HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council approved the new R-6 zoning ordinance that will allow for more condensed development in the older parts of the city during Tuesday’s agenda session.

Amy Allison with the planning department says a lot of work has gone into the change that has spurred a lot of questions. The one addressed the most is what rezoning will do to property taxes.

Jade Piros de Carvalho says the change, which encompasses most of the city south of 17th Avenue, was long-needed for development:

 

The new zoning change will allow the construction of a small apartment on property, such as a garage apartment.

The change includes smaller setbacks. It changes the number of parking spaces a property must have from two to one. The new residential zone covers an area of the city from 17th south, then east and west from K-61 to Cow Creek.
