Buhler High School will have its first Citizenship Day on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 12. From 12:30 to 2:45 p.m., all Buhler High School students will be involved in community service projects in some way, either working at BHS, Buhler Grade School, Wheatland Park, or downtown Buhler.

Buhler High School Social Studies Teacher Willie Adkins said Citizenship Day is designed for multiple reasons.

“One is to give back to the community and recognize the relationship we all share with each other,” he said. “In each person’s small way, the bigger picture can be achieved. A school, and its functions, work best when there is cooperation between the principle characters; the parents, the kids, the teachers and the community. We hope to emphasize that relationship with the afternoon clean up and work session.”

Multiple service projects will be taking place simultaneously. At the BHS football field, students will paint sheds, rake around and under tree rows, pull weeds and do overall general cleaning. At the tennis courts, they’ll work on beautification and landscaping, as well as haul off backfill dirt. Inside BHS, students will wash windows, paint upstairs bathrooms, and clean out storage rooms – just to name a few projects. Work to the outside of the building will include raking, planting, weeding, cleaning gutters, prep work for future concrete, and general cleanup. Students will also be doing some paint scraping and re-painting walls and parking stoppers.

At Wheatland Park, students will paint the boys’ bathroom walls, weed, paint the interior of the south dugouts and install helmet/bat holes. They’ll also clean in and around the pond and park areas.

In downtown Buhler, students will clean windows and sidewalks and paint a new restaurant in town. Students will spend time at Sunshine Meadows visiting with residents and playing games. They’ll also help the Kiwanis Club clean ditches.

Buhler High School’s Citizenship Day is the product of the school’s Relationship Professional Development group and is designed to promote the pillars of CharacterCounts! as they highlight civic duty. The City of Buhler and many of its employees will also be joining in and helping in designated areas.
