HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Commission had an extensive discussion Wednesday over its goals for the year. Toward the top of the list: overtime reduction within the Reno County Sheriff’s Office.

Commissioner Dan Deming is concerned with overtime pay, while Commission Chair Ron Hirst says the commission sets the budget and the sheriff manages it. Commissioner Bob Bush suggested they just budget so much money each year as a line item.

This will be discussed further during summer budget hearings.

A few other items were discussed, including the possibility of forming a task force. This group could solve logistical problems and suggest ideas. For example, commissioners think this brainstorming group could figure out what to do with the empty space on the main floor of the courthouse. Commissioner Deming wants the task force filled with people from within the county organization.

At one time, there was talk about moving some of the personnel from the Health Department to the open space, but it’s unknown if that is still the case. Deming wants to have the task force in place by month’s end.

Some of the other items that could come during budget hearings this summer include: District Attorney Keith Schroeder’s request for two new attorneys; the addition of another officer to the Drug Enforcement Unit; an increased budget for the Reno County Extension Office; and the use of economic dollars to help small businesses in the county.

Also up for possible work is a discussion of EMS Service in the county. Commissioner Bush wants to talk with Terry David about the service provided, including resources and locations of where the EMS units are stationed.
