Strong start propels Cape Fear through to the next round of NJCAA Tournament

HUTCHINSON — Cape Fear got off to quick starts in each half and went on to defeat Arizona Western in the first game of the day at the NJCAA National Basketball Tournament by a score of 104-90.

The Sea Devils jumped out to big leads in each half and kept Arizona Western at bay through out. JJ Miles led five player sin double figures with 28 points. Donte Tatum, Demetric Horton and Quate McKinzie all chipped in 17.

Arizona Western was led by Alfonso Plummer with 26 points. The Matadors end the season at 25-9 while Cape Fear moves on to play No. 1 Northwest Florida State at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

City Council to take action on airport project

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will consider a contract for site work on the T-Hangar project at the Hutchinson Airport during Tuesday’s agenda session. The recommended bid comes from Prairie Landworks at $310,476.

Also Tuesday, the council will hold a public hearing on the request to raze the old sugar mill building. The building suffered a partial collapse last month and the building’s owner wants to take the rest of the structure down. The council is being left to take action on the matter since the Landmarks Commission cannot authorize such demolition since the building is on the list of historic buildings.

Finally, the council will seek approval to follow the state’s change in liquor laws to allow the sale of beer exceeding 3.2 percent alcohol in stores.

Tuesday’s meeting of the Hutchinson City Council begins at 9 a.m. in the Hutchinson city offices.

Moore sentenced to life in prison

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man will likely spend the rest of his life in prison after being sentenced Friday afternoon in a Reno County courtroom.

Judge Tim Chambers handed down the life sentence for 35-year-old Quinton Moore. Moore was recently convicted of first-degree murder in the shooting death of 42-year-old Clarence D. Allen. Under the sentence, Moore won’t be eligible for parole for 51 ½ years.

Allen was shot multiple times in a home in the 1700 block of East 30th. Moore fled the scene of the shooting, but was taken into custody. Under his Miranda rights, Moore admitted to the shooting. Moore had been Allen’s on-again-off-again roommate.

Crews continue to monitor fire that destroyed Hutchinson church

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Clean up continues at 134 E. Sherman where a major structure fire destroyed Foundation of Life Ministries church in Hutchinson Thursday night.

Fire crews spent the day Friday putting out hot spots that continued to burn through the afternoon. Heavy machinery was brought in to tear down the remaining structure. Fire Inspector Tony Arpin says the areas of the building that are still standing are too unstable to allow anyone to enter. The instability could make it difficult to find an exact cause of the blaze.

A notification has been made to the State Fire Marshal’s Office and Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms as standard protocol for church fires.

There were no injuries reported.

Low barometric pressure can cause health issues

Record-setting dip in barometric pressure predicted by forecasters

HUTCHINSON — A robust storm system is expected to bring unsettled weather and windy conditions over the next two days. It might also bring some of the lowest barometric pressure in Kansas since records were kept.

What does that do to your health? Some say it does have an effect on joints and muscles. But what are some of the things that your body goes through with changes in the weather?

According to an article in Migraine Again, the first is blood pressure. “Just as its name implies, our blood moves through our bodies using a pressure system created by the heart,” the article states. “So it makes sense that this pressure would be affected by the pressure in the air around us. According to biometeorologist Jennifer Vanos, Ph.D., when the barometric pressure drops, so does your blood pressure. For some, this might mean a feeling of dizziness or even blurred vision.”

Another health issue could come from those who suffer from migraines. Some doctors say that low barometric pressure can cause headaches or migraines by creating a pressure difference between the atmosphere and the air-filled sinuses. The problem is exacerbated when the sinuses are congested or blocked for any reason.

A symptom most complained about is joint pain. Researchers at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston surveyed 200 patients with knee osteoarthritis and found a link between changes in barometric pressure and ambient temperature and changes in knee pain severity. It’s not clear why a falling barometer would exacerbate joint pain and arthritis, but studies such as this one confirm it does.

Low barometric pressure also can cause problems for diabetics as they try to control their blood sugar. Studies show that blood viscosity increases during cold fronts, making it more difficult to keep blood sugar at stable levels.

Class for potential business owners offered by Hutch chamber

HUTCHINSON — The Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce will host a special class for those who are considering starting their own business.

The class, “Entrepreneurship Connections,” is sponsored by Reno County Entrepreneurship Task Force and SCORE Mentors. The event will be at 5:30 p.m. March 19 at Sandhills Brewing Company, 111 W. Second Ave.

During the class, Sandhills Brewing owner Pippin Williamson will share his story of becoming a small business owner. Current and potential entrepreneurs will then have a chance to share knowledge and gain insight into what it takes to turn a dream into a profitable reality.

Decision on sugar mill could come Tuesday

HUTCHINSON — The fate of a 140-year-old building in Hutchinson likely will be known by next week.

On Feb. 4, a portion of the former sugar mill collapsed. Since then, the limestone structure has been inspected and the cost to make any necessary repairs is more than the owner of the building can afford.

Since the Landmarks Commission can not make such a recommendation to raze the building, it falls on the hands of the Hutchinson City Council. The owners have been in contact with the city and the Landmarks Commission and the council is expected to take action on the building during its March 19.

The sugar mill was opened in 1881 but quickly closed. The building housed several other businesses over the years before closing for good in 1978.

Cyclist dies in popular race at Cheney Reservoir

CHENEY, Kan. — An Olathe man died during a cycling race at Cheney Reservoir over the weekend.

The Reno County sheriff’s department reports that 48-year-old William “Craig” Henwood was racing in the Rage Against the Chainring gravel bicycle race on Saturday. According to the report, Henwood started to drift left in front of a pack of riders when his bike left the road. He tumbled over the front of the handlebars and hit his head.

CPR was performed and Henwood responded to it for a short time, but was eventually pronounced dead at the scene. He was taken to the Wichita Forensics Center for more tests. It is not known at this time whether Henwood had a medical condition at the time of the accident.

The Rage Against the Chainring is a popular event that is part of a race series put on by the Kansas Cycling Association.
