HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On a 2-1 vote Tuesday, the Reno County Commission approved a request from the Vitality Team of Reno County to widen the 43rd Avenue bridge just east of old K-61.

Commissioners are making the request as part of the design phase and want a 5-foot paved shoulder on both sides of the bridge. This would improve safety for bicyclists and pedestrians using the bridge.

Commission Chair Ron Hirst does not like the idea of spending an additional $100,000 for this item. He says that money would be better spent on the repair of other bridges in the county.

Commissioner Bob Bush, who represents the area where the bridge is located, suggested the commission approve the design plans now. He said any incoming bids could be lower than expected, thus offsetting any additional cost.

He also talked of negotiations with Westar Energy to use some of property for bicyclists.

 

Commissioner Hirst suggested the Vitality Team could add some dollars. Updegraff said the team did receive a $250,000 contribution for the bike trails from an anonymous donor.

Commissioners approved the design concept to add an additional foot on each side of the bridge. They will decide whether to proceed once bids are received.
