James Thomas ‘Jim’ Terrill, 72, of Hutchinson, died Friday, August 24, 2018, at Graber House, Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson. He was born February 5, 1946, in Hutchinson, to Thomas and Jean (Jacques) Terrill.

James graduated from Partridge High School in 1964 and Hutchinson Community College in 1966. He worked at Wal-Mart as assistant manager for 25 years and previously worked for Sears for several years. James was a member of the Mitchell United Methodist Chapel. He proudly served in the United States Air National Guard from 1966 to 1972.

On November 16, 1974, he married Nancy Foster in Hutchinson. James is survived by: wife, Nancy of Hutchinson; daughters, Abby Dresser and husband Steve of Kansas City, MO, Amanda O’Brien and husband Danny of Kansas City, KS; sister, Nancy Morrow and husband B. Charles of Wichita; grandsons, Ben Dresser of Kansas City, MO, Colin O’Brien of Kansas City, KS; and granddaughter, Hannah Dresser of Kansas City, MO.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, September 1, 2018, at Mitchell United Methodist Chapel, 5512 N. Pennington Rd., Hutchinson, with Pastor Jeff Goetzinger and the Reverend Amy Foster officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson, with military honors conducted by McConnell Air Force Base Honor Guard. Friends may sign the book from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Bertha ‘Louise’ Choat Dicks, 89, of Hutchinson, died August 27, 2018, at Buhler Sunshine Home. She was born July 16, 1929, in Quinton, OK, one of six children to William and Myrtle Choat.

On May 1, 1949, Louise married ‘Sonny’ Dicks in Hutchinson. They had two daughters, Tanis and Sally. Sonny died Nov. 30, 1986. Louise was a member of Eastwood Church of Christ. She was employed by Hutchinson National Bank and Home State Bank of McPherson during her career. Louise was an artist, creating scenery and portrait oil paintings.

Louise is survived by: daughter, Tanis and husband Dan Williamson, of Smyrna, GA, Dan’s sons, Tom, Josh and Adam, grandson, Troy Morrow, great-granddaughter,  Chelsea, great-great-grandchildren, Aubree, Charlotte and Isaac, great-grandsons, Evan and Ethen, granddaughter, Debi Pfenninger, great-grandson, Jordan and wife Jenna Pfenninger, great-great-grandson, Luke, great-grandson, Tyler and wife Kayli Pfenninger, and great-great-grandsons, Trityn and Kohyn. Louise’s daughter, Sally and husband Dan Osner, of Hutchinson, grandson, Phillip and wife Jessica Osner, and great-grandchildren, Madyson, Lilly and Deacon, granddaughter, Marcy and husband Amit Patel, greatgrandson, Charlie, granddaughter, Holly Patton, and great-grandchildren, Amiee, Jessica, Darian, Erin and Eric, grandson, Paul Patton, and great-grandchildren, Makayla and Amberlie. Louise is also survived by her two sisters, Shirley and Virginia.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; two sisters; and a brother.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2018, at Fairlawn Burial Park, 2401 Carey Blvd., Hutchinson, KS, with Wayne DeWindt officiating. Dorothy Elaine ‘Dottie’ Schrag, 74, of South Hutchinson, was welcomed home by her Savior on August 25, 2018, at her home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Dottie was born March 25, 1944, in rural Reno county, the daughter of Daniel B. and Esther E. (Stucky) Schrag.

She graduated from Central Christian High School, Hutchinson, Bethel Deaconess School of Nursing, Newton, and received her bachelor’s degree from Grace University, Omaha, NE. Dottie worked as a Registered Nurse for Hutchinson Hospital, Hutchinson Clinic, and the Medical Center. She was a lifetime member of First Mennonite Church, Pretty Prairie, and was active in various ministries of the church.

Dottie is survived by: sisters, Betty Harder of Newton, Ruth Schrag, Pauline Schrag, Leona Schrag, all of South Hutchinson, Rosella Pahl and husband Don of Gardner; nephews, Jon Pahl (Amy) and Nate Pahl (Kimbra) of Olathe; great-nieces and nephews, Caleb, Ashley, Ryan, Cohen, Finley, and Adleigh Pahl; aunts, Mary Pauls (John) of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Ellen Stucky of Moundridge; uncle, Ben Friesen of Hutchinson; and many other cousins, relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by: her parents; brother-in-law, Harold Harder; and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2018, at First Mennonite Church, 1718 W. Pretty Prairie Rd., Pretty Prairie, with Dr. Don Pahl and Pastor Don Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present to receive friends from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

Rudolf M. ‘Rudy’ Garcia Sr., 93, of Hutchinson, died Thursday, August 23, 2018, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born September 4, 1924, in Hutchinson, to Mauro and Pauline (Jaramillo) Garcia.

