Hutchinson Community College receiver Cordarrelle Patterson and safety Duane Sims earned Verizon Wireless/Jayhawk Conference Football Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week nods after the 11th-ranked Blue Dragons defeated Fort Scott 69-36 last Saturday at Fort Scott.

Patterson, a 6-foot-4 sophomore from Rock Hill, S.C., had a huge game against Fort Scott, making plays as a receiver and a runner.

Patterson topped the 250 all-purpose yard mark for the second time this season, amassing 255 and he scored a career-high four touchdowns. As a receiver, he caught four balls for 83 yards and two touchdowns, including a key 14-yard TD grab midway through the third quarter when it was a one-possession game. He had two rushes and totaled 107 yards with both running plays going for touchdowns of 65 and 42 yards. Patterson also had two kickoff returns for an average of 33.5 yards per return. Patterson now ranks No. 2 in career receiving yards, career receptions, career scoring and career touchdowns.

Sims, a 5-8 sophomore from Wichita, had a career game against the Greyhounds. He had a career-high 16 tackles, including 13 solo stops. Sims also had career highs with three tackles for loss totaling 22 yards and two quarterback sacks totaling 17 yards.

It’s the first time Sims has been named the conference player of the week.

It’s the second time this season that Patterson has earned a weekly conference award. It’s the fourth time in his career, but his first as an offensive player. Patterson’s other conference weekly awards came on special teams.

Patterson and Sims are the seventh and eighth Blue Dragons to earn Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week honors in 2011.

For the second-straight year, Verizon Wireless is the title sponsor of the Jayhawk Conference Football Players of the Week. Alford is now eligible for NJCAA national player of the week honors. Those winners will be announced later this week.
