Cosmosphere offers free admission on Sept. 24 for Smithsonian Magazine’s Seventh Annual Museum Day

On Saturday, September 24, the Kansas Cosmosphere & Space Center will participate in the seventh annual Museum Day from 9 a-m – 7 p-m.

The Cosmosphere will join participating museums and cultural institutions nationwide to open its Hall of Space Museum free of charge to all visitors who download the Museum Day Ticket from Smithsonian.com.

Museum Day is a celebration of the dissemination of knowledge, without a price tag, emulating the free admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, D.C.-based facilities.

With support from CITGO, Museum Day 2011 is poised to be the largest to date, outdoing last year’s record-breaking event. In 2010, museum goers downloaded 227,747 tickets resulting in more than 500,000 museum-goers visiting over 1,300 venues in all 50 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.

Included in the Cosmosphere’s free, interactive Investigate Space: The Astronaut Experience Gallery, flight simulator consoles allowing visitors to fly around the International Space Station, equipment from the space shuttle, including a toilet mock-up, Russian and U.S. Spacesuits and engine and trainer from, “Spaceship One,” the X-Prize winning private spacecraft.

Included in the Cosmosphere’s Hall of Space Museum collection, the Apollo 13 Command Module Odyssey, Liberty Bell 7 Mercury spacecraft, SR-71 Blackbird spy plane, flown spacecraft and models of U.S. and Russian spacecraft and the actual 4-billion-year-old Moon rock from Apollo 11.

Also showing on the Cosmosphere’s giant IMAX® Dome are three spectacular films at regular ticket prices, “Tornado Alley, Rescue, Lewis & Clark and Great Journey West.”

The Museum Day Ticket is available to download at www.smithsonian.com/museumday. A list of participating museums is available at https://www.smithsonianmag.com/museumday/venues/.

Visitors who present the official pass will gain free admission for two people to participating museums and cultural venues. One ticket is permitted per household, per email address.
