Nickie Jean Saunders, 76, died January 18, 2019, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born March 31, 1942, in Scott City, to Raymond A. and Juanita P. (Piros) Frank. Nickie graduated from Offerle High School and Hutchinson Community College. She worked for Western & Southern Life Insurance Company and then as a Residential Trainer/Supervisor for TECH for over 20 years before retiring. Nickie was a life-time member of DDR, a unique organization devoted to the preservation of America’s great Western heritage, having served as vice-president for a few years.

In 1969, she married Sonny Saunders in Wichita. He died September 3, 2006.

Nickie is survived by: daughters, Marquita Fahrney of South Hutchinson and Kendra Wallace and husband Robert of Hutchinson; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and sister, Ann Day of Hutchinson.

She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Michael Fahrney.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 26, 2019, at Elliott Chapel. Patricia (Patty) Templer Hart, of Hutchinson, formerly of Lawrence, beloved mother, passionate educator, and treasured friend passed away in Buhler, Kansas on January 16, 2019. Patty was born on April 1, 1943, in Larned, Kansas, to Alice Lucille Robbins and W.W. Templer. She grew up in Leoti, Kansas and graduated with honors from Wichita County High School in 1961. Patty attended Kansas State University, where she was a member of the K-State cheer team and Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She graduated from K-State in 1965 with a degree in secondary education (French).

Patty married Jerry Hart in 1965. She and Jerry had three children, Derek H. Hart of Lawrence, Kansas, Heather Hart Motzny (David) of Cypress, Texas, and Dr. Geri Kay Hart (Stacey) of Hutchinson, Kansas. Patty spent many happy years taking care of her family and teaching private French lessons in her home.

Patty decided to go back to work in the mid-1970′s. Her first assignment was working as a substitute teacher in a classroom with students with disabilities. She was told that these students did not have a regular teacher, so she decided to go back to school so that she could be their teacher. After working for a few years as a special education teacher, Patty decided that she would like to have a greater impact, so she again went back to school to pursue a position as a special education administrator. At the time of her retirement, she was serving as the director of the Northeast Kansas Educational Service Center in Lecompton, Kansas.

Survivors, in addition to her children, include: brother, William Templer of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; nephew, Ryan Templer of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; and grandchildren, Remy and Roman Kulick-Hart of Hutchinson, Kansas, Madelaine and Mackenzie Motzny of Cypress, Texas and Lauren Swender of El Dorado, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents and nephew, Nathan Templer.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2019, at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vermont St., Lawrence, with the Reverend Tyler Kaufmann officiating. Private family inurnment will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may sign the book from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

Phillip D. Pate, 72, of Hutchinson, died January 16, 2019, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born February 13, 1946, in Hutchinson, to Virgil and Lucille (White) Pate.

Phillip graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1964. He was a warehouse foreman and salesman at Colladay Hardware, a division of Western Supply, retiring after 52 years of service. Phillip was a jokester and enjoyed collecting most anything, including old pencils and flashlights. On October 3, 1980, he married Kay Lancaster in Miami, Oklahoma.

Phillip is survived by: his wife of 38 years, Kay of Hutchinson; son, Steven Pate and wife Esmeralda of Manhattan; daughter, Angela Galloway and husband Aaron of Plevna; sister-in-law, Sue Pate; grandchildren, Tristan Pate, Aidan Pate, Allison Galloway, Adam Galloway and wife Ashley; nieces; and his beloved Yorkies, Sammy and Holly.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jim Pate.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, January 21, 2019, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Cindy Dubovich officiating. Kay Gloria Paulson, 81, died January 14, 2019, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Center, Wichita. She was born May 16, 1937, in Moundridge, to J.E. and Mildred D. (Weller) Steele. Kay graduated from McPherson High School, Salt City Business College and attended Kansas State University. Kay enjoyed the outdoor life, gardening, bird watching, reading, and was an avid K-State fan. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school. Kay generously gave to all Reno County charities and organizations, such as Interfaith Housing and United Way.

On February 10, 1960, she married John R. Paulson in McPherson. In 1962, John and Kay started Gravel Products Inc. After adding a concrete plant in 1986, the name was changed to Gravel & Concrete Inc. She tirelessly ran the office with a strong will, and yet made friends of everyone.

Kay is survived by: husband, John; daughter, Renee Frazier and husband Earnest of McPherson; sons, Loren Paulson and Lisa of Nickerson, Lon Paulson and wife Susan of Wilmington, North Carolina, Lyle Paulson and wife Cris of Hutchinson; granddaughters, Brandy Keane, Kayla and Cassie Paulson; grandsons, Eric Frazier and fiancée Erin Seal, Aaron Frazier and girlfriend Molly Whitwell, London, Luke, and Lincoln Paulson; great-grandsons, Trenton and Brayden Keane, Jayden Frazier; brother, Julius Steele of McPherson; sister, Lynn Nichols of Topeka; brother-in-law, Donald Lundquist of Marquette; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, sister, Pat Lundquist and great-grandson, Brydon Keane.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2019, at Elliott Chapel. Darrell Phillips, 83, formerly of Hutchinson, died January 8, 2019, at his home in Rogers, Arkansas. He was born August 3, 1935, in Hutchinson, to William and Rhoda (Wood) Phillips.

Darrell graduated from Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Junior College.

Cremation has taken place. Graveside service at Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson, will be announced at a later date by Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
