Online program helping students with math

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — An online program used by Hutchinson USD 308 is helping students push through learning roadblocks. The program, i-Ready, is being used at the elementary level to help students improve beyond their grade levels in math studies.

Wyatt says i-Ready uses assessments for each student and then provides solutions that are implemented by the teacher to help each student reach their goal, whether that be catching up or surpassing their current grade level:

There is also a little competition among the schools involved. Math Miners is a program that connects with the mining industry in Hutchinson. Wyatt says the competition adds a little more incentive for students to reach their goals:

Under the program, the number of students at grade level or better has increased by 17 percent, while the number of students falling two or more grades behind in math has decreased by 12 percent.

Amtrak’s SW Chief involved in fatality accident

PEABODY, Kan. — One person was killed when his car was hit by Amtrak’s Southwest Chief in Marion County early this morning.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office says 67-year-old Steven Holdren was parked in his vehicle on the tracks with the lights off when the westbound train struck him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one on board the train was injured, but it did delay the westbound train for more than six hours. The train normally arrives in Hutchinson around 3:20 a.m. but did not get into the station until 9:30.

The accident happened around 2:45 a.m. three miles east of Peabody.

Blue Dragon football announces 30 signings to 4-year programs

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The HutchCC Football team released a list of 30 Blue Dragons that have signed with four-year programs for next year.

Of the 30 players, seven of them are from a defensive line that was both talented and very deep. It also includes linebacker Monty Montgomery, who signed with Louisville and defensive back Kelvin Clemmons, who will attend Minnesota.

On the offensive side, Mason Schucker — who started most of the year at quarterback for the Dragons — will play at Southeast Louisiana. Wide receivers Jaylin Erwin and Khalil McClain have also signed. Erwin will attend UCLA, while McClain will play at Troy University.

HutchCC track team has another strong weekend

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College women’s track team didn’t pick up any new national qualifiers on Saturday, but several athletes moved up historical Blue Dragon performance charts.

The Blue Dragons were split between the Gorilla Classic at the Plaster Center in Pittsburg and the Scottie Classic at the Walter’s Wellness Center in Highland.

At Pittsburg, sophomore Jewel Bolden, who ran 8.99 seconds on Friday in qualifying for the 60-meter hurdles, lowered that time on Saturday in the preliminaries with a time of 8.97 seconds. She didn’t qualify for the finals, but her time was the second-fastest in Blue Dragon indoor history.

Freshman Gabby Collins ran a time of 2 minutes, 27.31 seconds in the Gorilla Classic 800 meters. The Blue Dragon cross country All-American posted the sixth-fastest in Blue Dragon indoor history.

A pair of distance runners made a huge move up the 3,000-meter charts at Pittsburg on Saturday.

Freshman Sheila Too ran a time of 11:03.00 and sophomore Aileen Gomez ran a time of 11:16.30. Too and Gomez ran the second- and third-fastest times, respectively, in Blue Dragon indoor history.

For the men, cross country All-American Brett Hillabrand earned his second individual national qualification. On Saturday, Hillabrand qualified in the mile with a time of 4 minutes, 22.94 seconds. That’s the sixth-best time in Blue Dragon indoor history.

Freshman Sylvestre Kibarar also qualified in a second individual event when he posted a national qualifying time in the 5,000 meters. His time of 15.12.77 is the second-fastest time in team indoor history.

Sophomore Jared Stark ran a PR in the 3,000 meters and earned a nationals berth with a time of 8:50.82. That is the fourth-fastest time in Blue Dragon indoor history.

Sophomore Jason Luft qualified in the 800 meters. His time of 1:57.69 is the eighth fastest in Blue Dragon indoor history.

At Highland, Garet Johnson earned a spot in the national championships when he won the Scottie Classic shot put with a PR throw of 49 feet, 4 1/2 inches. Johnson also won the weight throw at Highland at 44-2 3/4.