Rudolf attended Salt City Business College. He retired from KSIR (later known as Hutchinson Correctional Facility) as a correctional officer. Rudolf proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

On October 29, 1949, he married Ofelia Rodriguez in Newton. She survives. Rudolf is survived by: his wife, Ofelia of Hutchinson; son, Rudy Garcia Jr. and wife Kelly of Hutchinson; daughters, Cecilia Eldredge, and Helen Weis and husband Thomas, all of Hutchinson; sisters, Irene Anzo and Virginia Roman, both of Hutchinson; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Rudolf was preceded in death by: his parents; sisters, Angie Amaro and Katie Gallardo; brothers, Morris and John Garcia; and son-in-law, Charles Eldredge.

Parish Rosary will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2018, at Church of the Holy Cross, 2631 Independence Rd., Hutchinson. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m., officiated by Reverend Juan Garza. Deanna L. ‘Dee’ Riney, 72, of Hutchinson, died Thursday, August 23, 2018, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born December 25, 1945, in Hutchinson, the daughter of Earnest Wesley and Ruby Elenor (Schroll) Watkins.

Dee was a 1962 graduate of Hutchinson High School. She had worked as a welder, saw operator, and retired as an administrative assistant from SNC Security.

On June 1, 1974, Dee married Freddie Ray Riney in Kingman, Kansas. He died April 3, 2017. Survivors include: daughter, Debbi Nachtigal and husband Chad of Hutchinson; brother, Wesley Watkins and wife Jolene of Wichita; three grandsons, Tarryn Riney and wife Rita, Reece Marshall, and Josh Nachtigal, all of Hutchinson; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial graveside service will be 1 p.m. Monday, August 27, 2018, at Memorial Park Cemetery, with Pastor Paul Thurston officiating. Friends may sign her book from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

Elden R. Austin DVM, 82, of Hutchinson, died August 21, 2018, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson. Dr. Austin was born September 8, 1935, in Julesburg, Colorado, to LeRoy and Katherine (Spindler) Austin.

Dr. Austin graduated from Julesburg High School in 1953, where he excelled at football and basketball. He graduated from Colorado State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, Fort Collins, Colorado, in 1959. While an undergraduate, he was a proud member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he was assigned to the Air Force Veterinary Corps. He served as a Captain at the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command base in Plattsburgh, New York, until 1961. On December 7, 1961, he purchased the Hutchinson Small Animal Hospital, located at 1201 E. 30th Street, retiring from there in 2009 after 47 years of practice. He passed his practice to his son, Jonathan, who carries on his legacy. Dr. Austin was renowned for his gentle and compassionate demeanor. He was a member of the KVMA and AMVA, throughout his entire career.

In 1958, Dr. Austin married Shelia Ann Scott and they had four sons, all growing up in Hutchinson. They divorced in 1988. Dr. Austin was deeply involved in his son’s lives and served as a mentor and role model. He was a T-ball coach, and an assistant Scout Master for Troop 301, where all his sons became Eagle Scouts. He co-owned and flew a Cessna 177 Cardinal in private aviation, flying his family around the area and providing many lasting memories. He was a Rotarian for 33 years, serving as vice-president, and becoming a Paul Harris Fellow in the organization. Dr. Austin loved the game of golf, which he also passed on to his sons at Prairie Dunes Country Club. He served on the board for many years and was president in 1984. Dr. Austin, through his work on the green’s committee, was involved with advancing the club’s national stature.
On September 18, 1993, he married Neva Esau Goering in Hutchinson.

Dr. Austin is survived by: wife, Neva of Hutchinson; sons, Jeffrey (Lisa) of Overland Park and their children, Olivia, Bennett, and Genevieve, Joel of McKinney, Texas, and his children, Jensen, Nicklaus, and Reese, Dr. Jonathan of Hutchinson and his children, Hunter and Fischer, Jason (Catherine) of Houston, Texas; stepchildren, Dr. Mark Goering (Sheila) of Enid, Oklahoma and their son, Tyler, Dawn Hamilton (Dr. Kent Hamilton) of San Antonio, Texas and their children, Allison and Ashlyn; foster daughter, Sonja Engwall (Dwight) of Douglass; and brothers, Richard Austin (Barb) of Denver, Colorado and Ronald Austin (Claudine) of Aspen, Colorado. Also dearly remembered is his veterinary assistant of 24 years, Georgeanna Southern.

Dr. Austin was preceded in death by his parents and step-grandson, Zac Ackman.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, August 25, 2018, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1602 N. Main, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Lennie Maxwell officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Air Force. Private family burial will take place in Eden Church Cemetery, rural Moundridge. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.
