WICHITA, Kan. – The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the discharge of a firearm by a deputy during a pursuit.

Shortly after midnight Thursday morning, deputies attempted to stop a gold Pontiac Grand Am for traffic violations near Harry and Seneca. The driver refused to stop and a pursuit ensued on residential streets in the area.

After the driver stopped near Baldwin and Palisade, deputies were trying to talk him out of the vehicle. The driver allegedly drove his vehicle at the deputies and one shot was discharged at the vehicle by one deputy.

The pursuit continued and the driver jumped from the vehicle near Zimmerly and Water. Deputies chased the driver on foot and took him in to custody.

Subsequently, 24-year-old Anthony R. Edwards of Wichita was booked in to jail on two counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, two counts of criminal damage to property, felony flee and elude, and possession of narcotics.

The case will be forwarded to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.
