Council approves new agreement with police, cancels January meeting

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council gave approval to a new collective bargaining agreement with the local FOP representing the city’s police force.

The new contract, which will run through 2019 reflects, changes to the wage scale and performance pay requirements. It also provides payments to officers who perform specialty roles as assigned by the Chief.

Also Tuesday, the Council approved the lease with four results for part of the parking lot, located at Sherman and Walnut.

The Council also decided that due to the New Year holiday, the meeting which would have been held on Jan. 1, will be canceled and not rescheduled. The next regular meeting of the Hutchinson City Council will be Jan. 15.

Chamber annual meeting dinner tickets almost sold out

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — This year, the Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce expanded the amount of seating for this years annual meeting from 880 to 1,000 due to the popularity of the event.

And even with extra tickets, the meeting is nearly sold out. According to the Chamber, only 200 dinner tickets remain for the Feb. 11 event while plenty of gallery seating still remains.

Tickets for Chamber members are $60 if purchased by Jan. 8. After that, the price goes up to $70. Non-member tickets are $80. Gallery seating will be available again this year for members $10 in advance and $20 at the door, while $20 in advance and $30 at the door for non-members.

The keynote speakers for this year’s event are authors of the documentary “I’ll Push You” — Justin Skeesuck and Patrick Gray, inspirational adventurers and lifelong friends.

Also new this year, will be a special trade show prior to the meeting in the auxiliary gymnasiums. The event will run from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. and if you visit by 5 p.m., you can register for a night out on the town courtesy of the chamber.

USD 309 School Board looks to 2019 fall election for possible bond issue

NICKERSON, Kan. — The Nickerson USD 309 School Board got their first look at a proposed $34 million facilities improvement plan during their meeting Monday.

The proposal presented to the board was two bond issues, one dependent of passage of the other. The first proposal would total $24.5 million and would include controlled entries along with a new early childhood addition, a new multi-purpose room and two new classrooms in South Hutchinson.

At Reno Valley Middle School work would include wrestling and weight room additions. In Nickerson, the high school work would include remodeled science and culinary study areas and a new media center. The second part of the bond issue if approved would total $9.5 million and would provide a new fine arts centers for the high school.

Because of the states bond cap, the district will have to wait until the next fiscal year, which starts in July, to get the proposal on the ballot. If all goes as planned and the project gets approval from the state district, patrons will be able to vote on the bond issue in November.

Area residents can take advantage of extended hours at drivers license offices

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Residents in the Hutchinson area who need to do business with the local drivers license office at 125 W 2nd will have more opportunities to do so during the Christmas holiday.

The State of Kansas announced Tuesday that drivers license offices statewide will offer extended hours the week of Christmas and New Years. The center will be open Dec. 26 through Dec. 28. The offices will be closed over the weekend and then reopen Dec. 31.

After taking the day off for the New Year, the offices open again Jan. 1 through Jan. 4. Office hours during the period will be from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Customers seeking Real ID should come in to the office with the required documents that can be found on a checklist at ksrevenue.org/realid.

Normal business hours will resume on Monday, Jan. 7, which for most offices statewide is 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday.

City Council to take action on new FOP contract

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will consider a new collective bargaining agreement with the union representing the police officers for the city during Tuesday’s agenda session.

The new contract reflects changes to the wage scale and performance pay requirements. It also provides payments to officers who perform specialty roles as assigned by the chief.

The contract runs for the 2019 year.

Also Tuesday, the council will seek approval of a lease with four results for part of the parking lot located at Sherman and Walnut. Finally, the council will hold a public hearing on a budget amendment for this year.

Tuesday’s Hutchinson City Council meeting begins at 9 a.m. in the Hutchinson city offices.

Chamber to hold MBA course

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Clinic and the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce have partnered with the Center for Management Development at WSU to offer a 10-week mini MBA program for high-potential professionals.

The goal of this program is to make you more effective by providing a framework of knowledge for making informed business decisions on issues affecting organizations today.

The program begins Feb. 13 and will run once per month through November. Participants must attend at least nine of the 10 classes. The cost to attend is $1,665 providing the chamber can get enough participants signed up.

Salvation Army just past the halfway mark in bell ringing campaign

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Salvation Army is still working to meet its financial obligations for next year with its annual bell ringing campaign.

The Salvation Army is currently at 53 percent of its fundraising goal for the Christmas season. That amounts to $35,969 raised since the Red Kettle Campaign started on Nov. 23. Seven days remain to make up the remaining $30,700 as the fundraising effort ends on Dec. 24 at 6 p.m.

The overall goal of $66,000 goes to support critical programs that help those who are in need throughout the entire year. Those programs include the Representative Payee program that helps provide financial stability for more than 100 individuals who receive government benefits, keeping them housed and their immediate needs provided for.

The money also supports Emergency Services that help individuals and families who are at risk of losing their housing or who are struggling with keeping their utilities.

Community members can help by donating at the Red Kettle locations or by bringing in a donation to The Salvation Army offices at 700 N. Walnut.

Salthawk wrestlers finish 5th at Emporia Winter Classic

EMPORIA, Kan. — The Hutch High wrestling team had a strong showing at the Emporia Invitational over the weekend. The Salthawks finished fifth out of 13 teams. Lawrence Free State won the meet, followed by Junction City, Emporia and Goddard Eisenhower.

Nickerson USD 309 Board to hear facilities improvement plan Monday

NICKERSON, Kan. — The Nickerson USD 309 School Board will get their first look at what a steering committee sees as the needs for the district during their Monday meeting.

The presentation is the starting point for what could be a $34-million bond issue. The proposal calls for no new buildings but major additions and renovations to three schools, especially South Hutchinson Elementary School.

The proposal would actually be two bond issues, one dependent of passage on the other. The first proposal would total $24.5 million and would include controlled entries along with a new early childhood addition, a new multi-purpose room and two new classrooms at South Hutchinson. At Reno Valley Middle School, work would include wrestling and weight room additions. At Nickerson, the high school work would include remodeled science and culinary study areas and a new media center.

In addition, all three buildings would have storm shelters, improved secure entry ways, better bus loading and a complete overhaul of the building’s infrastructure. If the first phase passes, voters would get to then decide on an additional $9.5 million worth of items including a fine arts addition at the high school and two additional classrooms to the middle school.

Monday’s meeting of the USD 309 School Board begins at 7 p.m. at Reno Valley Middle School.
