Sonia C. Hayes | 1949 – 2018 |

Sonia Carol Hayse, 69, died Sunday, October 28, 2018, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born October 2, 1949, in Dodge City, the daughter of Carl and Margerite (Watson) Hayse.

Her mother died three days after Sonia’s birth and she was cared for and raised by relatives and friends the first three years of her life. Sonia’s father remarried to Joan Wilson and they had four sons, Dale, Dan, Dean, and Darol. At age two, doctors discovered her hip was out of joint and she underwent several painful surgeries at Saint Francis Hospital, Wichita.

Sonia attended Greensburg schools, Pratt Community College, and received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Emporia State University. She taught school for 32 years, 24 of those as an 8th-grade science teacher in Hutchinson at Central, Sherman, Liberty, and HMS 8. After retiring from teaching, Sonia enjoyed writing short stories, two of which won first place two years in a row from the Women’s Federation of Kansas. She also became a Master Gardener through K-State Extension. In addition, Sonia served on the boards of the Hutchinson Public Library, Hutchinson Symphony, and worked as a volunteer at the Friendshop, the bookstore in the library. She belonged to First Unitarian Universalist Church, Wichita, and attended regularly.

Sonia is survived by: constant companion, Lloyd Ballhagen of Hutchinson; step-mother, Joan, of Greensburg; brothers, Dale Hayse (Monica) of Mullinville, Dan Hayse (Jane) of Bucklin, Dean Hayse (Jodi) of Independence, KS, Darol Hayse (Mary) of Hutchinson; and six nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, November 2, 2018, at Elliott Chapel. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to Friends of the Library, Hutchinson Symphony, Hutchinson Animal Shelter, and Hospice House, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Virginia ‘Ginger’ Lee Krepps | 1927 – 2018 |

Virginia Lee “Ginger” Krepps, 91, of Hutchinson, died October 27, 2018, at Good Samaritan Society- Hutchinson Village. She was born March 26, 1927, in Hutchinson, to George Sinclair Miller and Nettie Estella (Strong) Miller Trott.

Ginger was a homemaker and her family was the center of her life. She was an avid knitter and enjoyed crocheting, winning many ribbons at the Kansas State Fair for her handiwork. Ginger was a member of First Church of God, Hutchinson.

May 1945, she married John Redmond Campbell. He died May 8, 1954. On November 3, 1956, she married William K. “Bill” Krepps III in Hutchinson. He died September 8, 2017.

Ginger is survived by: children, Dana Beth Campbell VanGotten (Charles), Scott T. Campbell, both of Hutchinson, Kim Carson Campbell (Nora), Robin Delos Campbell (Cindy), of Arlington, Texas, Kevin Brian Krepps of Wichita, Cary Paige Krepps of Ellsworth, Kelly Colleen Krepps Wesley (Michael) of Hutchinson; stepsons, Barry Brenton Krepps (Cindy) of Windermere, Florida, Richard Krepps of Sunnyvale, California; 28 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Robert Leon Miller.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 5, 2018, at First Church of God, 704 N. Jefferson, with Pastor Tim Kraft officiating. Private family inurnment will take place in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. Friends may sign the book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday at Elliott Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Virginia Lee Krepps Memorial Fund, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Susie Ellen Bontrager | 1929 – 2018 |

Susie Ellen Bontrager, 89, of South Hutchinson, died October 25, 2018, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson. She was born April 26, 1929, in Yoder, the 9th of 10 children born to David K. and Mary (Bontrager) Bontrager, and was the last surviving sibling of the family.

Susie’s professional life was spent in kitchens ” both cooking and directing food service operations in public schools in South Chicago, IL, Food Services Manager at Laurelville Mennonite Church Center outside Pittsburgh, PA, and Food Services Director for Hutchinson public schools, before retiring in 1995. In addition, she volunteered for over 15 years with the Hutchinson chapter of the American Red Cross coordinating food services for their five annual blood drives, and in 2012 received the Marjorie Piper Award for her distinguished service. She also volunteered with other non-profit groups as well as her church. Susie was a long-time member of Journey@South Hutchinson Mennonite Church.

