WICHITA (AP) – Boeing Co. says it’s studying the future of its defense plant in Wichita, including a possible closing.

In a statement Monday, a Boeing spokesman says the study is part of an initiative to address what he calls “the current defense budget environment.” The statement says the plant’s product and service contracts have expired and there are limited prospects for future work.

The statement also says the options being reviewed include “the potential closure of the Wichita site.”

Gov. Sam Brownback and the Kansas congressional delegation responded that Boeing had promised that winning a U.S. Air Force tanker contract would mean 7,500 jobs for Kansas. The officials said they expect Boeing to “honor that commitment.”

The Wichita facility has 2,100 employees. Boeing spun off its commercial aircraft operation there several years ago.