Already qualified for nationals, the Blue Dragon men’s 4×400 relay team posted the ninth-fastest time in the nation at Pittsburg on Saturday. The relay of Dusty Torres, Denilson Whitmore, Donovan Whitmore and Elijah Smith ran a time of 3:17.72, which is the third fastest in Blue Dragon indoor history.

The Blue Dragons next compete at the Region VI Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday at the Plaster Center in Pittsburg.

Hutch swimmers participate at AVCTL meet

SALINA, Kan. — The Hutchinson High swim team finished sixth in the final team standings at the AVCTL meet held over the weekend in Salina. Derby won the team title with 419 points, followed by Maize and Salina South. The Salthawks ended the day with 202 points.

USD 308 seeks better visibility and branding

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 School District wants to upgrade its message and branding. It started with special decals on several vans and service vehicles last month. The district wants to continue with that branding. USD 308 hired QueenBee marketing to help with the project.

The work includes a unified image for the district, adoption of the popular H-hawk logo made famous by the football team, using the name Salthawk or Salthawks as official mascot names, and completing the necessary process for trademark and copyright appropriate images to represent the district.

The matter comes up for action during Monday’s school board meeting at 6 p.m. at the USD 308 administration center at 1520 N. Plum.

KDHE lifts boil water advisory at Cheney Lake

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded a boil water advisory for the Cheney State Park Marina. The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure due to line repairs.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the Cheney State Park Marina indicate no evidence of contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

David named president of Eagle Communications

HAYS, Kan. — Eagle Communications announced today that Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Kurt K. David has been promoted to president and chief operating officer, effective immediately.

David has served as chief financial officer at Eagle Communications since 2006 and has worked as part of the financial services and communications industry in Kansas for over 25 years. Gary Shorman will continue as chairman and CEO of Eagle Communications and
president of the Schmidt Foundation.

“Kurt’s new leadership role represents the ‘forward ever’ growth of our company, in employee ownership, financial, advocacy, and community leadership,” Shorman said. “We believe that advancing good people is one of the hallmarks of our success.” David earned an undergraduate degree in finance and management from Kansas State University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Kansas. He also has a Master of Agribusiness from Kansas State University.

He has held officer and leadership positions with the Ellis County Coalition for Economic Development, Heart of America Development Corporation, Rotary and the Ellis County Historical Society. Kurt is also past chair of the Kansas Cable and Telecommunications Association. He is an avid triathlete competing locally, regionally and at the World Championship level. Kurt and his wife, Kathy, have two children: Hayden (Olathe, Kansas) and Jennifer (New Orleans, Louisiana).

In addition to David’s promotion, the Eagle Board has promoted Travis Kohlrus to vice president of Eagle Broadband Division that provides TV, internet, phone, as well as technology and marketing solutions in over 60 communities across Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado.

“Under Kohlrus’s leadership, our Broadband Division has seen exciting growth,” Shorman said. “This promotion is appropriate as Travis represents us in community and state issues facing our company. The change also signifies the importance of leadership growth as we look to continue to build our company for the next 20 years.”

A native of Ellis, Kansas, Kohlrus joined Eagle Communications in 2003. He was elected to the Eagle Communications Board in April 2017. Kohlrus and his wife, Susie, have two children: Tanner (14) and MaKenzie (11).

Hutchinson USD 308 schools closed Thursday

Search continues for new South Hutchinson police chief

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The South Hutchinson City Council continues its search for a new police chief.

The city has been without a chief since the council decided not to reappoint Mark Thompson at the start of the new year. According to Mayor Luke Herren, the city has narrowed its choice down to six applicants. Some have already been interviewed.

Herren says the city is in no hurry to name a new chief and could not give a timeline for when the position would be filled.

Thompson took over for former Chief Scott Jones, who retired in 2017. Since then, the police department staff was cut in a string of cost-cutting moves by the city to keep the budget in line.
