Hutchinson falls short to Salina South

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawks lost in the final quarter to the Salina South Cougars 46-42 on Tuesday night.

Hutchinson’s Jayla Bynum attempts a block Tuesday night. Bynum is a senior at Hutchinson High.

The Salthawks trailed the Cougars 27-26 with two minutes left in the third.

In the last couple of seconds, Hutchinson heaved a three-pointer to take a 32-29 lead into the fourth quarter.

With only three minutes left, the Cougars nailed another three-pointer and grabbed a 40-37 advantage.

Salina South then took the reins as Hutchinson repeatedly fouled. The Cougars scored their final six points on free throws to win 46-42.

Hutchinson faces Salina Central at the Salthawk Activity Center on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Josephine “Jo” L. Raigosa | 1933 – 2019 |

Josephine ‘Jo’ L. Raigosa, 85, of Hutchinson, died January 6, 2019, at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, Buhler. She was born June 17, 1933, in Belpre, to Dario and Maria Trujillo.

Jo graduated from Larned High School and worked at Ineeda Dry Cleaners and Hubco. She was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church.
On October 5, 1955, she married John Raigosa Jr. in Wichita Falls, Texas. He died January 3, 2007.

Jo is survived by: daughter, Candy Parker and husband, Homer; grandchildren, Kandi Talley and fiancé, Aaron Schreiber, Angel Raigosa and wife, Crystal; five great-grandchildren, Madisen Talley, Matthew Talley, Jr., Antonio, Dominic, and Lilliana Raigosa; and step-grandchildren, Desiree and Garrett Parker. She was preceded in death by her son, Jonnie Raigosa.

Parish Rosary will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2019. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday, January 10, 2019, all at St. Teresa Catholic Church, 211 E. 5th, Hutchinson, with Father Michael J. Maybrier officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary.

Memorials may be made to the Josephine L. Raigosa Memorial Fund, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501

Cheryl Lynn Chastain | 1954 – 2019 |

Cheryl Lynn Chastain, 64, of Hutchinson, died Saturday, January 5, 2019. She was born March 31, 1954, in Hays, to Richard D. and Mary Ellen (Dutton) Martin.

She was a 1972 graduate of Ellinwood High School and 1973 graduate of Salt City Business College, Hutchinson. Cheryl worked in banking as a teller and in the call center for RCB until 2013. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Arkansas City, KS, and the altar society at the church.

On October 6, 1979, she married John Wesley Chastain at Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson. John, her husband of 39 years survives. Also surviving are: daughters, Amy Chastain and Eddie Little, and Kayla Salas and husband Anthony, all of Hutchinson; sisters, Sharon Knapp of Wichita and Brenda Zimmerman of Arkansas City; brothers, Craig Martin and wife Carolyn of Oklahoma, and Curtis Martin of Winfield; grandchildren, Jordyn Mae Martin, Bentlee Ozbun and Calvin J.W. Little. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral service will be 9 a.m. Saturday, January 12, 2019, at Elliott Chapel with Father Aaron Spexarth and Reverend Dr. David Dubovich presiding. Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Crocker Cemetery, Pittsburg, Kansas with Reverend Thomas J. Stroot presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Parkinson’s Research, Michael J. Fox Foundation or Lewy Body Dementia Association in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Katherine K. Benson | 1941 – 2019 |

Katherine Kay ‘Kathy’ Benson, 77, of South Hutchinson, died January 5, 2019, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born October 13, 1941, in Wichita, the daughter of Fredrick R. and Edna R. (McConnaughy) Baker.

Kathy graduated from East High School and, along with her husband Walter, owned Financial Credit Services in Sterling for 25 years. She also volunteered for Hospice of Reno County for over 25 years.

On January 28, 1973, Kathy married Walter E. Benson in Wichita. He died October 16, 2018. She is survived by: sons, Michael Benson, Hutchinson, Fritz Benson (Becky), Colwich; grandchildren, Grant and Emery; adopted daughter, Gina Young, and her children, Emma and Levi; sister, Joyce Proctor, Carefree, AZ; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Donald and Bobby Baker.

Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice House, Hutchinson, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Merle M. Orsborn | 1929 – 2019 |

Merle M. Orsborn, 89, of Hutchinson, died January 5, 2019, at Hospice House. He was born April 16, 1929, in Wamego, the son of Lawrence and Charlotte (Brown) Orsborn.

He was a graduate of Wamego High School in 1947 and Kansas State University in 1953. While at KSU, Merle was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Merle married Jacqueline ‘Jackie’ Deck on May 31, 1953, in Hutchinson.