She is survived by: 26 nieces and nephews of the 36 born to her siblings; many great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephews; and untold numbers of friends and acquaintances in many parts of the United States.

Susie was preceded in death by: her parents; nine brothers and sisters, Eli (Opal) Bontrager, Lizzie (David) Hostetler, Enos (Mabel) Bontrager, Rudy (Lizzie) Bontrager, Katie (Samuel) Yoder, Clara Bontrager, Jonas (Alma) Bontrager, Mary Bontrager, and Sarah (Freeman) Eash.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 29, 2018, at Journey@Yoder Mennonite Church, 3605 E. Longview Rd., with Pastors Eric Miller and Howard Wagler officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 12 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the children’s ministry at Journey@Yoder or Mennonite Friendship Communities Endowment Fund, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Dick Currie | 1931 – 2018 |

Dick Currie, 87, of Hutchinson, died Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born May 27, 1931, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, to Charles and Lahoma (Prichard) Currie.

Dick graduated from Shawnee High School, Shawnee, Oklahoma and attended Oklahoma A & M University. He served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. Dick was owner of Architectural Millwork, Inc. for 30 years. In addition, he enjoyed raising Charolais cattle. Dick loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was also a mentor to many individuals in the community. Dick was a member of American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68 and past-president of Architectural Woodwork Institute, of which he was instrumental in creating the quality standards of millworking that are still employed today.

On May 24, 1975, he married Connie B. Miller in Hutchinson. They shared over 43 years of marriage.

Dick is survived by: wife, Connie of Hutchinson; daughter, Leigh Currie-Nerren and husband Randy of Lindale, Texas; Godson, Brandon Ewing of Surprise, Arizona; brothers, Tom Currie and wife Pat, Harry Currie and wife Joan, all of Edmond, Oklahoma; brother-in-law, Frank Miller and wife Debbie of Stillwater, Oklahoma; and sister-in-law, Judy Poovey and husband John of Loveland, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; son, Sam Currie; son-in-law, Mike Miller; and his beloved kitty, Salem Matthew.

Cremation has taken place and per Dick’s wishes, there will be no service. Friends may sign the book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday through Saturday at Elliott Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Reno County or American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501. Dragons sweep Indy in regular-season finale

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team clinched the third seed for the upcoming Region VI Tournament on Wednesday night with a sweep of the Independence Pirates at the Sports Arena.

Freshman Eden Hiebert had 11 kills and the Blue Dragons limited the Pirates to .000 hitting, while sophomore libero Raychel Reed moved up another run on the Hutch career digs ladder after a 25-18, 26-24, 25-13 victory over the Pirates to complete the season-series sweep of Independence.

Hutchinson must wait for an opponent, but the Blue Dragon do know they will play at home in the opening round of the Region VI Tournament at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at the Sports Arena. Official pairings will be released on Monday.

Hiebert hit .241 on 29 swings to get her match-high 11 digs against Independence. She led a Blue Dragon offensive attack that hit .198 for the match and the third-straight match and fifth time in the last six matches the Dragons have hit less than .200.

Reed posted a match-high 10 digs on Wednesday and moved past McKenzie Steele (2014-15) into third place on the Blue Dragon career digs list with 1,061. Reed had two of Hutch’s six service aces.

Hutch had only 32 kills to Indy’s 29 and had six aces to the Pirates four. Independence out-dug the Dragons 45-42, but the Blue Dragons had a 10-3 advantage in team blocks. Freshman Tara Davis had six block assists and sophomore Cassidy Crites added four block assists. Sophomore Lexi Hogan had one solo and two block assists.

Sophomore Elena Takova had eight kills on .227 hitting for the Blue Dragons. Delilah Vigil was next with four kills.

