Patty Kelman | 1936 – 2018 |

 

Patty Kelman, 82, died Friday, July 27, 2018, at Prairie Sunset Home, Pretty Prairie.  She was born March 11, 1936, in Arlington, to Francis ‘Curly’ and Genevieve ‘Tiny’ (Feese) Sickmon.

Patty graduated from Arlington High School in 1954.  She was a farmer’s wife and dairy woman.  Patty enjoyed quilting, knitting, and crocheting. She was a lifelong member of Arlington United Methodist Church.

On May 31, 1954, she married her high school sweetheart, Duane Kelman, in Arlington.  They shared 64 years of marriage.

Patty is survived by:  husband, Duane of Arlington; daughter, Dena Sherow and husband Mike of Langdon; sons, Steve Kelman of Hutchinson, Jeff Kelman of Wichita; brother, Darrel Sickmon of Denver, Colorado; sister, Marjorie Rickett of Wichita; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 1, 2018, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Schar Cross officiating.  Burial will follow in Lerado Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary.  The casket will remain closed. Memorials may be made to the Arlington United Methodist Church, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS  67501.

Alvin “Al” Miller of Hutchinson | 1943 – 2018 |

Alva ‘Al’ Miller, 75, died Friday, July 27, 2018, at his home. He was born May 5, 1943, in Hutchinson, the son of Enos and Mary (Bontrager) Miller.

He was a farmer and pastor of Prairie Chapel Mennonite, Hutchinson.

On October 17, 1965, he married Dorothy Jane Nisly in Hutchinson. She survives. Al is survived by:  children, Verlin and wife Violet of Red Bluff, CA, Gina Schrock and husband Ken, Lynn and wife Sandra, all of Partridge; siblings, Vernon of Hutchinson, Daniel and wife Mary Etta of Canon City, Colorado,  Dave and wife Miriam of Plain City, Ohio, and Ruby Miller of Hutchinson; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; infant daughter, Vicki Jane; brother, Floyd; and sister-in-law, Lena Miller.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2018, at Pleasantview Activity Center, 5015 S. Dean Rd., with Delmar Troyer and Ray Shaum presiding. Burial will follow at Prairie Chapel Mennonite Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Pleasantview Activity Center. H. William “Bill” Powell | 1927 – 2018 |

H. William ‘Bill’ Powell, 90, of Hutchinson, died July 24, 2018, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson. He was born December 14, 1927, in Hutchinson, to Harold Benjamin and Ollie (Ricksecker) Powell.

Bill graduated from Reno County High School, Nickerson. He was a farmer and an airplane pilot for various local companies.

On April 17, 1948, he married Barbara Vetter in Hutchinson. She died July 20, 2001. Bill is survived by: daughters, Kay Pattinson of Wichita, Mora Zinn of Milford, Iowa, Janie Chambers of Lenexa; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, July 27, 2018, at Wesley Towers Evans Chapel, 3709 Asbury Place, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Richard G. Brooks officiating. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until service time Friday at Evans Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Wesley Towers Good Samaritan Fund, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Dixie M. Van Etten | 1936 – 2018 |

Dixie M. Van Etten, 81, of Hutchinson, died Sunday, July 22, 2018, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born August 22, 1936, in Hutchinson, to Emery R. and Esther (Young) Weiser.

Dixie graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1954. She was an Avon representative for over 30 years and worked as a certified nursing aide at Mennonite Friendship Communities. Dixie enjoyed playing the piano and accordion, and Bingo at the Delos V. Smith Senior Citizens Center. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church. Dixie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

On June 27, 1954, she married Eldon Lee Van Etten in Hutchinson. They shared 64 years of marriage. Dixie is survived by: husband, Eldon of Hutchinson; daughters, Deanna Geide (David Blackwood) of Hutchinson, Melody Bosley (Edgar) of South Hutchinson; foster daughter, Kimberly Rayton (Clarence) of Lawrence; foster son, Brian White of Missouri; son-in-law, Larry Parish of Newton; grandchildren, Stephanie Haviland, Julia Crawford, Anthony Geide, Jenny Dinsmore, Jeffrey Parish, Jessica Geide, Sarah Parish, Todd Bosley, Tyler Bosley, Kayla Rayton, James Rayton; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Donald Weiser (Cathie) of Aurora, Colorado, Philip Weiser (Patsy) of Wichita; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by: her parents; daughter, Tonya Parish; and sister, Shirley Perser.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 26, 2018, at Westside Baptist Church, 400 W. 12th, Hutchinson, with Pastor Tim Adrian officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

Memorials may be made to Westside Baptist Church (for the missions ministry) or Hospice of Reno County, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Robert C. “Bob” Samms | 1954 – 2018 |

U.S. VeteranRobert Charles ‘Bob’ Samms, of Hutchinson, died Saturday, July 21, 2018. He was born May 24, 1954, in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Loren Albert and Helen Gertrude (Martin) Samms.

He was a 1972 graduate of Fairfield High School and attended Kansas State University. Bob was a retired veteran of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Postal Service. Memberships include: a life member of V.F.W. Bob Campbell Post #1361, American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68 and U.S. Postal Union.

On April 27, 2007, he married Deanna Kay Garver in Olathe, Kansas. She survives. Also surviving are: daughter, Michelle Samms- Keim and husband Tyler of Wichita; step daughters, Heather Marie Nickels and husband Mike, Stephanie Dawn McClure and husband Josh, all of Hutchinson; brother, Thomas Samms and wife Jeane of Northfield, New Hampshire; sister, Deborah Cape and husband Joe of Hutchinson; and six grandchildren, Jerry, Isaac, Jessi, Logan, Lylah and Dean. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, George and wife Sharon.

Graveside service with Navy Honors will be 10 a.m. Thursday, July 26, 2018, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5905 West 4th Avenue, Hutchinson. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, Hutchinson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Bob Campbell Post #1361 in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

William John “Bill” “Doc” Dougherty | 1932 – 2018 |

U.S. VeteranWilliam John ‘Bill’ ‘Doc’ Dougherty, 85, died Friday, July 20, 2018, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born August 26, 1932, in Philadelphia, PA, the son of William A. and Hilda (Kalnetts) Dougherty. Bill served in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1956. A Nickerson resident since the 1960′s, he was a self-employed welder. Bill loved carving and painting.

On August 27, 1950, he married Patricia Ann ‘Pat’ Robinson in Breckenridge, TX. They shared nearly 68 years of marriage. She survives.

Other survivors include: son, William O. Dougherty, Paso Robles, CA; daughters, Pat Vandervort Ellis and husband Jerry, Chattanooga, TN, and Nancy Waechter and husband Tim, Amarillo, TX; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one great-great-grandchild on the way; sisters, Barbara Dougherty, Port Richey, FL, Florence Clark, Leesburg, FL, Geraldine Clark, Gilbert, PA, and Patty Campbell, North Carolina.

Bill was preceded in death by: his parents; sister, Hilda Wenger; and son-in-law, Bruce Vandervort.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned.
