HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutch High’s long layoff because of rain cancellations last week in Great Bend was just what the doctor ordered as the Salthawks’ bats came alive. Ryan Cherry was spectacular on the mound in the Hutchinson 12-2 win over Wichita South High School (1-20) at Hobart-Detter Field late Monday afternoon. The Salthawks now take on Lawrence Free State in Lawrence on Thursday, May 16, at 2 p.m.
Hutchinson (6-13) jumped on South early in the 1st with a Korey Holmberg triple, who scored the first run on a Jackson Wells’ double. Wells had 3 RBI on the day. Hutchinson went on to hammer out 15 hits and score in every frame to run-rule the Titans in 5 innings.
Ryan Cherry was fantastic on the mound to get the win. He struck out seven in 3 innings while only giving up two hits, including a two-run blast to left by South catcher Santon Limon in the 3rd. Bennett Turner came on in relief and shut down the Titans on three pitches for three outs in the top of the 5th.
Cherry and Carter Booe also had solid games hitting. Cherry hit a triple and a single. Booe had three singles and two RBI. Garrett Davis and Kadan Pennington each stroked a double.