Crites finished with 12 assists and eight digs. Sophomore Payton Gawith had eight assists and Eboni Sapien had seven assists and six digs. Baylee Beck added eight digs.

Independence hit .000 with 29 kills and 29 attack errors in 111 attacks. Destiny Thomas had eight kills to lead the Pirates.

Set 1: Neither team executed well in the opening set with Hutch hitting .086 and the Pirates .000. Tied at 3-all, Takova’s kill started a 9-2 run that was capped by a kill by Gawith, whose dig traveled and landed on Indy’s side of the net for a 12-5 lead. A Hiebert kill made it 15-8. The next three Dragon points were scored on Indy errors and then a double block by Hiebert and Davis gave the Blue Dragons a 19-11 lead. A Vigil kill gave Hutch a 24-15 lead and then Indy scored three straight before another Vigil kill ended the first season with a 25-18 Hutch win.

Set 2: Indy scored the first three points, but Hutch countered with four in a row and led 4-3 after a Reed ace. That lead grew to 10-5 on a Hiebert kill and 15-7 on another Hiebert termination. Indy then went on a 8-1 run to pull within 16-15 after a Thomas kill. The Pirates continued to charge and led 20-19 after a Shelymar Diaz kill. Hutch countered with a Hiebert kill, a Davis service ace and a Pirate attack error to lead 22-20. But the Pirates tie the set at 22, 23 and 24 before a Vigil kill and a double block by Davis and Hogan closed out the set for the Dragons. Hutch hit .250 in the set while Indy had its best offensive set of the match at .162.

Set 3: Leading 5-3, the Blue Dragons used an 8-1 run to create some early distance. Hiebert had two kills in the set and Hutch led 13-4. A Reed ace gave Hutch an 18-10 lead to halt a small 6-3 Indy run. A Takova kill made it 19-11. A Hiebert kill made it 21-12. Hutch then scored the final four points on a Pirate attack error, a Vigil/Crites double block, Hiebert kill and another Indy attack error finish off

Tough start dooms Dragons in Region VI

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Johnson County scored two goals in the first 15 minutes and the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team didn’t have another comeback in it on Thursday.

The Blue Dragons saw their season come to an end with a 3-1 loss to Johnson County in the opening round of the Region VI Women’s Soccer Tournament.

Hutchinson’s final record in 2018 is 13-3-1, but the Blue Dragons bow out of the postseason in the first round for the second-straight season.

In cool and wet conditions at the Scheels Overland Park Soccer Complex, the 13-6-2 Cavaliers struck twice in the first 15 minutes to put the Blue Dragons in a deep hold early.

The Blue Dragons only offense came on a Brailey Moeder penalty kick in the 24th minute to cut the Cavalier lead to 2-1. It was Moeder’s third penalty kick of the season, and her 32nd career goal.

Until late in the game, the Blue Dragons were unable to create a lot of offense. Johnson County out-shot Hutchinson 12-5 in shots on goal.

Taylor Camp tied a career high with nine saves for Hutchinson.

Hutchinson women win Jayhawk West Title; 3rd in Region VI

WINFIELD, Kan. — The 2018 Hutchinson Community College women’s cross country team did something on Saturday even the 2001 national champion Blue Dragon didn’t accomplish – win a Jayhawk West championship.

The 2018 Blue Dragons won the Jayhawk West team championship on Saturday during the 2018 Region VI Cross Country championships at the old Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield. The Blue Dragons finished third for the second-straight season in the Region VI team standings.

Within the framework of the Region VI results, they Jayhawk West and Jayhawk West teams are separated to crown team champions for the conference.

No. 7-ranked Hutchinson easily won the Jayhawk West title with 33 team points. Conference runner-up Colby had 69 points. The 2001 NJCAA champion Blue Dragons were second in the Jayhawk West in 2001.

