, the group returned to the airport Sunday morning. However, the flight kept getting put off until it was canceled Sunday afternoon. By then, it was too late to get to Orlando.

The students flew to Tulsa where they spent the night and rented a car. They drove home Monday.

Galloway says the boys were great sports about the whole trip and entertained themselves in the airport by riding the tram, escalator, talking to people, eating and shopping.

From prisoner to mayor: Wilson inspires HCF graduates

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jermaine Wilson was on drugs by age 11. He spent four years on juvenile detention and another three years in prison.

Today he is the mayor of Leavenworth, Kansas.

On Thursday, Wilson shared his success story with 75 inmates at Hutchinson Correctional Facility who graduated from various programs.

“The overall purpose for today was for me to encourage, empower and equip these individuals with the tools they need to become successful,” Wilson said. “I hope my story will give the hope they need to be successful and see that, with God, all things are possible.”

Wilson spoke at the East Unit and Central Unit graduation ceremonies. Graduates were recognized for completing various programs, including GED, Kansas Work Ready, NCCER Core Curriculum (construction basics), plumbing and carpentry.

“Mr. Wilson is an individual with a criminal background who has made a conscious decision that an individual’s past mistakes do not have to define their future success,” Jay Hertel, director of correctional education for Greenbush, said. “Our hope is that these men will be inspired by his words, his experiences and his post-release success.”

Graduates will also be recognized for completing KDOC re-entry programs meant to foster post-release success.

Union Pacific posts record first quarter despite revenue decline

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Although operating revenue and carloads declined, Union Pacific Corporation today reported a record first quarter net income of $1.4 billion, or $1.93 per diluted share. That compares to $1.3 billion, or $1.68 per diluted share, in the first quarter of 2018.

“We delivered record first quarter financial results driven by improved operating performance while dealing with significant weather challenges,” Union Pacific Chairman, President and CEO Lance Fritz said.

Operating revenue of $5.4 billion was down 2% in the first quarter of 2019 compared to the first quarter of 2018. First quarter business volumes, as measured by total revenue carloads, decreased 2% compared to 2018. Volume increases in industrial and premium were more than offset by declines in energy and agricultural products. Energy shipments declined by 16% and ag product dropped 3%. Premium shipments increased by 3% and industrial carloads increased by 5%.

ADM is next in line to release its quarterly earnings April 26.

Phone survey to begin for USD 309 patrons

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the Nickerson USD 309 School District looking at a possible bond issue, the need to know what patrons think is important.

Starting soon, phones will be ringing across the Nickerson-South Hutchinson School District as a comprehensive survey of patrons’ opinions begins.

School district officials say the survey of 267 households will provide insight into what residents think about the district’s strengths, challenges and priorities.

The 10- to 15-minute survey will touch on a wide variety of topics and allow residents the opportunity to share their comments. The survey was designed by Patron Insight, Inc., a Kansas City-based market research organization that has worked with school districts across the Midwest on similar research since 1992.

Participants will be selected totally at random and all responses will be kept completely confidential. In general, calls will be placed between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on weekdays and noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. The caller ID may show “Market Research Associates” or it may simply show an 816 or 913 area code because the company uses calling facilities in both Missouri and Kansas.

The survey process will take about two weeks to complete. The Nickerson-South Hutchinson School District is asking patrons to listen for their phones to ring.
