On November 22, 15-point bucks and 20-pound walleye took a collective breath. Hunting scopes and fishing poles owned by Jory rested patiently. Paint brushes, canvases and colored pencils stayed tucked into their holding places, and Jory’s musical and artistic works halted without completion.

Creation paused to bear witness as Jory met the Ultimate Creator, who designed the most outstanding work of artistry––the masterpiece of Jory’s family: Tamara, Braeden, Blayne, Halee, and Kyler.

In every work of art the artist himself is present. Jory’s legacy lives on. In Braeden, Jory lives on not only in his name, but through his music, through the rhythm of his drums and heart, and his compassion and gentleness. In Blayne, through the stillness of nature and in hunting, Jory’s calmness and strength resides. Through Halee, Jory will still be found in her singing and the strum of her guitar strings, in humor, a heart for service, and her journey in faith. In Kyler, Jory is found in his love of sports, his orneriness, his smile, and his ability to lighten the mood. In and through Tamara, the faith, love, joy and purpose they shared together will continue to impact the world deeply.

The picture painted by Jory’s family and friends portrays a man who was compassionate, patient, kind, caring, calm, loving, witty, and present.  He was devoted to God, his wife and kids, family, friends, and the ordinary person on the street. He loved people without judgment, even if they weren’t Greenbay Packers fans. The internet will miss his ‘Tic Tok’ clips with Halee. Jory never let a fish win––even to the extreme of swapping his iPhone for his fishing pole on the bottom of the White River. He loved playing cards and playing sports with friends and family. Despite his receding hair, he regularly rocked out to hair bands. He kept his loved ones laughing and eye-rolling with his dad-jokes, and his ‘pretty amazing’ dance moves. He never shied away from the opportunity to pose for a photo that would keep loved ones in stitches.

Jory loved teaching and sharing his love of art to students. He also excelled at coaching. His team’s 89-9 record during the 14 years he coached at PHMS didn’t consist solely of winning games––he won the hearts of the kids on and off the field.

Jory will forever be loved and missed by: his parents, Reg and Jan (Heine) Konrade; siblings Jason (Monica) Konrade, Fr. Jarett Konrade, Jon (Laura) Konrade, Jamie (Amy) Konrade, and Jenell (Brad) Hartman; parents-in-law, Paul and Merlene Hoerner; brother-in-law, Chad (Chelsea) Hoerner; sister-in-law, Angie Hoerner; and 21 nieces and nephews.

What Jory left behind isn’t only painted on canvas or built by wood, it is woven into the lives of anyone who loved him.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 27, 2019, and a vigil will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, both at CrossPoint Church, 1410 E 30^th Ave., Hutchinson. John Wayne Smith, 72, of Hutchinson, died November 22, 2019, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born March 13, 1947, in Hutchinson, to Wesley W. and Alma P. (Browning) Smith.

John graduated from Buhler High School in 1965 and took some special interest classes at Hutchinson Community College. He served in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1970. John was a truck driver for Yellow Freight for over 30 years. He was a member of Teamsters Local #795 and was a licensed HAM radio operator. John loved playing the Kansas Lottery.

He is survived by: daughters, Malynda Jarrett (Mack) and Rachel Law, all of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Allexis Cohen (Joshua), Joshua Lightsey (Mikayla), Johncie Brown, Craig Law (Christine), Dustin Law (Hayden), Ashton Garcia (Nicholas); sisters, Rose Lingle (Al), Anaheim, CA, Alma Arnold (Carl), Colorado Springs, CO, Judy Guffey, Hutchinson; sister-in-law, Roberta Smith, Hutchinson; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

John was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Charles.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 27, 2019, at Journey@South Hutchinson, 808 S. Poplar, South Hutchinson, with Pastor Matt Stafford officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, with family present from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary.

Mary ‘Jean’ Wallace, 90, of Hutchinson, died November 22, 2019, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born February 26, 1929, in Tescott, the daughter of Levi and Edna (Woods) Ribble. Jean graduated from Tescott High School and worked as an ombudsman for the state of Kansas and as a caregiver in people’s homes.  She enjoyed gardening and yard work.

Jean is survived by: children, Michael D. Wallace (Becky) of Hutchinson, Debbie Gibson, of Hutchinson, Kathy McClanahan (Jud), of Salina, Becky Wallace, of Hutchinson; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and her dog, Sugar.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; son, Douglas Wallace; and husband, Oliver Wallace.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at Fairlawn Burial Park, 2401 Carey Boulevard, Hutchinson.

Kathy Jane Smith, 65, of Hutchinson, died November 18, 2019, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born February 4, 1954, in Manila, Arkansas, to Henry and Helen Louise (Walters) Ewing.

Kathy was a CNC machinist at Eaton Corporation and retired with over 40 years of service. She enjoyed playing Bunco and doing any type of craft project, but her family and their activities were the things that brought her the most joy.

On November 23, 2002, Kathy married Max Curtis Smith in Inman. He died July 9, 2017.

She is survived by: daughter, Belitha (Bret) Elmore of Moundridge; son, Billy (Kendra) Taber of Hutchinson; stepdaughter, Brenda Grant; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three siblings.

Kathy was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Max C. Smith; one grandson; and four siblings.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, November 23, 2019, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, with Pastor John Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Wanda Jean Evans Markhart, 74, slipped from her earthly body into the loving arms of her Heavenly Father on November 16, 2019.

Wanda was born in Mammoth Springs, Arizona on August 11, 1945 to Robert and Onie Evans. Growing up on the farm she learned early the value of hard work and dedication to task. Values which followed her all through this life. Wanda later moved to Hutchinson in her teens. It was in Hutchinson that she met and married Lonnie Markhart, and it was here that her work ethic and values shown thru as a wife, mother, Sunday school teacher and worker. I would guess there are literally thousands of people across Reno County that could testify to Wanda’s artistry in the kitchen. Wanda was also known to sit in on a bingo game or two, occasionally.

Wanda was preceded in death by her Husband of 52 years Lonnie D. Markhart, both parents, two brothers, Noal (Wren) Evans and John Evans and two sisters, Bobbie Mount (Benny) and Bertha Sisk.

Staying behind are her two daughters; Robyn Renee (Pat Reardon, fiancé) of Coffeyville, KS, Ruth Ann (Rob) Gilbert of Lawrence, KS; adopted son Jeff Englund currently of Illinois; a sister Mattie Markhart and a brother Earl Evans and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

A celebration of Wanda’s life will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, November 22, 2019 at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson, KS, with Rev. Victor Halfmoon officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. with family present to greet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Funeral Chapel. Memorials may be given to the Hutchinson Humane Society or Reno County Hospice and can be sent in care of the funeral chapel.
