AUDIO: Hutchinson falls short against Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawks lost to the Topeka Trojans 45-43 in the last seconds of Friday’s game.

Hutchinson’s Damon Cantu scored an 8-yard rushing touchdown seven minutes into the game to open scoring.

With four minutes to go in the first quarter, Hutchinson’s Patrick Graebner slid in a 3-yard touchdown run to put the Salthawks up 14-0.

Hutchinson’s running back Brayden Rogers got a 15-yard rushing touchdown five minutes into the second quarter. That run put the Salthawks up 21-0.

Less than a minute later, Topeka’s D’Anthony Fulton scored the Trojans’ first touchdown of the night. The 69-yard rush made the score 21-6.

With two minutes left in the second quarter, Hutchinson’s Trevor Rhoades had a 1-yard burst to give the Salthawks a 28-6 advantage.

Topeka kicked a 32-yard field goal with under a minute left before halftime to make the score 28-9 at intermission.

Three minutes into the third quarter, Topeka’s Jacqez Barksdale rushed for a 35-yard touchdown. That cut Hutchinson’s lead to 12.

Topeka’s Fulton slipped past Hutchinson with a 6-yard touchdown run and cut the Salthawk advantage to five.

Patrick Graebner pushed Hutchinson’s lead back to 12 on a 1-yard run.

Only minutes into the fourth, Topeka cut the Hutchinson advantage to 35-30 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Jacqez Barksdale.

Three minutes later, Barksdale went for another touchdown, this time from 66-yards out. The TD and failed two-point conversion put Topeka up by one.

Topeka’s Fulton scored his third touchdown of the night with a 4-yard rush. The Trojans took a 42-35 lead.

Hutchinson pushed back with a 4-yard touchdown run from Patrick Graebner with two minutes to go. Graebner then scored the two-point conversion to give Hutchinson a 43-42 lead.

However, with one last push, Topeka kicked a 23-yard field goal to beat Hutchinson.

Celtics blank Dragons

Trinity’s Kaleb Hammeke runs for a touchdown against Belle Plaine.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Trinity Celtics clobbered the Belle Plaine Dragons in Friday night’s game 58-0.

Trinity scored on a rushing touchdown within the first three minutes.

With 7:01 left in the first quarter, the Celtics returned a punt for a touchdown to go up 14-0.

Trinity’s Nolan Clarke had a pick-six less than a minute later.

Isaac Miller found pay dirt with 4:35 left in the first quarter to push Trinity’s lead to 30-0.

In the second quarter, the Celtics scored a rushing touchdown to build a 38-point advantage.

With less than a minute left, Trinity scored again to take a 44-0 lead into the locker room.

Trinity scored 14 points in the second half.

The Celtics will play against the Garden Plain Owls in regionals on Friday, Nov. 2.

Susan B. “Susie” Belt | 1957 – 2018 |

Susan B. ‘Susie’ Belt, 61, of Hutchinson, died Thursday, October 25, 2018, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born May 4, 1957, in Newton, to Richard O. and Velma (Bafus) Wilson.

Susie graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1975. She worked as a pediatric dental assistant and at Sacks 5th Ave. restaurant. Susie loved gardening, swimming, traveling, and KU basketball. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. Susie was active in the Sky Ryders Drum & Bugle Corps.

On July 8, 1977, she married Richard Belt in Hutchinson. Susie is survived by: her husband of over 41 years, Richard of Hutchinson; daughter, Jennifer Peterman (Seth) of Goddard; sisters, Pam Emmerich, Sherry Nevius (Mike), Julie Cutting (Scott), Connie Delg (Bob); brother, Rich Wilson; grandchildren, Emmalee, Grace, Jonah, Sam, and Elliott; and mother-in-law, Evelyn Belt. She was preceded in death by: her parents; father-in-law, Raymond Belt; brother, John Wilson; and grandson, Noah.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, October 27, 2018, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Paul Thurston officiating. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice House, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Raymond E. Burnett | 1943 – 2018 |

Raymond E. Burnett, 74, of Hutchinson, died Wednesday, October 24, 2018, at his home.  He was born November 2, 1943, in Omaha, NE, to Raymond and Edna (Hughes) Burnett.

Raymond graduated from Cimarron High School.  He was a machinist at Cessna and Eaton Corporation. Raymond was a member of V.F.W. Bob Campbell Post #1361, American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68, and Loyal Order of Moose #982.  He proudly served in the Army.

On April 20, 2015, he married Judy Frederick in Hutchinson.

Survivors include: wife, Judy Frederick of Hutchinson; daughter, Tina Rosiere of Hutchinson; sons, Marvin Frasure and Eldon Heckel and Taryn, all of Hutchinson; brother, Robert ‘Bob’ Burnett and Trudy of Kinsley; multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren; one niece and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by: parents; first wife, Connie; and a brother.

Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday October 29, 2018, in Memorial Park Cemetery with Reverend Cindy Dubovich officiating.  Friends may sign the book 9:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Elliott Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Raymond Burnett Memorial Fund, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Tommy J. Wood | 1941 – 2018 |

U.S. VeteranTommy Joe Wood, 76, of Hutchinson, died Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born December 30, 1941, in Crosses, Arkansas, to Melvin and Wanda (Faubus) Wood.

Tommy served in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1968. He retired from Chance Industries in Wichita. Tommy was a member of Midian Shrine, Wichita, where he was active in the Tin Lizzies and a member of Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge #124 A.F. & A.M. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, playing golf, and riding his Harley-Davidson.

On January 8, 1982, he married Nancy Hornbeck. Tommy is survived by: wife, Nancy of Hutchinson; sisters, Donna Sue Raine and Brenda Duerksen, both of Haysville; four children; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved dogs, Sammy and Buddy. He was preceded in death by: his parents and two brothers, Bobby and Melvin Dale Wood.

Cremation has taken place. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday, October 29, 2018, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson, with Pastor Matt Stafford officiating. Masonic honors will be conducted the Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge #124 A.F. & A.M. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.

Memorials may be made to the Hutchinson Animal Shelter, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
