HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Commission Tuesday approved a new policy and procedure for the issuance of industrial revenue bonds.

Although the county rarely has to issue such bonds for economic development, commissioners wanted to loosen the strings attached — at least a little bit — for businesses wanting these bonds. In many cases, bonds issued merely for company expansion often meant the property could come off the tax roll.

The new policy wouldn’t require the company to create the previous minimum of 10 jobs to get the bond.

The commission also granted a request from Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson to purchase two vehicles at a total cost of $39,000. Commissioner Bob Bush did, however, tell Undersheriff Shawn McHaley that — in the future — he wanted to see the supporting documentation for items sold and purchased by the sheriff’s office.

The vehicles are for the detective and civil process divisions within the sheriff’s office. There was even some talk of trying to get three vehicles for the price of two. It is unknown whether that will actually come to fruition.
