Backed by the power of two dominant victories to open the season, the Hutchinson Community College football team has jumped to No. 3 in the first regular-season NJCAA Football Poll of the season, which was released on Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons (2-0, 1-0 Jayhawk Conference) receive one first-place in this week’s poll.

Hutchinson has defeated Kilgore 60-29 and then-No. 23 Independence 70-0 in its first two games of the season. HCC jumped three spots from its preseason ranking of No. 6.

Two members of the NJCAA preseason Top 5 have lost in the first two weeks of the season. No. 3 Butler dropped an overtime decision to No. 1 Navarro on Aug. 25. No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast dropped a 34-30 decision to East Mississippi this past weekend.

Navarro College retains the No. 1 spot in the first regular-season poll. Blinn College jumps to No. 2, followed by the Blue Dragons. Butler and Arizona Western round out of the Top Five.

Coffeyville (1-1) is the only other Jayhawk Conference team to be ranked this week, coming in at No. 17.

The Blue Dragons have now been ranked in 19 consecutive and 27 of the last 29 NJCAA football polls, the longest run as a ranked team since the mid-1990s, when it spent time in 29 consecutive polls.

The Blue Dragons have also been ranked in the Top 11 for 13 consecutive NJCAA polls.

Hutchinson will have a short week of preparation. The Blue Dragons play at Air Force Prep at 2 p.m. (CT) on Friday afternoon at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
