GARDEN CITY – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team scored 15 of the match’s first 16
points and then had to survive a near collapse in the second set, but ultimately finished off a Jayhawk West sweep of Garden City on Monday night at the Perryman Athletic Complex.
Hutchinson defeated Garden City 25-8, 27-25, 25-14 to improve to 17-11 overall and kept pace with first-place Colby at 7-2 in the Jayhawk West. The Trojans are 8-1 in conference play.
The Blue Dragons had their best start to a match this season in building g a15-1 lead in the opening set. After cruising in the first, HCC trailed 8-6 in the second set and then after building a 24-19 lead, Garden City scored five –straight points to knot the set at 24 and fought off six set points before the Blue Dragons finished off the set 27-25.
Freshman Nadine Cruz led the Blue Dragons with 12 kills on 26 swings and .385 hitting.
Freshman Page Hiebert had her fifth double-double of the season with 12 kills on .385 hitting and 11 digs.
Blue Dragon middles Hinalei Fihaki and Patricia Joseph had a combined 17 kills and only one error. Fihaki had nine kills on .615 hitting with three blocks. Joseph had eight kills on nine swings – a .889 attack percentage – with two blocks.
Freshman setter Katie Jorn had 29 assist and two kills. Nicole Rutherford had 10 assists. Freshman Kelsey Mulligan had 19 digs and four aces serves. Sophomore Mine Cetinoz had 18 digs.