Merle was a longtime employee at Cessna-Eaton Corp., retiring in 1991. Following his retirement, he worked for H&R Block and as a volunteer at AARP and was a member at Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church.

He is survived by: wife, Jackie, of the home; daughter, Penny Palacio, Haven, and her fiancé, Heath Foster; four grandchildren, Chris, Jeramie, Krystal, Ashleah, and their families; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by: his parents; daughter, Debbie Kay Orsborn; two brothers and one sister.

Memorial service for Merle will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 10, 2019, at Elliott Chapel, with Rev. Richard Brooks officiating. A private family graveside will be held at Fairlawn Burial Park. Friends may sign the book 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Nadine Austin | 1926 – 2019 |

Nadine Austin, 92, of Hutchinson, died Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at Good Samaritan Society. She was born July 8, 1926, in Caddo, OK, to Isaac Mathew and Neddie Beatrice (Sherman) Cole.

She attended school in Goodlet, TX. She was a loving mother, and grandmother.

On August 29, 1943, she married Virgil Elliott Austin in Quanah, TX. He died April 4, 1998.

Survivors include: sons, Rick Austin and wife Connie of Henderson, NV; grandchildren, Sheri, Cindy with husband Mark, Misty, Chellie, John, Terry, Donald, Troy and Richard; and numerous great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; daughters, Bonnie Austin, Sharon Brink and Donna Allsup.

Cremation has taken place.  A memorial service will be held at a later date in Henderson, NV.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Donor’s Choice or St. Jude Children Research Hospital, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Loran K. Whitney | 1936 – 2019 |

U.S. Veteran

Loran Keith Whitney, 82, of Hutchinson, died Saturday, January 5, 2019, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born December 1, 1936, in Wellsville, PA, the son of Keith and Enolia (Marsh) Whitney. Loran served in the United States Air Force for 8 years.

He worked for many years as an adjuster for Trinity Universal Insurance. After retirement, Loran worked as a greeter at Walmart. He was of the Baptist faith.

On August 15, 1985, he married Marjorie J. Bock in Hutchinson. She survives. Other survivors include: sons, Tracy, Tony, and Mark Basler, all of New Mexico; several grandchildren; brother, David Whitney (Laura), New York; nephews, Hunter and Remington Whitney; stepsons, Bradley Bock (Denise), Salina, Gary Bock (Joyce), Sunnyvale, CA, Christopher Bock (Kathy A.), Savannah, GA; stepdaughter-in-law, Kathy Ramskill, Topeka; step-grandsons, Andrew Mueller, Dylan Mueller (Marissa), Matt Mueller, Skyler Bock (Shraedha); step-granddaughter, Peyton Mueller; and five great-grandchildren. Loran was preceded in death by: his parents; stepson, E.J. Bock; step-daughters, Jody and Judy Bock.

Cremation has taken place and, per Loran’s wishes, no services will be held. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday at Elliott Mortuary.

Memorial donations are suggested to Cancer Council of Reno County or Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Jesse M. Bribiesca Sr. | 1938 – 2019

Jesse M. Bribiesca Sr., 80, of Hutchinson, died Thursday, January 3, 2019, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born January 19, 1938, in Garden City, to Vicente ‘Carmen’ and Luz (Medina) Bribiesca. Jesse graduated from Garden City High School in 1956 and attended a barber school in Wichita, completing his certification in 1971.

He worked at A&L Barber and Style Shop at Northgate and was a custodian for Hutchinson Community College and First Christian Church. He was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church and had been active in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and Cursillo. He treasured his religious faith, loved the presence of family at Sunday meals, and enjoyed jazz, yardwork, watching television and reading spiritual books.

On December 20, 1962, he married Frances Rowland in Garden City. She survives.

Other survivors include: sons, Jesse Jr. and Joe Bribiesca, both of Hutchinson; daughters, Ana Rumback and husband Bill of Hutchinson, and Andrea Bribiesca of Wichita; grandchildren, Chris Rumback of St. Louis, MO, Ellie Rumback of Manhattan, KS, Molly Bribiesca of Wichita, and Katie Rumback of Hutchinson; brothers, Louie, Albert and Edward Bribiesca of California, and Vincent, Abel and Ernie Bribiesca of Garden City; sisters, Alvina Bribiesca of California and Marta Flores of New Mexico; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers, Stephen, Raymond, Charlie and Lawrence Bribiesca; and stepmother, Teresa Mendoza Bribiesca.

Cremation has taken place. Parish rosary is 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, 211 E. 5th, Hutchinson. Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, officiated by Father Michael J. Maybrier. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may sign the book from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Priests Retirement and Education Fund – Wichita Diocese or St. Teresa Catholic Church, both in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