Cowley College won the Region VI team championship. Allen was second with 75 points and Hutchinson was third with 105 points. This was Hutch’s 15th top-three finish in team history.

The Blue Dragons had three All-Region runners in Gabby Collins and Sarah Patteson. Those two along with America Garcia and Lisayo Ewoi earned All-Jayhawk West honors.

Collins, a freshman, had her best day as a Blue Dragon by posting the third best 5,000-meter time in school history with a mark of 19 minutes, 6.56 seconds. That time also the second fastest Region VI time in Blue Dragon women’s history. Collins finished eighth in the Region VI individual standings and third in the Jayhawk West standings.

Patteson, a sophomore, also posted her best 5K time as a Blue Dragon at 19:40.43, which was 10th in the region and fifth in the conference. Patteson tied Mary Blanchard (1985) for the seventh-fastest time by a Blue Dragon in Region VI history and tied for 20th on the all-time Hutchinson list.

Garcia earned All-Jayhawk West honors with a sixth-place time of 20:02.44. She finished 17th in the region. Ewoi battled through an injury to finish seventh in the league and 19th in the region with a time of 20:07.07.

One other Blue Dragon posted a personal best time on Saturday. Sophomore Carissa Youngs ran a Blue Dragon-best time of 21:30.92 to finish 25th in the conference and 50th in the region.

Other Blue Dragon performances on Saturday were:
+ Aileen Gomez, 20:19.57 (26th in region; 12th in conference).
+ Saw Ahmara, 20:57.85 (42nd in region; 21st in conference).
+ Macy Linenberger, 21:14.77 (46th region; 24th in conference).

The Blue Dragons will have two weeks to prepare for the NJCAA National championships on November 10 in Garden City.

Record day for Blue Dragons at Region VI Championships

WINFIELD, Kan. — The 2018 season has been historical for the Hutchinson Community College men’s cross country team. On Saturday at the 2018 Region VI Championships, the Blue Dragons blew up the record books.

The No. 7-nationally ranked Blue Dragons won its first Region VI team championship since 1996 and freshman Andrew Kibet tied a school record in becoming Hutchinson’s first Region VI individual champion in 38 years.

Justin Riggs, Hutchinson’s fourth-year head coach was named the Region VI Coach of the Year.

With the Region VI title, the seventh in team history, the Blue Dragons also won the 2018 Jayhawk West championship. This was Hutchinson’s fourth team championship of the season.

The Blue Dragons edged Colby, 48-52 in the Region VI team standings and 36-38 in the Jayhawk West standings. Colby is the only team to defeat Hutchinson this season. This was Hutchinson’s first conference championship since 2004.

Kibet continued his impressive freshman season by becoming only the second Blue Dragon to win a Region VI individual championship, the first since Doug Proett in 1982.

Kibet ran his fastest 8,000-meter time as a Blue Dragon by tying a 42-year record owned by David Zuk (1976). Kibet’s record-tying time was 24 minutes, 1.80 seconds. That time is the fastest by a Blue Dragon in a Region VI championship.

Freshman Sylvestre Kibarer posted the 10th-best 8K time in team history with a fifth-place time of 25:07.75, which was fifth in both the region and conference. That earned Kibarer both all-Region VI and all-Jayhawk West honors. Kibarer posted the fifth-best time by a Hutchinson runner in the Region VI championships.

Freshman Brett Hillabrand posted the 20th-best time in Blue Dragon history at 25:35.42 in placing eighth in the region and seventh in the conference. Hillabrand also earned all-region and all-conference honors.

Sophomore Jared Stark earned all-region honors with 14th-place region time of 26:02.34. Stark played 10th in the Jayhawk West standings.

Other Blue Dragon performances on Saturday were:
+ Gavin Alexander, a personal-best time of 26:47.77 (21st in the region; 14th in the conference).
+ Connor Kaufmann, 27:09.14 (34th region; 20th conference).
+ Tony Ibarra, 27:13.15 (39th region; 23rd conference).
