HUTCHINSON — The fate of a 140-year-old building in Hutchinson likely will be known by next week.

On Feb. 4, a portion of the former sugar mill collapsed. Since then, the limestone structure has been inspected and the cost to make any necessary repairs is more than the owner of the building can afford.

Since the Landmarks Commission can not make such a recommendation to raze the building, it falls on the hands of the Hutchinson City Council. The owners have been in contact with the city and the Landmarks Commission and the council is expected to take action on the building during its March 19.

The sugar mill was opened in 1881 but quickly closed. The building housed several other businesses over the years before closing for good in 1978.
