COFFEYVILLE, Kan. — Riley Metzger hit a pair of home runs and Logan Sartori drove in four runs to lead the No. 20-ranked Hutchinson Community College baseball team to a season-opening 11-8 victory over Coffeyville at Walter Johnson Park.

Hutchinson’s rally from a seven-run deficit after five innings fell short in Game 2 of the doubleheader. Coffeyville earned a split with the Dragons with a 9-7 win.

The 1-1 Blue Dragons will open at Hobart-Detter Field this Friday against the Highland Scotties.

GAME 1 RECAP

The season started off in grand fashion when Sartori hit a two-run home run in his first plate appearance. Coffeyville then scored three in the bottom the first.

Hutch immediately answered with a RBI double by Jeremiah Ceasar to tie the game. Dylan Nedved then hit an two-out RBI single to take the lead for good as part of a three-run second.

Metzger hit the first of his two home runs, a two-run shot, in the third to give Hutch a 7-4 lead. The then hit a three-run homer in the fourth for an 11-4 lead.

The Blue Dragons then had to hold on as Coffeyville scored one in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Winning pitcher Matt Delcambre pitched a scoreless sixth and Nedved pitched a 1-2-3 seventh with one strikeout to close the game out.

The Blue Dragons pounded out 12 hits in the opening game with five players racking up multi-hit games.

Metzger was 2 for 4 with a pair of home runs, five RBIs and two runs scored.

Sartori went 3 for 4 with a double and four RBIs. Nedved, Zach Baxley and Zane Schmidt all had two hits. Baxley had a double.

Starting pitcher Miguel Reyes went three-plus innings and allowed six hits, five runs (four earned) with two walks and no strikeouts. Delcambre (1-0) worked three innings with two hits and three earned runs allowed. He had three strikeouts and two walks.

GAME 2 RECAP

Coffeyville jumped out to an 8-0 lead through four innings with runs scored in the Red Ravens first five at-bats. Hutch starter L.J. McDonough lasted just 2-3 inning as four Blue Dragon pitchers allowed nine hits and six walks, but struck out 14.

Coffeyville pitcher Jackson Blancarte was solid for four innings with eight strikeouts. Hutch got to Blancarte with two outs in the fifth. Schmidt had an RBI single, Ryan Moritz a two-run double and Zach Baxley had an RBI single to cut the Coffeyville lead to 8-4.

Trailing 9-4 into the eighth, the Blue Dragons scored three on a Nedved RBI single, Schmidt sacrifice fly and Sartori scoring on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 9-7.

The Blue Dragons brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth with two out, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Baxley went 2 for 4 with an RBI to lead Hutchinson’s seven-hit attack. Schmidt and Moritz drove in two runs each.

Sophomore Matt Hopkins struck out four in two scoreless innings. Jake Bunz fanned five Ravens in two innings. He allowed two unearned runs. McDonough struck out two and walked four in 2-3 inning. Mike Brown had three strikeouts in 2 1-3 innings.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Buhler girls bowling team kept its perfect season intact by winning the eight-team Buhler Classic at The Alley over the weekend.

The girls finished with a team total of 2,480 to take the title, followed by El Dorado and Andover. Mary Chambers led the way for the Crusaders with a 220 high game and the high series of 514.

On the boys side, the Crusaders ended the day in third place behind El Dorado, who shot a team total of 3,162. Salina Central was next at 2,968. Buhler finished with 2,785. Noah Sheahan had the high game with a 224 and the high series of 634.

 

 

 

 

ROSE HILL, Kan. — Levi Allen’s fourth-place finish was the best Salthawk wrestlers could muster in a very tough field at the Rose Hill Invitational over the weekend. Allen placed fourth in the 170 pound class. He was the only Salthawk to make the final rounds.

The Salthawks finished 16th out of 24 teams.

CRETE, Neb. — Hutchinson Community College sprinters Jared Scott and Brock Appiah went 1-2 in two different events on Saturday as the Blue Dragon track and field team competed at the Fred Beile Classic at Doane University’s Fuhrer Fieldhouse.

Scott and Appiah highlighted five new Blue Dragon qualifiers for the NJCAA Indoor Championships in March in Pittsburg. Hutchinson now has 10 qualifiers through two indoor meets.

The day started with Scott and Appiah finishing 1-2 in the 60-meter finals. Scott had a time of 6.87 seconds and Appiah’s was 6.92 seconds. Denilson Whitmore placed fifth in 7.02 seconds.

Those three then swept the top three spots in the 200 meters with Appiah joining the growing list of NJCAA Indoor national qualifiers. Already a national qualifier, Scott improved is 200 time to 21.56 seconds, which ranks third on the Blue Dragon indoor list. Appiah qualified with a second-place time of 21.96 seconds, which is eighth on the Blue Dragon indoor charts. Whitmore was third 22.46 seconds.

The Blue Dragons earned four more national qualifiers on Saturday to bring the season total to 10.

The Dragons picked up two new qualifiers in the 1,000 meters. Freshman Brett Hillabrand finished second with a time of 2:32.88. Connor Kaufman earned his second individual national qualification with a seventh-place finish in 2:33.78.

Also earning a second national qualification is freshman Sylvestre Kibarar, who punched his ticket in the mile run. Kibarar placed second in the mile with a time of 4:26.60. Kibarar also won the Beile 3,000 meters in 9:03.91. Kibarar is already qualified in the 3,000.

Already qualified, the Blue Dragon 4×400 relay was Hutchinson’s other event winner on Saturday. The relay team of Dusty Torres, Denilson Whitmore, Donovan Whitmore and Elijah Smith won with a time of 3:21.43, the sixth-fastest time in Hutch indoor history.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Buhler girls bowling team stayed undefeated in league play and the boys made it a sweep during a dual meet at The Alley on Tuesday.

On the girls side, Jaiden Montandon had one of her best meets of the year. She shot the high game of 210 and the high series of 614 to power the girls to a 2,763-2,540 win.

The boys came away with a 3,125-2,534 win. The Crusaders got a strong showing from Creyton Nisly, who shot a game-high 235. Noah Sheahan had high series honors with a three-game total of 586.

The Crusaders stay at home this Saturday for the Crusader Invitational with 10 teams expected to be on hand. The action gets underway at 8 a.m. at The Alley.
