HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It was launched more than 11 years ago, now the New Horizons spacecraft is passing its targeted destination — Pluto.

The Cosmosphere will celebrate this event on Wednesday, Feb. 14, with members from the New Horizons mission team. The spacecraft blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida Jan. 19, 2006, and is just now reaching the end of our solar system.

The event will offer a presentation and include stories from the mission’s scientists and stunning images from the spacecraft’s flight through the Pluto system. Since the event is on Valentine’s Day, researchers will explain just how the spectacular giant heart on Pluto was formed and why they think the dwarf planet is still geologically active, despite being so far from the sun.

This event starts at 7 p.m and is free to the public.
