HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Several events in Hutchinson will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday. The Reno County Communities that Care Youth Leadership Group is inviting all fifth through eighth graders in the county to the annual Youth Empowerment Summit from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Jan. 21 at Hutchinson High School.

The 2019 theme is Disney: “If you can dream it, you can do it.” Featured speaker will be Miss Kansas.

A special service honoring King will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Second Missionary Baptist Church. That will be followed by a program at 3 p.m. at the Stringer Fine Arts Center. The speaker will be the Rev. Terrell Davis of New Hope MBC in Wichita.

At 4:30 p.m., the Cosmosphere will once again host a community reception in honor of MLK Jr. Day. Attendees will enjoy performances from local musicians and dancers, and hear from special guest speaker Dr. Andrew Williams.

Dr. Williams is the Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Charles E. and Mary Jane Spahr Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science for the School of Engineering at the University of Kansas.
