The Hutchinson Community College football team earned their 11th and 12th Verizon Wireless/Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week award after the 15th-ranked Blue Dragons’ 42-17 victory over Coffeyville on Saturday night.
Freshman linebacker Tim Edmond was named the conference’s defensive player of the week while freshman Jatavious Stewart earned special teams player of the week.
Edmond, a 6-foot, 236-pound linebacker from Cincinnati, had a huge game in HCC’s win over Coffeyville. Edmond had a career-high 13 tackles and had an interception to thwart a Red Raven scoring opportunity. Edmond had 12 solo tackles and returned his interception 22 yards.
Edmond is the third Blue Dragon to win defensive weekly honors
Stewart, a 5-11, 179-pound receiver/punt returner from Rock Hill, S.C., had a tremendous all-around game in HCC’s victory over Coffeyville. He had 223 all-purpose yards with a receiving touchdown, but the biggest play for Stewart was a 66-yard punt return for a touchdown that helped the Blue Dragons tie the game at 14-14 in the third quarter.
Stewart is the third Blue Dragon to earn weekly conference honors on special teams.
Verizon Wireless is in its second year of sponsoring the Jayhawk Conference Players of the Week. Both Edmond and Stewart are eligible for national honors.
